Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although alluvial floodplains constitute a relatively small portion of the United States, floodplain soils assume an exaggerated engineering significance because most inland cities are located along the banks of major rivers. Iowa is uniquely situated between two major rivers, the Mississippi on the east and the Missouri on the west. Because of the extent of the Missouri River floodplain and the availability of recent topographic maps, a portion of this floodplain adjacent to Iowa was selected for study. Deposits were systematically mapped, sampled and tested. The present report summarizes field and laboratory data from 88 samples from 41 borings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purposes of this investigation are: 1) To delineate flood plain deposits with different geologic and engineering properties. 2) To provide basic data necessary for any attempt at stabilizing flood plain deposits. The alluvial valley of the Missouri River adjacent to Iowa was chosen as the logical place to begin this study. The river forms the western boundary of the state for an airline distance of approximately 139 miles; and the flood plain varies from a maximum width of approximately 18 miles (Plates 2 and 3, Sheets 75 and 75L) to approximately 4 miles near Crescent, Iowa (Plate 8, Sheet 66). The area studied includes parts of Woodbury, Monona, Harrison, Pottawattamie, Mills, and Fremont counties in Iowa and parts of Dakota, Thurston, Burt, Washington, Douglas, Sarpy, Cass and Otoe counties in Nebraska. Plate l is an index map of the area under consideration.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive study of the historical geomorphology of the Middle Mississippi River was made to determine the physical impact of river contraction works on river morphology and behavior, and subsequent effects on the side channels. The studies included physical model studies of the river and side channels, the combined effects of navigation improvement structures and flood protection works on flood stages, and a review of the history of development and modification of the Middle Mississippi River.
