Book excerpt: POR ANOS SE HA HECHO CREER QUE EL TEXTO DE LA CREACIÓN DEL GENESIS ES UN MITO, UNA LEYENDA. Y NO ES ASÍ. ESTO ORIGINO QUE EL TEXTO Y EL LIBRO DEL GENESIS VAYAN AL MISMO SACO DE LAS MITOLOGÍAS. LA VERDAD QUE CUANDO SE LE ESTUDIA HOY CON TODOS LOS ELEMENTOS CREADOS Y DESCUBIERTOS CIENTÍFICAMENTE HASTA POR CASUALIDAD. Y APARECEN DESCRITOS EN EL TEXTO. ENTONCES EL TEXTO CALZA PERFECTAMENTE COMO UNA TEORÍA PERFECTA, PARA UN UNIVERSO PERFECTO. ES ALGO RECIPROCO, LÓGICO. SE PEDÍA CREER POR FE.HOY SE DA EL CUMPLIMIENTO DE UNA PROMESA DIVINA MUCHOS CREYENTES BÍBLICOS, EXPRESAN QUE NO NECESITAN DE PRUEBAS CIENTÍFICAS, RESPONDEN QUE SABEN EN QUIEN HAN CREÍDO. ENTIENDO ESA POSICIÓN, PROVIENE DE HEBREOS 11:1- 3 "AHORA BIEN, LA FE ES LA CERTEZA DE LO QUE SE ESPERA, LA CONVICCIÓN DE LO QUE NO SE VE PORQUE POR ELLA RECIBIERON APROBACIÓN LOS ANTIGUOS. POR LA FE ENTENDEMOS QUE EL UNIVERSO FUE PREPARADO POR LA PALABRA DE DIOS, DE MODO QUE LO QUE SE VE NO FUE HECHO DE COSAS VISIBLES. ESTA PROMESA COMO OTRAS, HAN REQUERIDO DE UN TIEMPO, POR MUCHAS RAZONES. EN ESTE CASO, ES LA CREACIÓN DEL UNIVERSO Y SE REQUERÍAN DESCUBRIMIENTOS CIENTÍFICOS. PUES DIOS NO SOLO REVELO SU OBRA PARA UNA GENERACIÓN, SINO PARA TODAS LAS GENERACIONES DE LA HUMANIDAD. PERO HA CUMPLIDO. MIENTRAS PASABA ESE TIEMPO MUCHAS GENERACIONES TUVIERON QUE MANTENERSE EN LA FE DE QUE DIOS LO CREO TODO CONFORME AL RELATO DE LA CREACIÓN DEL GENESIS. PERO LA CREACIÓN DEL UNIVERSO Y LA VIDA ES EN EL 100% MATERIAL Y POR TANTO UNA MEJOR INTERPRETACIÓN DEL TEXTO DE LA CREACIÓN ERA CONTANDO CON DESCUBRIMIENTOS CIENTÍFICOS. HOY LA CIENCIA NOS HA DADO LO SUFICIENTE PARA INTERPRETAR CORRECTAMENTE EN UN ALTO PORCENTAJE DE EFICACIA EL TEXTO DE LA CREACIÓN. MUCHOS DE ESTOS DESCUBRIMIENTOS LLEGARON DE FORMA CASUAL, POR ERRORES O BUSCANDO ALGO DIFERENTE. COMO SEA ERA DIOS MISMO DETRÁS DEL CUMPLIMIENTO DE SU PROMESA. EL TIEMPO DE DIOS DE AYUDARNOS A INTERPRETAR CON ABSOLUTA NITIDEZ Y CON CONOCIMIENTO CIENTÍFICO HA LLEGADO. MUCHOS CREYENTES CREEN QUE LA LUZ FUE LA PRIMERA CREACIÓN. TOTALMENTE EQUIVOCADOS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries, the Hispanic Monarchy was one of the largest and most diverse political communities known in history. At its apogee, it stretched from the Castilian plateau to the high peaks of the Andes; from the cosmopolitan cities of Seville, Naples, or Mexico City to Santa Fe and San Francisco; from Brussels to Buenos Aires and from Milan to Manila. During those centuries, Spain left its imprint across vast continents and distant oceans contributing in no minor way to the emergence of our globalised era. This was true not only in an economic sense-the Hispano-American silver peso transported across the Atlantic and the Pacific by the Spanish fleets was arguably the first global currency, thus facilitating the creation of a world economic system-but intellectually and artistically as well. The most extraordinary cultural exchanges took place in practically every corner of the Hispanic world, no matter how distant from the metropolis. At various times a descendant of the Aztec nobility was translating a Baroque play into Nahuatl to the delight of an Amerindian and mixed audience in the market of Tlatelolco; an Andalusian Dominican priest was writing the first Western grammar of the Chinese language in Fuzhou, a Chinese city that enjoyed a trade monopoly with the Spanish Philippines; a Franciscan friar was composing a piece of polyphonic music with lyrics in Quechua to be played in a church decorated with Moorish-style ceilings in a Peruvian valley; or a multi-ethnic team of Amerindian and Spanish naturalists was describing in Latin, Spanish and local vernacular languages thousands of medicinal plants, animals and minerals previously unknown to the West. And, most probably, at the same time that one of those exchanges were happening, the members of the School of Salamanca were laying the foundations of modern international law or formulating some of the first modern theories of price, value and money, Cervantes was writing Don Quixote, Velázquez was painting Las Meninas, or Goya was exposing both the dark and bright sides of the European Enlightenment. Actually, whenever we contemplate the galleries devoted to Velázquez, El Greco, Zurbarán, Murillo or Goya in the Prado Museum in Madrid; when we visit the National Palace in Mexico City, a mission in California, a Jesuit church in Rome or the Intramuros quarter in Manila; or when we hear Spanish being spoken in a myriad of accents in the streets of San Francisco, New Orleans or Manhattan we are experiencing some of the past and present fruits of an always vibrant and still expanding cultural community. As the reader can infer by now, this book is about how Spain and the larger Hispanic world have contributed to world history and in particular to the history of civilisation, not only at the zenith of the Hispanic Monarchy but throughout a much longer span of time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an award-winning author, astronomer, and anthropologist, an exploration of the scientific and cultural significance of the mesmerizing cosmic display. Since the first humans looked up and saw the sun swallowed by darkness, our species has been captivated by solar eclipses. Astronomer and anthropologist Anthony Aveni explains the history and culture surrounding solar eclipses, from prehistoric Stonehenge to Babylonian creation myths, to a confirmation of Einstein’s theory of general relativity, to a spectacle that left New York City in the moon’s shadow, to future eclipses that will capture human imaginations. In one accessible and engaging read, Aveni explains the science behind the phenomenon, tracks