Download or read book Taking the Back Road Home written by Louis Brodsky and published by Time Being Books. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the Back Road Home's fifty-one poems detail the life of a poet, commemorating his day-to-day encounters with friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers, as he celebrates "the dedication of the self to useful occupations," as well as his more mystical experiences with his wife and with nature. The poems absorb the reader into the writer's existence and grant the imagination free rein within his timeless, imagistic world, where "the empty sky. . . / Is a huge music box with smooth duplex combs / Musing us into taking the back road home."
Book Synopsis This Here's A Merica by : Louis Brodsky
Download or read book This Here's A Merica written by Louis Brodsky and published by Time Being Books. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With This Here's a Merica, L. D. Brodsky reprises his auto-factory-assembly-line worker from south St. Louis, first introduced in Yellow Bricks and Catchin' the Drift o' the Draft. In one of the six pieces that bind the collection, this lovable redneck, who takes the English language all the way back to its murky origins, hosts a "Stupor Bowl Tailgate Key Party," in which he and his three buddies know the score of the game even before it starts and what trophies they'll win: the house keys and wives they swap for the night. We also join him on his extended "lunch break" from the car plant to a "sportin' bar" on the East Side, where Julie No-Name, between performances, indulges him in an "afternoon delight." Other characters jump from the pages as well, including a Vietnam vet, now a doorman, who finds himself transported back to the war whenever it rains, shooting wildly at passing cars with his umbrella as he escorts residents to and from their apartment building. In a postmodern examination of the writing process itself, Brodsky chronicles the rise of another intriguing individual -- a sous-chef who begins his career at a fowl facility, rendering chicken parts into words, and eventually becomes the toast of Manhattan for transforming gizzards into Petrarchan sonnets, necks into short stories. These unique protagonists, and the others in this volume's forty-two fast-paced fictions, lead the reader through a house of mirrors in which everyday reality is twisted in ways magically satirical and absurdly surreal. Their distorted reflections, which become strikingly familiar to us as we recognize our own afflictions and foibles in them, hover in the subconscious long after This Here's a Merica is closed.
Download or read book Shadow War written by Louis Brodsky and published by Time Being Books. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting on April 22, 2002, and concluding on June 16, 2002, Louis Daniel Brodsky's Shadow War, Volume Four traces the primary sources of terrorism that erupted in America on September 11: Israel, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. These poems describe, in bold detail, the desperation of Palestinians and Israelis trying to survive what appears to be an intractable knot of hatred and retaliation. Suicide bombers, demonstrating the depths of radical depravity, are at the center of many of these pieces, as is the Israeli military, frustrated by its inability to deter them. The specter of nuclear war looms as well, in vivid poetic accounts of the political and religious tensions assailing India and Pakistan throughout their struggle to resolve the fate of Kashmir. Brodsky also examines the fledgling government of Afghanistan, as Hamid Karzai strives, with the help of the United States, to keep civil war from regaining control of his country.
Download or read book Dine-Rite written by Louis Daniel Brodsky and published by Time Being Books. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Have a seat at a table or booth in Louis Daniel Brodsky's DINE-RITE: BREAKFAST POEMS. Everyone's welcome. As Brodsky puts it, this suburban diner is an "Oasis to the white- and blue-collar and the collarless: / Contractors, carpenters, painters, and plumbers, / Insurance and sales reps, cab drivers, loafers, / Grass-roots politicians, divorce lawyers, retirees, / The entire cast of the human drama, / Under one home-cooking-spoken-here roof." And overlording this melting pot is its owner, a corpulent, self-anointed Baptist minister, whose unique brand of evangelism permeates Dine-Rite as thoroughly as the greasy, smoky air that wafts from the kitchen. If you're hungry for poetry that both satisfies and leaves you wanting more, then you've come to the right place. Dig in!
