The planned monetary policy tightening is aimed at entrenching gradual disinflation. Executive Directors recommend further enhancing the degree of exchange rate flexibility, and the fiscal deficit reduction envisaged in the draft budget is welcomed. Implementation of the structural reform agenda needs to be reinvigorated. Although the medium-term outlook remains strong, short-term risks to the program are foreseen. There is progress in areas including health, higher education enrollment, and revenue collection, but challenges in poverty reduction remain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tanzania's Second National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (NSGRP II) is a continuation of government and national commitments to accelerate economic growth and fight poverty. Though MKUKUTA I (NSGRP I) yielded demonstrable positive results, it failed to meet some targets. MKUKUTA II was therefore implemented for realizing Tanzania’s Development Vision 2025 and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). MKUKUTA II is oriented more toward growth and enhancement of productivity, with greater alignment of the interventions toward wealth creation as a way out of poverty.
Book Synopsis The impact of UK overseas aid on environmental protection and climate change adaptation and mitigation by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Environmental Audit Committee
Download or read book The impact of UK overseas aid on environmental protection and climate change adaptation and mitigation written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Environmental Audit Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-06-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Environmental Audit Committee states that the UK should only provide funding for multilateral institutions with strong environmental credentials. The current scale of the World Bank's lending to fossil fuel powered energy generation is unacceptable and the Committee urges the Government to be prepared to vote against new World Bank funding for high emissions coal-fired power stations. The profile of climate change has increased hugely but there is far less awareness of the importance of protecting biodiversity and ecosystems. The Committee believes that the Department for International Development (DFID) needs to publish a clear strategy on its approach to environmental issues to ensure that it gives them sufficient priority in its programmes and expenditure. Every effort must be made to help emerging economies leap-frog fossil fuels and fuel their growth with clean energy instead. High levels of consumption in the UK increases demand on production in poor countries which leads to degradation of their natural resources. The report calls on the UK Government to ensure that economic activity in Britain does not cancel out, or even reverse, the positive impact that UK aid is having overseas.

Book Synopsis Translating Growth into Poverty Reduction by : Flora Lucas Kessy
Download or read book Translating Growth into Poverty Reduction written by Flora Lucas Kessy and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tanzania is a politically stable, much aided country that has consistently grown economically during the first decade of the millennium, while also improving its human development indicators. However, poverty has remained persistent, particularly within rural areas. This collaborative work delves into the reasons why this is so and what can be done to improve the record. The book is the product of both Tanzanian and international poverty experts, based on largely qualitative research undertaken within Tanzania by the Chronic Poverty Research Centre (CPRC). The authors highlight and discuss the importance of macro- and micro-level causes of the persistence of poverty. The latter, on which the book is focused, centre around a negative dynamic affecting a large number of poor households in which widespread failure to provide household food security undermines gender relationships and reduces the possibility of saving and asset accumulation which is necessary for escaping poverty. This results in very low upward mobility. Vulnerability is widespread and resilience against shocks minimal, even for those who are not absolutely poor. Through an in-depth and broad analysis of poverty in Tanzania, the book provides alternative conclusions to those often repeated in the poverty discourse in international and local arenas. The conclusions were reached with the specific aim of informing political and policy debates within Tanzania.

Book Synopsis Climate Change and Multi-Dimensional Sustainability in African Agriculture by : Rattan Lal
Download or read book Climate Change and Multi-Dimensional Sustainability in African Agriculture written by Rattan Lal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 35-chapter book is based on several oral and poster presentations including both invited and contributory chapters. The book is thematically based on four pillars of sustainability, with focus on sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): Environment, Economic, Social and Institutional. The environmental sustainability, which determines economic and social/institutional sustainability, refers to the rate of use of natural resources (soil, water, landscape, vegetation) which can be continued indefinitely without degrading their quality, productivity and ecosystem services for different ecoregions of SSA. This book will help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the U.N. in SSA. Therefore, the book is of interest to agriculturalists, economists, social scientists, policy makers, extension agents, and development/bilateral organizations. Basic principles explained in the book can be pertinent to all development organizations.
Book Synopsis Collaborative Governance of Tropical Landscapes by : Carol J Pierce Colfer
Download or read book Collaborative Governance of Tropical Landscapes written by Carol J Pierce Colfer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a novel approach to governance relating to biodiversity and human well-being in complex tropical landscapes, including forests and protected areas. It focuses attention at the interface between communities and the landscape level, building on interdisciplinary research conducted in five countries (Cameroon, Indonesia, Laos, Madagascar and Tanzania). In each country, the research was set within the framework of a major national policy thrust. The book improves our understanding of and ability to manage complex landscapes---mosaics of differing land uses---in a more adaptive and collaborative way that benefits both the environment and local communities. It includes both single country and cross-site analyses, and focuses on themes, such as resettlement, land use planning, non-timber forest product use and management, the disconnect between customary and formal legal systems, and the role of larger scale policies in local level realities. Chapters also analyze experience with monitoring and a local governance assessment tool. The work also provides guidance for those interested in management and governance at lower and intermediate levels (village, district), scales likely to grow in importance in the global effort to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
