An estimated 500 million birds fatally collide with windows in North America every year. Visual mitigation strategies are thought to be an effective tool but there are very few robust field studies, and many controlled studies lack ecological relevance. This study seeks to test a window film in a more ecologically relevant manner, as well as introduce a novel element, sound. Previous work indicates that sound is an effective way to prevent collisions with freestanding structures. The sound is hypothesized to prompt a bird's visual attention toward the collision hazard. Therefore, we further hypothesized that a sound cue (4-6 kHz oscillating frequency) used in concert with a visual cue (Solyx brand window film) would increase a bird's ability to avoid a window. We exposed 24 zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) to four treatments (control, sound, visual, and sound-visual combined as a multimodal cue) in a balanced order in a flight chamber. A mist net ran the width of the flight corridor to prevent collisions from actually occurring. Each flight was filmed using multiple cameras. From these recordings, we reconstructed the flights in three dimensions and derived several key flight metrics (average velocity, end velocity, minimum distance to the structure, turn distance). We combined these metrics in a principal components analysis (PCA) that led to a quantitative categorization (using permutational multivariate analysis of variance, PERMANOVA) of "lower risk" (birds that made avoidance adjustments early in their flight) or "higher risk" (birds that made avoidance adjustments late in flight and those adjudged to collide with windows) flights. This categorization (lower vs higher risk) served as the response variable for a binomial generalized linear mixed model (GLMM). Based on the model, all three treatments (sound, visual, and multimodal) lowered the probability of riskier flight behavior, although the effect of the sound treatment alone was not as statistically supported as the other two treatments (95% confidence intervals overlapped with 0). Though the multimodal treatment appeared to have a slightly stronger effect than the visual alone, there is little statistical support that a multimodal approach is more effective than a unimodal (visual) one. We argue that multimodal strategies for preventing window collisions warrant further investigation and could have utility in situations where the efficacy of a visual treatment is compromised. While the effect of the sound cue alone was not strong, it was more effective than we predicted. Hence, sound may be an alternative deterrent in situations where applying a window film is not practical.

Through the continuous increase in urbanization, threats to avian wildlife are exacerbated by a multitude of related factors such as habitat loss, fragmentation, and pollution. Bird collisions with buildings are an integral component of these threats because they directly cause avian mortality, and they are expected to increase as human populations continue to grow in urban areas. Bird collisions with buildings represent the largest source of collision mortalities, ahead of collisions with windmills, power lines, and vehicles. Cities serve as physical impediments for numerous bird species, as many urbanized landscapes are located along migratory routes. Birds play an important role in the proper functioning of ecosystems, and they also play an important role within human societies. Therefore, it is important to explore determinants of bird collisions with buildings to identify effective mitigation strategies that aim to counter the rapid decline of bird populations. Previous studies have identified that numerous factors correlate with bird collisions with buildings. These factors include species’ life-history traits, artificial lighting at night, building characteristics, and atmospheric conditions. There are likely a multitude of other factors influencing bird collisions with buildings at any point in time, and this further increases the complexities behind collision dynamics. I evaluated previously identified factors related to bird collisions with buildings to test their influence on bird collisions in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, during fall of 2017. I identified that life-history strategies related to migration distance and foraging height, along with family groupings, differentiated collision frequencies. For example, long-distance migrant and warbler (Family Parulidae) species were overrepresented in their collision frequencies when compared to their local relative abundances. Next, I explored patterns of collision over time and found a complex interaction of variables related to bird collisions with buildings. Variables included in the final model included atmospheric pressure, peak wind speeds, temperature, relative abundance, date, and flying altitude. I also found that time lags were important when exploring determinants of collision. For example, atmospheric conditions (i.e., peak wind speeds) one day before collision events were critical in capturing changing weather conditions over time. This study also found an important multiplicative interaction between Julian date and maximum dry bulb temperature when predicting collision numbers, and this highlights the need to include complex variable interactions when modeling and predicting collision risk. Every year, there are large numbers of bird collisions with buildings, so when exploring and creating efficient mitigation efforts, it is crucial to consider changing atmospheric conditions and avian movement patterns both during and before actual collision events.

These mortalities have impacts on species of conservation concern and potentially on avian populations as a whole. This source of human-wildlife conflict also places economic and operational constraints on various human industries. Furthermore, with continued increases in urbanization, the rate and extent of collisions continues to increase. Efforts to reduce collisions have largely centered on making structures more visible to birds but have been met with limited success. Currently, there is a call for solutions to be tailored to both the environmental context of hazardous structures and to the sensory ecology of at-risk birds. In Chapter 1, we review how and why sensory ecology will help reduce in-flight collision risk for birds. A growing understanding of the sensory systems of birds and of the interface between these systems and the environment will enable the design of appropriate warning and deterrent signals. In particular, we review avian auditory and visual sensory ecology to better understand the susceptibility of birds to collisions and to recommend effective signal design. We highlight the ubiquity and salience of multi-modal signals in avian ecology and evolution, particularly as warning signals, and propose the use of multi-modal signals in mitigating collisions. We encourage the use of animal behavior frameworks to assess collision risk and collision mitigation approaches. Behavioral analyses offer numerous advantages over traditional collision measures, such as mortality estimates. Behavioral data can be generated quickly, render large sample sizes, and allow more nuanced perspectives of the context-dependence of collisions. In Chapter 2, we investigate the use of acoustic signals to reduce avian collisions with structures in open airspace. Birds have largely evolved without tall human-made structures in their flight paths and, consequently, avian perception and behavior may not be suitably primed to detect these novel hazards. Our previous work in captive settings showed that acoustic signals aid in drawing the attention of flying birds to potential collision hazards, influencing flight behavior. The current work corroborates these findings in a field setting. We projected acoustic signals into open airspace surrounding communication towers and quantified movement patterns of birds, to indicate potential collision avoidance behavior. Our results show a ~15% reduction in overall bird activity surrounding towers during sound treatment conditions, compared with control trials. Furthermore, flight movement patterns during sound treatments were characterized by significantly greater distances from and greater displacement of travel direction relative to towers, compared with control trials. Flights during sound treatments also showed significantly slower velocities, compared with control trials. Lower frequency sound stimuli (4-6 kHz) produced larger effect sizes than higher frequency stimuli (6-8 kHz). Results also co-varied with tower location and data collection date, reinforcing an appreciation of the context-dependent nature of collision risk. Our findings will inform the field of avian sensory ecology and help to assess the use of acoustic signals in collision mitigation measures.