Book Synopsis Paper-Whites for Lady Jane by : Louis Brodsky
Download or read book Paper-Whites for Lady Jane written by Louis Brodsky and published by Time Being Books. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sequel to Forever, for Now follows the second year of a romance between two middle-aged lovers, mixing erotic poems with those depicting memorable events they share (attending symphonies, going to the zoo, gardening, listening to jazz, traveling and sightseeing, celebrating holidays) as they journey from passion to the deepening, mellowing affection and intimacy of their new life together. Their growing love is highlighted by a gentle sensuousness, perhaps uncommon to many of us today, that is symbolized by the story's pervasive paper-whites, an exotically scented variety of narcissus, to which the pair devotedly tend.
Download or read book Rated Xmas written by Louis Brodsky and published by Time Being Books. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brandishing the caustic wit that is the hallmark of his four previous books of short fictions, L. D. Brodsky gives "Xmas" an X rating in this latest volume, with his salty-tongued South St. Louis auto-assembly-line "rough," who gets way too far into the Christmas spirit(s). At least deserving of an R rating are some of Brodsky's other outrageous characters, such as the guy who disguises himself as a Persian cat or basset hound to escape the scrutiny of his neighbors; the misguided soul who turns into a UFO; experts in fecal matter and the mortuarial arts; the husband who flies home early to avoid a snowstorm, only to surprise his preoccupied wife; the art forger who's so good he becomes more famous than the masters he copies; and men who mate with bears, whales, and themselves. Drop your quarter into Rated Xmas and view the peepshow that's always playing in Brodsky's mind.

What mom doesn't recall the magical seasons surrounding the birth of her baby--the anticipation felt during pregnancy; the pain and pride, on delivering; the joy of watching her child grow? And what dad can forget saying to himself, upon first holding his infant, "I'm really a father now," with all the accompanying awareness of being responsible for another human being? Chronicling the development of his own firstborn, from her conception through age one, Louis Daniel Brodsky provides, for us all--from experienced parents to those who have yet to see that "gleam in the eye"--a window on that glorious time.

Book Synopsis Eying Widening Horizons by : Louis Brodsky
Download or read book Eying Widening Horizons written by Louis Brodsky and published by Time Being Books. This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fifth and concluding volume of The Seasons of Youth, Louis Daniel Brodsky celebrates his girl's and boy's passage into teenage years, his daughter progressing from age eleven to sixteen and his son from seven to thirteen. Both parents relive their own youths, as their children experience the joys, adventures, and challenges of this formative time. Their son goes to summer camp -- his first trip away from home -- and joins a soccer team and the Cub Scouts. Their daughter begins taking interest in cultural events, by going to weekly dance classes and by occasionally attending the symphony, with her father. During this time, both son and daughter encounter the gravity of death, when they lose pets and, much more powerfully, their mother's brother, their beloved "Uncle Duck." Contrasting with their parents' comforting presence during these milestones is the subtly evolving prospect of divorce. All of these elements unfold before the children, as they eye widening horizons that beckon them to journey toward the adult world, where they'll soon take their places.
Book Synopsis Catchin' the Drift O' the Draft by : Louis Brodsky
Download or read book Catchin' the Drift O' the Draft written by Louis Brodsky and published by Time Being Books. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you enter L.D. Brodsky's Catchin' the Drift o' the Draft, you find yourself in the surreal world of a master satirist. Imagine staring into a mirror and recognizing your reflection as that of a chimpanzee, before you swing to work on a vine, or consider the possibility that you and your spouse are the newest additions to the ape house at the zoo, where your every move is being scrutinized. Prepare yourself for Brodsky's auto-factory-assembly-line worker from south St. Louis, who takes the stage in six pieces that set up a chronological continuity around which the other fictions swirl. His humor is boisterous, whimsical, condemnatory, at times even self-deprecating, his language a study in fractured English that nonetheless debunks conventional wisdom and political correctness, exposing the cant and hypocrisy of 1990s America. These fast-paced fictions, about persons bedeviled by phobias and physical afflictions arising from the realities of old age, racism, and too-rapid change, are pieces of life that examine the world and revel in its absurdities. If Jonathan Swift, Franz Kafka, and Richard Brautigan could collaborate, the result might be Catchin' the Drift o' the Draft, a highly original, satirical, and altogether entertaining collection of forty-one short short fictions. Delight in them.
