Book excerpt: In this New York Times bestselling book, the police chief who led one of the most suspenseful manhunts in American history takes readers behind the headlines into the notorious “D.C. sniper” case that held the nation spellbound. In October 2002, ordinary Americans feared for their lives, too frightened to pump gas at the local station or let their children play outside. For twenty-three nightmarish days, a series of random sniper killings terrorized the Washington, D.C. area and launched the largest manhunt in American history—under the harsh glare of a media frenzy. Three Weeks in October follows Charles Moose’s efforts to crack a seemingly unsolvable case. As a stunned nation watched, Chief Moose stood tall in the face of horrific events—a courageous presence whose tenacity brought snipers John Allen Muhammed and Lee Boyd Malvo to justice. But this is also the inspirational story of Moose’s rise from a young African American cop battling prejudice to a respected chief of police—who couldn’t stop until he captured two of the most bizarre killers America has ever known. “Compelling . . . A very candid story . . . Well worth reading.”—The Washington Post “Fascinating.”—The Daily Oklahoman “Gutsy, endearing, no-nonsense . . . [cuts] through all the hubbub to show that behind the provocative headlines was little more than a simple, heartfelt man just trying to do the best job he could.”—Publishers Weekly

Three women vanish from a home in Springfield in 1992 on high school graduation night. A young woman is abducted in Ava and murdered after mowing a church cemetery. A 9 year-old disappears and her body is found in 1975. A nurse and her children are killed in their home in a quiet new subdivision, and two mothers have vanished without a trace. An elderly woman who has been featured on the album cover of a popular band is murdered in her Aldrich home. Just as solved cold cases have become popularized in a variety of television documentaries, Missouri cases are also becoming closed. DNA has been the smoking gun in one 25 year-old homicide and has sent a prominent businessman to prison. People are talking and in the case of a 15 year-old murdered in 1982, there have been convictions. Surveillance tapes and cell phones have been added to the arsenal of evidence. Files are being revised and the media is featuring their stories again. These are some of the victims cases and their families who press on and the organizations, detectives, and experts who support them.

Book excerpt: From the duel on Bloody Island to the Missouri Miracle kidnapping and recovery of Shawn Hornbeck, Missouri has seen its share of notorious crimes. It was home to the first western gunfight on the town square between Wild Bill Hickok and Dave Tutt. The three trials of the alleged murderer of Colonel Thomas Swope, the founder of Kansas City's Swope Park, enveloped the state. Residents also saw the killings within a few blocks of each other that inspired the songs Stagger Lee and Frankie and Johnny. Vicki Berger Erwin and James W. Erwin explore crimes, criminals and victims from the violent history of the last two hundred years in the Show Me State.

What followed over the next 23 days, was an unbelievable tale of intrigue, as salacious facts revealed the murderers had seduced a female prison employee into aiding in their plan to escape. Swept up by their artful manipulation, she smuggled hacksaw blades into the prison in frozen hamburger, engaged in sexual conduct with one of the inmates, and schemed to pick them up at midnight as they emerged from a manhole cover outside prison walls, in the heart of the village. To clear the way for their planned escape to Mexico, there allegedly was even talk of murdering her unsuspecting husband, to remove the “glitch.” This is the inside story of the terrorized community, the outstanding men and women of law enforcement, and the State Trooper responsible for capturing the inmates.

Book excerpt: Now an Apple TV+ Series “A terrific narrative of the hunt for Lincoln’s killers that will mesmerize the reader from start to finish.”—Doris Kearns Goodwin The murder of Abraham Lincoln set off the greatest manhunt in American history--the pursuit and capture of John Wilkes Booth. From April 14 to April 26, 1865, the assassin led Union cavalry troops on a wild, 12-day chase from the streets of Washington, D.C., across the swamps of Maryland, and into the forests of Virginia, while the nation, still reeling from the just-ended Civil War, watched in horror and sadness. Based on rare archival materials, obscure trial transcripts, and Lincoln’s own blood relics Manhunt is a fully documented, fascinating tale of murder, intrigue, and betrayal. A gripping hour-by-hour account told through the eyes of the hunted and the hunters, it is history as it’s never been read before.

Duck into the Slicker War of the 1840s, a vigilante movement that devolved into a lingering feud in which the two sides sometimes meted out whippings, called slickings, on each other. Or witness the Kansas City Massacre of 1933, a shootout between law enforcement officers and criminal gang members who were trying to free Frank Nash, a notorious gang leader being escorted to federal prison. Follow Larry Wood through the most shameful and savage portion of the Show-Me State's history.

