September 1917 verstarb an einem Herzleiden, schmerzlos und ohne Ahnung von seinem nahen Ende, der Direktor unseres Museums, Geheimer Regierungs rat Dr. August Brauer, Ordentlicher Professor der Zoologie an der Universität und Mitglied der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin. Am September kehrte er nach vier Wochen Urlaub aus dem Teutoburger Walde zuruck, wo er sich zu sammen mit seinen Schwestern in der schöner? Natur gut erholt zu haben schien. Bald aber stellten sich Brustschmerzen ein, die ihn veranlaßten, schon 6 Tage später, am Freitag, einen Arzt aufzusuchen. Da dieser nur achttägige Bettruhe verordnete und die Schmerzen sich verloren, schien die Krankheit nicht bedenklich.' Am Montag aber, etwas nach 2 Uhr mittags, wurde er, aufrecht in seinem Sessel sitzend, die Hände auf die Seitenlehnen gestützt, als ob er hätte aufstehen wollen, tot vor gefunden, nachdem er zehn Minuten vorher noch ganz munter gewesen war. So endete ein arbeitsreiches Leben mitten in voller Tätigkeit und erfüllt von neuen Plänen zur Umgestaltung des Museums. Fast wie eine Ahnung vom Versagen seiner Kräfte klingt es, daß er in seiner Antrittsrede in der Akademie am 1. Juli 1915 schon außerte: Ich zögerte nicht, die hiesige Professur für diese Fächer (systematik und Tiergeographie) zu übernehmen. Nun hatte ich das Material zum Arbeiten in Fülle, aber leider kann ich das Gluck nicht ausnutzen. Denn ein großes Welt museum verwalten, Lehrer und Forscher sein und die Herausgabe der wissenschaft lichen Ergebnisse der deutschen tiefsee-expedition leiten, das sind Aufgaben, die die Arbeitskraft eines Menschen übersteigen, zumal das Museum jetzt einen großen Anbau erhält und mir die Reorganisation der Schau und Hauptsammlung im großen Maßstabe zufällt. Leider hat er Recht behalten, sein Mut wurde nicht belohnt, und es war ihm nicht vergönnt, die Frucht seiner Muhen zu ernten. August Bernhard Brauer wurde am 3. April 1863 zu Oldenburg im Groß herzogtum geboren, als jüngstes Kind evangelischer Eltern, des wohlhabenden Kaufmanns Theodor Brauer und seiner Gattin Marianne geb. Von Darteln. Mit 5 Brüdern und 3 Schwestern verlebte er die erste Jugend im schön gelegenen Elternhause mit großem Garten, wo im Knaben schon frühzeitig die Liebe zur Natur und Kunst und das Interesse an Gartenbau und Blumenpfiege erwachte. Von 1869 - 1872 besuchte er die Vorschule der jetzigen Oberrealschule seiner Vaterstadt und siedelte dann auf das dortige Gymnasium über, welches er im März 1882, ein Jahr nach dem frühen Tode seines Vaters, mit dem Zeugnis der Reife verließ, um Naturwissenschaften, besonders Zoologie, zu studieren.
