Dieses Thema passt in den Trend des 21. Jahrhunderts, über Jugendgewalt zu berichten. Initiator für die Konjunktur waren die Medien, die sich diesem Thema seit Beginn der 90er Jahre widmen. Dabei wird in der Öffentlichkeit Gewalt immer gleich als körperliche Aggression verstanden, was den Blickwinkel einschränkt. Täter sind immer nur die Schüler/Innen, nicht die Lehrer oder die Institution Schule. Wenn die Medien über Jugendgewalt berichten, dann gerät der Blick automatisch auf die Schule als Aufenthaltsort der Jugend. Untersucht man das Gewaltpotential an Schulen erfährt man etwas über Jugendgewalt allgemein. Diesen Blickwinkel unterstützend, wirkt die Tatsache, dass die Lehrer von einer Gewaltzunahme an Schulen sprechen und sich dadurch in ihrem Berufsalltag gefährdet sehen. Damit wurde die schulinterne Diskussion 1992 ins Rollen gebracht. Dabei geht es um Demotivierung und Zunahme von Aggressionen, die zu einer höheren Belastung im Unterricht führen und die Anforderungen an die Erziehungsarbeit ansteigen lassen. Zeitgleich begann auch die wissenschaftliche Thematisierung dieses Themas. Dabei konnten die empirischen Ergebnisse keine Bestätigung überbordender Gewalt ausmachen. Die Wahrnehmung ansteigender Gewalt muss also eher durch die Sensibilisierung gegenüber Gewalt und der Realitätsverzerrung seitens der Medien erklärt werden. Bisher hat man voreilig familiäre Erziehungsmängel, das Wohnumfeld und Medieneinflüsse als Erklärungsfaktoren herangezogen. Ein kurzer Abriss der Taten aus den letzten Jahren soll zeigen, wie die Schwere der Delikte zugenommen hat und die häufig einen Vorbildcharakter haben unter Schülern. • 1998 lösen ein 11- und ein 13jähriger Schüler an einer Schule in Jonesboro/USA falschen Feueralarm aus und richten unter Schülern und Lehrern ein Blutbad an. • 1999 töten zwei jugendliche Schüler in Littleton/USA mit Schusswaffen und Sprengwaffen 12 Mitschüler und einen Lehrer, bevor sie sich selbst richten. 28 Personen überleben den Amoklauf verletzt. • In Meißen/Deutschland ersticht 1999 ein 15-jähriger Gymnasiast seine Lehrerin. Als Tatmotiv gibt er Hass auf seine Lehrerin an. • Im selben Jahr nimmt die bayrische Polizei in Metten drei Jugendliche fest, die Mordpläne gegen ihre Schulleiterin und eine Lehrerin geschmiedet hatten.

Die theoretischen Überlegungen werden dann an den statistischen Daten des Berliner Senates konkretisiert. Speziell die Hypothese, dass Gewalt unter Jugendlichen zunimmt, wie es von den Medien immer wieder behauptet wird, soll kritisch untersucht werden.
