Book excerpt: 300M steel is widely used in landing gear because of its unique combination of ultrahigh strength with high fracture toughness. However, 300M is vulnerable to both corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) failures with catastrophic consequences for aircraft landing gear. Plating and shot peening surface treatments currently used to extend life are only partly effective. A surface treatment is needed that will mitigate foreign object damage (FOD), corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion cracking. This paper describes the use of low plasticity burnishing (LPB) to mechanically suppress stress sensitive corrosion failure mechanisms in 3.5% salt solution. The fatigue and corrosion fatigue performance of LPB processed 300M steel was compared with shot peened (SP) and low stress ground (LSG) conditions. LPB produced residual compression to a depth of 1.27 mm (0.050 in.), and shot peening only 0.127 mm (0.005 in.), an order of magnitude less. LPB treatment dramatically improved both the HCF performance and corrosion fatigue strength, with and without simulated FOD. The corrosion fatigue strengths of LSG and SP surfaces decreased dramatically, to only 20% and 50%, respectively, of the baseline strength, with no discernible endurance limit behavior under corrosion fatigue conditions. The fatigue behavior was even worse with FOD, simulated with a 0.5 mm (0.020 in.) deep EDM notch, both in air and exposed to salt. In contrast, LPB treated specimens with FOD exhibited a definite endurance limit of 1035 MPa (150 ksi) even under corrosion fatigue conditions. SCC testing of LPB treated landing gear sections at 1030 to 2270 MPa (150 to 180 ksi) static loads was terminated after 1500 hrs without failure, compared to failure in as little as 13 hours without treatment.

Book excerpt: 300M steel is widely used in aircraft landing gear because of its unique combination of strength and fracture toughness, but is vulnerable to foreign object damage (FOD), corrosion fatigue, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) failures with potentially catastrophic consequences. The fatigue, corrosion fatigue in salt water, and SCC performance of LPB processed 300M steel was compared with shot peened (SP) and low stress ground (LSG) conditions. LPB, with and without simulated FOD, produced deep residual compression that dramatically improved both the HCF and corrosion fatigue strength. The fatigue strength of LSG and SP treated surfaces was drastically reduced by salt and FOD exposure with no discernible endurance limit for corrosion fatigue conditions. SCC testing of LPB treated landing gear sections at 1030 to 2270 MPa (150 to 180 ksi) static loads was terminated after 1500 hrs without failure, compared to failure in as little as 13 hours without treatment. Mechanistically, the deep compressive surface residual stresses from LPB treatment mitigated both the individual and synergistic effects of corrosion fatigue and FOD. LPB also reduced the surface stress well below the SCC threshold for 300M, even under high tensile applied stresses, effectively suppressing the SCC failure mechanism.

Book excerpt: A study was conducted on the corrosion behavior of an AerMet 100 steel and a 300M steel. This study included investigations of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), immersion corrosion, salt spray corrosion, and humidity corrosion of both steels. For the SCC investigation, double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens were employed, and for the immersion, salt spray, and humidity corrosion investigations, sheet specimens were used. The SCC rate is less and the threshold stress intensity for stress corrosion (KSubSCC) is greater in the AerMet 100 steel (33 ksi*in less than l/2) than in the 300M steel (19 ksi*in less than 1/2), indicating better SCC resistance of the AerMet 100 steel. In the AerMet 100 steel, the stress corrosion crack grows along an intergranular and transgranular path in the direction of forging deformation. The immersion corrosion and salt spray corrosion rates of the AerMet 100 steel is 33 - 40% and 13 - 20% of those for the 300M steel, respectively. Evidence of humidity corrosion is not detectable in the AerMet 100 steel within the employed test period 110 days, whereas it is substantial (2.0413 mpy or 0.0447 mdd) in the 300M steel. The overall results indicate that the AerMet 100 steel is superior to the 300M steel with respect to the corrosion resistance as well as the mechanical properties. Book excerpt: Steel alloys, such as AF1410 (AMS 6527, UNS K92571) and AerMet 100 (AMS 6532), have been developed which have improved Fracture Toughness characteristics compared to the current landing gear steel alloy, 300M (AMS 6419 and AMS 6257, MIL-S-8844, UNS K44220). The 300M steel is the most widely used material in current landing gear designs. It has been successfully used in thousands of applications. The use of the 300M material necessitates a safe life design criterion where components are retired after on-fourth to one-sixth the laboratory test life. This criterion was established in part due to the relative low fracture toughness of low-alloy steel in the 260 to 300 ksi strength range. The high fracture tough alloys give comparable strength levels with an increase in fracture toughness and better resistance to stress corrosion cracking. These alloys may make possible the consideration of new procedures for operation, maintenance, and inspection. For the present, these materials in the 220 to 280 ksi strength range, cannot be certified to damage tolerant design methods. Even though they may not qualify as damage tolerant in single load path applications, the improved mechanical properties alone may justify the consideration of these materials, especially in corrosive environments. In the future, they may allow on-condition maintenance, crack growth monitoring, and increased ptotential for rework. This document identifies several available materials. It compares properties of 220 to 280 ksi strength range, cannot be certified to damage tolerant design methods. It compares properties of selected low-alloy steels to the higher alloyed steels. It also compares failure modes, maintenance, and inspection techniques. Although cost should be a factor when considering the material selection for landing gear application, this document will only focus on the technical aspects.

Book excerpt: The stress corrosion cracking of AerMet 100 and 300M steels was investigated in aqueous NaCl solutions of different concentrations (0.035-3.5%) but an identical electrical conductivity, employing rising step load test method. The threshold stress intensity for stress corrosion cracking, K(sub ISCC), increases from 15.4 MPa square root of m to 26.4 v with applied cathodic potential for AerMet 100 steel. On the other hand, K(sub ISCC) is relatively constant, 15.4-16.5 MPa square root of m, for all potentials employed, ranging from -1.2 V(sub SCE) to -0.7 V(sub SCE). The open circuit potentials and the K(ISCC) values at those potentials are greater for AerMet 100 steel than for 300M steel. These results indicate the AerMet 100 steel is nobler and more resistant to stress corrosion cracking than 300M steel. The SEM fractographs of both steels show mixed intergranular and cleavage cracking across all potential employed.
