Book excerpt: Most of the problems posed by Physics to Mathematical Analysis are boundary value problems for partial differential equations and systems. Among them, the problems concerning linear evolution equations have an outstanding position in the study of the physical world, namely in fluid dynamics, elastodynamics, electromagnetism, plasma physics and so on. This Institute was devoted to these problems. It developed essentially the new methods inspired by Functional Analysis and specially by the theories of Hilbert spaces, distributions and ultradistributions. The lectures brought a detailed exposition of the novelties in this field by world known specialists. We held the Institute at the Sart Tilman Campus of the University of Liege from September 6 to 17, 1976. It was attended by 99 participants, 79 from NATO Countries [Belgium (30), Canada (2), Denmark (I), France (15), West Germany (9), Italy (5), Turkey (3), USA (14)] and 20 from non NATO Countries [Algeria (2), Australia (3), Austria (I), Finland (1), Iran (3), Ireland (I), Japan (6), Poland (1), Sweden (I), Zair (1)]. Book excerpt: Since the appearance of computers, numerical methods for discontinuous solutions of quasi-linear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations have been among the most important research subjects in numerical analysis. The authors have developed a new difference method (named the singularity-separating method) for quasi-linear hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations. Its most important feature is that it possesses a high accuracy even for problems with singularities such as schocks, contact discontinuities, rarefaction waves and detonations. Besides the thorough description of the method itself, its mathematical foundation (stability-convergence theory of difference schemes for initial-boundary-value hyperbolic problems) and its application to supersonic flow around bodies are discussed. Further, the method of lines and its application to blunt body problems and conical flow problems are described in detail. This book should soon be an important working basis for both graduate students and researchers in the field of partial differential equations as well as in mathematical physics.

Book excerpt: "This paper discusses a class of compact second order accurate finite difference equations for mixed initial-boundary value problems for hyperbolic and convective-diffusion equations. Convergence is proved by means of an energy argument and both types of equations are solved by similar algorithms. For hyperbolic equations an extension of the Lax-Wendroff method is described which incorporates dissipative boundary conditions. Upwind-downwind differencing techniques arise as the formal hyperbolic limit of the convective-diffusion equation. Finally, a finite difference 'chain-rule' transforms the schemes from rectangular to quadrilateral subdomains" -- abstract.

Book excerpt: Boundary value problems are of central importance and interest not only to mathematicians but also to physicists and engineers who need to solve differential equations which govern the behaviour of physical systems. In this book, Professor Sakamoto introduces the general theory of the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the wave equation. The reader is assumed to have some familiarity with Lebesgue integration and complex function theory but other than that the book is essentially self-contained. It is therefore suited to senior undergraduates and graduates in mathematics and the mathematical sciences but can be read with profit by professionals in those subjects.

Book excerpt: The success of the 1967 Battelle Rencontres was so much appre ciated by the participants and organizers of this experimental set-up that it was soon decided to go on with the experiment. Mathematicians and physicists had found a very suitable frame to overcome their natural shyness, to get occasionally interested into each others' work, to talk 1968 Rencontres have about it, and eventually to know each other. The been organized with the same idea in mind, and even somewhat enlarged in the following sense: the topic chosen - hyperbolic equations and waves - has proved a cornerstone of physics for more than a century and extends over most fields of contemporary physics. It follows immediately that the wide range of physicists concerned could not be represented by more than a couple of specialists in any single field. Thus, aside from bridging the gap between mathematicians and physicists, the 1968 Recontres provided a rather unique occasion to plug many intra disciplinary gaps among physicists. This made the Rencontres quite unpredictable as to how people would - and could - interact, and created a very stimulating environ ment for an unprecedented intellectual venture. From the outside, it may very well look like a hodge-podge of quite unrelated ideas. But it was much less so at the level of day-to-day discussions and informal gatherings where all slowly acquired a comprehensive synthetic view of the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel approach to analysing initial-boundary value problems for integrable partial differential equations (PDEs) in two dimensions, based on ideas of the inverse scattering transform that the author introduced in 1997. This method is unique in also yielding novel integral representations for linear PDEs. Several new developments are addressed in the book, including a new transform method for linear evolution equations on the half-line and on the finite interval; analytical inversion of certain integrals such as the attenuated Radon transform and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for a moving boundary; integral representations for linear boundary value problems; analytical and numerical methods for elliptic PDEs in a convex polygon; and integrable nonlinear PDEs. An epilogue provides a list of problems on which the author's new approach has been used, offers open problems, and gives a glimpse into how the method might be applied to problems in three dimensions.

This summer school is one of the activities promoted by Sino-French International Associate Laboratory in Applied Mathematics (LIASFMA in short). LIASFMA was established jointly by eight institutions in China and France in 2014, which is aimed at providing a platform for some of the leading French and Chinese mathematicians to conduct in-depth researches, extensive exchanges, and student training in the field of applied mathematics. This summer school has the privilege of being the first summer school of the newly established LIASFMA, which makes it significant.
