Book excerpt: Mist Upon the Pond is a collection of the author's favorite poems, some published, many unpublished, but all aimed squarely at the heartstrings, the bootstraps or the funny bone. As the author says, ". . . the form ever-changing, like the mist upon the pond . . ." A variety of poetic forms and styles, from humorous haiku to heart-wrenching historical narratives, is in this collection. The author's love of the natural world and her passion for history perme-ate many of the offerings, as does her deep, abiding faith in God and love of family. There are light-hearted children's poems and tongue-in-cheek glimpses of sports. Mist Upon the Pond is a collection of eighty-five poems written by the author over the last six years. They are presented here to enter-tain, encourage, amuse, inspire, give comfort and provoke thought. A lifelong resident of Mechanicville, New York, Sandra E. McBride is the mother of six grown children and grandmother of sixteen. She and her hus-band, Tom, reside on the farm that has been in the McBride family for nearly a century. Her childhood dream of becoming a creative writer was put on hold while she reared her fam-ily. Then, at age 55, she enrolled in a writing course at the Institute of Children's Literature and began to pursue that dream in earnest. "You're never too old to chase the dream," she says. Her poetry has appeared in five June Cotner anthologies, in Once Upon a Time, NEWN, Mail Call Journal and online at historyonline.net and Magic Lark Journal. She has published several short stories, and has won numerous awards for her writing. In April 2004, she was honored by her hometown library as their featured poet for National Poetry Month.

Book excerpt: Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction A harvest and not a winnowing, this volume collects 103 stories, almost all of the short fiction that John Updike wrote between 1953 and 1975. “How rarely it can be said of any of our great American writers that they have been equally gifted in both long and short forms,” reads the citation composed for John Updike upon his winning the 2006 Rea Award for the Short Story. “Contemplating John Updike’s monumental achievement in the short story, one is moved to think of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry James, Ernest Hemingway, and perhaps William Faulkner—writers whose reputations would be as considerable, or nearly, if short stories had been all that they had written. From [his] remarkable early short story collections . . . through his beautifully nuanced stories of family life [and] the bittersweet humors of middle age and beyond . . . John Updike has created a body of work in the notoriously difficult form of the short story to set beside those of these distinguished American predecessors. Congratulations and heartfelt thanks are due to John Updike for having brought such pleasure and such illumination to so many readers for so many years.”

Book excerpt: “The Maples stories trace the decline and fall of a marriage,” writes the author in his Foreword, a marriage that is threatened early on by the temptations of infidelity (“Snowing in Greenwich Village”) and that ends in a midlife divorce (“Here Come the Maples”). “They also illumine a history in many ways happy, of growing children and a million mundane moments shared.” That all blessings are mixed and fleeting does not make them less real, and if temporality is held to be invalidating, then nothing real succeeds. “A tribe segregated in a valley develops an accent, then a dialect, and then a language all its own; so does a couple. Let this collection preserve one particular dead tongue, no easier to parse than Latin.”

Book excerpt: Eighteen classic short stories that form a luminous chronicle of the life and times of one marriage in all its rich emotional complexity—from one of the most gifted American writers of the twentieth century and the author of the acclaimed Rabbit series. In 1956, Updike published a story, “Snowing in Greenwich Village,” about a young couple, Joan and Richard Maple, at the beginning of their marriage. Over the next two decades, he returned to these characters again and again, tracing their years together raising children, finding moments of intermittent happiness, and facing the heartbreak of infidelity and estrangement. Seventeen Maples stories were collected in 1979 in a paperback edition titled Too Far to Go, prompted by a television adaptation. Now those stories appear in hardcover for the first time, with the addition of a later story, “Grandparenting,” which returns us to the Maples’s lives long after their wrenching divorce.

Book excerpt: Sweet Mace is a legend taking place in southeast England following the adventures of Gil Carr and Sir Mark Leslie through the lovely English wilderness. Excerpt: "Too soon for sweet mace—a bunch for sweet Mace," said Gil Carr as he bent down amongst the sedges to pick the bright blue scorpion grass, its delicate flowers relieved with yellow, "so she must have forget-me-not. I wonder whether she'll keep some when I'm far away."

David becomes fascinated by an ancient stone circle on a nearby hillside, but his interest turns to a pervading fear when he touches the stones and gets a powerful electric shock. He befriends Westwood, who has a theory that the stones were used in ancient times to call forth water by chanting 'til the vibrations hit a powerful resonating note. Hence the name 'weeping stones'. And after centuries asleep, something has re-activated them. David's father dismisses Westwood as an eccentric dabbler, and the townspeople throw him out as suspicious and untrustworthy. But Westwood's theory predicts a catastrophic flood - unless David can convince everyone of the stones' extraordinary force, find out what has woken them and turn the power back ...

Book excerpt: Peter Bush, winner of the Ramon Llull Prize for Literary Translation, brings to English this most prolific and influential of Catalan writers. Dripping with a panache that can turn in a comic instant to the most conciliatory humility, Josep Pla's foray into the land and sea most familiar to him will plunge readers head-first into its mysterious (and often tasty!) depths. Here are adventures and shipwrecks, raspy storytellers and the fishy meals that sustain them. After describing the process of beating an octopus with branches to soften up its flesh, Pla writes, "These are dishes that must be seen as a last resort." Pla inflects the mundane with the hidden rhythms of power sculpting culture, so that a hot supper is never just food--it embodies economic precarity and environmental erosion along with its own peculiar flavor. A lifetime of reporting on current events gave Pla the necessary skills to describe the world in all its gritty, funny, invigorating detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as the founder of the modern conservative movement, Russell Kirk was a noted man of letters whose prodigious literary output included a syndicated newspaper column, a regular page in "National Review," and many books. This volume demonstrates another compelling side of Kirk -- the imaginative author who could communicate his powerful vision through the dramatic genre of the ghost story. "Ancestral Shadows" collects nineteen of Kirkbs best ghostly tales from periodicals and anthologies published throughout his life. In the tradition of Defoe, Stevenson, Hawthorne, Coleridge, Poe, and other master writers, these frightful stories conjure the creaks and shadows of the very places where they came to life through Kirkbs pen: haunted St. Andrews, the Isle of Eigg, Kellie Castle, Balcarres House, Durie House (bwhich has the most persistent of all country-house spectresb), and Kirkbs own ancestral spooky house in Mecosta, Michigan. Full of fantastic gothic tales masterfully told, the volume ends with bA Cautionary Note on the Ghostly Tale, b an incisive piece in which Kirk reflects on why he writes such stories: bexperiments in the moral imaginationb are what he is really after. Ghost stories are not merely entertaining but possess a particular ability to capture the essential features of human nature, of good and evil. bAll important literature has some ethical end, b Kirk says, band the tale of the preternatural -- as written by George Macdonald, C. S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and other masters -- can be an instrument for the recovery of moral order.b Including an illuminative introduction by Vigen Guroian, "Ancestral Shadows" will enthrall and delight all lovers ofghost stories.