eclipses across the ancient world, and examines the roles of solar eclipses in modern times to reveal the profound effects these cosmic events have had on human history. Colored by his own experiences—Aveni has witnessed eight total solar eclipses in his lifetime—his account of astronomy’s most storied phenomenon will enthrall anyone who has looked up at the sky with wonder. “Aveni’s authoritative but accessible text is the clearest statement of the way our perception of eclipses has changed over the centuries.” —Stuart Clark, New Scientist “Authoritative and engaging.” —Marcelo Gleiser, NPR’s 13.7 “A recommended way to share the spirit of the occasion.” —Laurence A. Marschall, Natural History magazine “Everything you need to enjoy a solar eclipse—and even predict one, just like the Babylonians did! Aveni’s entertaining explorations show the very different impacts eclipses have had on past and present cultures.” —David DeVorkin, National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Here is a handsome edition of one of Borges' ficciones, in a translation first published in Labyrinths in 1962. It's an important story in the Borges' canon, incorporating most of the author's philosophical and esthetic preoccupations in a typically brief compass. With great solemnity and a convincing array of scholarly detail (including annotated references to imaginary books and articles), Borges contocts a fable of an alternate world and its infiltration of our own. The reality of Tlon is idealist: material objects have no existence; language has no nouns; its principal discipline is psychology, since its inhabitants see the universe as nothing but a series of mental processes. A series of 24 illustrations accompanies the text. Their disturbing resemblances to our reality make them appropriate reflections of Borges's imaginative constructs.' -- The Kingston Whig-Standard

Book excerpt: How does the Jesus of the New Testament compare to the Jesus we think we know so well? Join bestselling author Philip Yancey as he conducts an enlightening biblical and historical investigation into the real Jesus. From the manger in Bethlehem to the cross in Jerusalem, Philip Yancey presents a complex character who generates questions as well as answers--a disturbing and exhilarating Jesus who wants to radically transform your life and stretch your faith. In The Jesus I Never Knew, Yancey: Cuts through existing views and preconceptions of Jesus, citing experts from church history, modern history, and popular culture Discusses how different people and cultures view Jesus Dissects popular quotes about Jesus Points us back to the Bible The Jesus I Never Knew will engage your heart, mind, emotions, and senses, preparing you for a new, life-changing encounter with the real Jesus described in the Gospels. Praise for The Jesus I Never Knew: "This is the best book about Jesus I have ever read, probably the best book about Jesus in the whole century. Yancey gently took away my blinders and blazed the trail through my own doubting fears, pious know-it-all, and critical balderdash until I saw the Savior anew and thought I heard him ask me, 'Now whom do you say that I am?' and I understood the question as I never had before." --Lewis B. Smedes, Senior Professor, Fuller Seminary "Philip Yancey takes the reader with him on his very personal journey to Jesus. In The Jesus I Never Knew, I became convinced that the Jesus I met--in some ways for the first time--has known me all along. This book is destined to become a favorite--to recommend to those still seeking Jesus and to pass along to those who've met him, but long to know him more." --Elisa Morgan, President Emerita, MOPS International

Book excerpt: After the publication of The Origins of Totalitarianism in 1951, Hannah Arendt undertook an investigation of Marxism, a subject that she had deliberately left out of her earlier work. Her inquiry into Marx’s philosophy led her to a critical examination of the entire tradition of Western political thought, from its origins in Plato and Aristotle to its culmination and conclusion in Marx. The Promise of Politics tells how Arendt came to understand the failure of that tradition to account for human action. From the time that Socrates was condemned to death by his fellow citizens, Arendt finds that philosophers have followed Plato in constructing political theories at the expense of political experiences, including the pre-philosophic Greek experience of beginning, the Roman experience of founding, and the Christian experience of forgiving. It is a fascinating, subtle, and original story, which bridges Arendt’s work from The Origins of Totalitarianism to The Human Condition, published in 1958. These writings, which deal with the conflict between philosophy and politics, have never before been gathered and published. The final and longer section of The Promise of Politics, titled “Introduction into Politics,” was written in German and is published here for the first time in English. This remarkable meditation on the modern prejudice against politics asks whether politics has any meaning at all anymore. Although written in the latter half of the 1950s, what Arendt says about the relation of politics to human freedom could hardly have greater relevance for our own time. When politics is considered as a means to an end that lies outside of itself, when force is used to “create” freedom, political principles vanish from the face of the earth. For Arendt, politics has no “end”; instead, it has at times been–and perhaps can be again–the never-ending endeavor of the great plurality of human beings to live together and share the earth in mutually guaranteed freedom. That is the promise of politics.