Book excerpt: North of Los Angeles - the studios, the beaches, Rodeo Drive - lies a sparsely populated region that comprises fully one half of Los Angeles County. Sprawling across 2200 miles, this shadow side of Los Angeles is in the high Mojave Desert. Known as the Antelope Valley, it's a terrain of savage dignity, a vast amphitheatre of startling wonders that put on a show as the megalopolis burrows northward into the region's last frontier. Ranchers, cowboys, dreamers, dropouts, bikers, hikers, and felons have settled here - those who have chosen solitude over the trappings of contemporary life or simply have nowhere else to go. But in recent years their lives have been encroached upon by the creeping spread of subdivisions, funded by the once easy money of subprime America. McMansions - many empty now - gradually replaced Joshua trees; the desert - America's escape hatch - began to vanish as it became home to a latter-day exodus of pilgrims. It is against the backdrop of these two competing visions of land and space that Donald Kueck - a desert hermit who loved animals and hated civilization - took his last stand, gunning down beloved deputy sheriff Steven Sorensen when he approached his trailer at high noon on a scorching summer day. As the sound of rifle fire echoed across the Mojave, Kueck took off into the desert he knew so well, kicking off the biggest manhunt in modern California history until he was finally killed in a Wagnerian firestorm under a full moon as nuns at a nearby convent watched and prayed. This manhunt was the subject of a widely praised article by Deanne Stillman, first published in Rolling Stone, a finalist for a PEN Center USA journalism award, and included in the anthology Best American Crime Writing 2006. In Desert Reckoning she continues her desert beat and uses Kueck's story as a point of departure to further explore our relationship to place and the wars that are playing out on our homeland. In addition, Stillman also delves into the hidden history of Los Angeles County, and traces the paths of two men on a collision course that could only end in the modern Wild West. Why did a brilliant, self-taught rocket scientist who just wanted to be left alone go off the rails when a cop showed up? What role did the California prison system play in this drama? What happens to people when the American dream is stripped away? And what is it like for the men who are sworn to protect and serve?

He was later hired as a corrections officer with the office and in February 1973 was sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff. In 1978 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of sheriff at the age of twenty-six making him the youngest candidate to seek the office in the history of the county. After the election he continued his career with the Florence, Alabama Police Department where he quickly rose through the ranks being appointed Chief of Police in 1996. He retired as Chief in 2012 after serving more than thirty-two years with the department. He ran for sheriff again in 2014, winning both the primary and the general election by an overwhelming margin. He ran for a second term unopposed, the first candidate for the Office of Sheriff to ever do so. He retired after his second term in January 2023 after a career that span five decades. Sheriff Singleton received a master's degree in criminal justice from the University of Alabama in 1982. He also graduated from the 138th session of the FBI National Academy, the Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (LEEDS), and the National Sheriff's Institute (NSI). He and his wife, Peggy, were married in 1976 and they have two daughters, Scarlett Singleton Nokes who is an attorney, and Stephane Singleton Bolton who teaches first grade. Book Description (350 Word Limit) * On April 29th, 2022, at 9:41 a.m., Vicky White, the Assistant Administrator and sixteen-year veteran of the Lauderdale County Detention Center in Lauderdale County Alabama, walked Casey White (no relation) a convicted felon serving 75 years with the Alabama Department of Corrections and awaiting trial on a capital murder charge in the death of Connie Ridgeway, out the detention center door. A model employee with an unblemished record, the escape caught her supervisors, co-workers, and even her own family totally off guard. On the run for eleven days, the escape caught the attention of the national media and, ultimately, by media outlets around the world. With a six-hour lead and nothing to go on, the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office and the United States Marshals Service Gulf States Regional Fugitive Task Force sprang into action. The couple were captured on May 9th in Evansville, Indiana. Vicky White died the next day, the result of a self-inflicted gunshot would to the head that happened when they were stopped by law enforcement. This is the story of the escape as shared by Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton, the man responsible for seeing that Casey White was recaptured, and that Vicky White was returned to Alabama to face the consequences of her actions. At the first press conference with the national media, Sheriff Singleton told reporters "it's all on the table, the good, the bad, and the ugly". He honored that commitment by being accessible and transparent with the media, who he credits with playing a major role in apprehending the pair due to the massive coverage they gave the case between April 29th and May 9th
