Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if certain factors as well as the influence of these factors affect the perceptions of assistant principals' readiness to pursue the principalship. Mississippi high school assistant principals (n=107) responded to an online questionnaire that gathered personal and professional demographic data and also collected a readiness rating as well as an influence of factors ratings both based on a 5- point Likert scale. A multiple linear regression was used to predict the readiness of assistant principals to pursue the principalship based on personal and professional factors as well the influence of those factors. The regression model revealed a positive, statistically significant predictor of readiness in assistant principals to pursue the principalship with single, never married individuals and negative, statistically significant predictors of readiness with the factors of assistant principals that make between $125,000 and $149,999 and $150,000 and $174,999. The influence of years of experience and level of degree reported as being positive, significant predictors of readiness and the influence of amount of children reported as being a negative, significant predictor of readiness. According to Crow (2006), the principalship is a complex role. Simon and Newman (2003) add that recruiting and retaining highly qualified principals are becoming more difficult. Opportunities for those ready to transition into the principalship, are available. When aspiring principals can accurately assess their readiness to pursue the principalship, they are then empowered to transition into the position with confidence, creating the opportunity for a more successful experience personally and professionally. --Page ii.

Book excerpt: Research has documented the need for school districts to recruit and retain qualified school leaders capable of navigating the organizational challenges for school improvement, particularly in high-poverty, low-achievement contexts. Recently, scholars have studied principal pipeline structures implemented by school districts to recruit and retain effective principals. A key finding of this research is that clearly-defined standards and performance criteria can inform school districts' strategic identification and development of individuals with the potential to become effective principals. Further research is needed to understand and define potential and readiness for the principalship in assistant principals, commonly the largest candidate group in a principal pipeline. I used a qualitative case study design to investigate veteran principals' perceptions about potential and readiness for the principalship in assistant principals. Six principals in one urban school in Texas were purposefully selected based on their experience with supporting, developing, and/or endorsing former assistant principals for promotion to the principalship while under their supervision. I collected data through questionnaires and in-depth interviews to understand this phenomenon through the informants' lived experience. I found that the principals view professional competence and personal dispositions as indicators of potential and readiness for the principalship. They believe an assistant principal's potential to perform as a principal is evident in the processes and products of their work, but they don't believe all high-potentials are necessarily ready to become principals. Shared leadership was instrumental to developing readiness for the principalship in their assistant principals, and developing capacity by building on strength and targeting weakness worked equally well in their experience. Using these findings and existing research, I identify state and district-level policy implications for the field. I also make recommendations for further study of this topic in the future.

Limited research exists describing the preparation of assistant principals for advancement. The purpose of this convergent mixed methods research study was to examine the relationship between beliefs and perceived experiences during assistant principalship and readiness to assume the role of principal. The 33 participants in this study were public school principals currently employed in a school district in Middle Georgia. The three data sources in this study included a Demographic Survey, Principal Readiness Inventory, and Qualitative Questionnaire, which were combined into one online measure for data collection purposes. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted using the quantitative data, and a thematic analysis was utilized to analyze the qualitative data by principal readiness group. According to the data collected, participants reported higher levels of mentoring prior to the initial educational leadership certification compared to the level of mentoring after the initial educational leadership certification. This information could be useful in developing effective leadership development programs that would help assistant principals make a transition into the principalship role.

Educational organizations are constantly seeking ways to improve the process of supporting the campus level administrators. In many cases, the principalship comes by way of serving time and gaining experience as an assistant principal. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived skills, experiences of assistant principals in middle schools that led to their current success as a principal. The study results also identified kinds of mentor experiences as well. A mixed-method research design was utilized for collecting data. Descriptive and qualitative data were collected first from a questionnaire administered to selected Texas middle school principals. Descriptive data included age, number of years of experience in education, Educational Service Center region, years as an assistant principal, and years as a principal. Qualitative data was gathered from principals to provide a personal perspective. The narratives collected provided the principals perceived critical skills, assignments, and experiences that led to the success as middle school principals. The perceived critical skills of principals were ranked using the abilities necessary for success as campus administrators. Formal and informal mentoring practices were identified through the qualitative narratives. Based on the narratives of principals, results from the study revealed the more hands-on experiences an assistant principal can have the better and more ready for the principalship individuals are. Principals noted experiences dealing with communication, campus instructional leadership, meeting the needs of special populations, and attending to the details were the most important activities for assistant principals to have in preparation for becoming a principal. Ultimately, principals expressed the more involved an assistant principal is with the frameworks of education, the more successful they are as principals.

In this dissertation, a quantitative examination was employed to examine how the assistant principals perceived their preparedness to attain a school principalship. Additionally, this study investigated to find if a relationship between specific leadership styles (distributive, transactional, laissez-faire, and transformational) and the preparedness of assistant principals was present. The participants for this quantitative study consisted of 100 practicing 7-12 high school assistant principals in the state of Missouri. Data collection methods included a researcher created survey identifying the perceived leadership style of their principal as well as their perceived preparedness to fill the role of principal. The data revealed distributive leadership as the style most employed by the high school principals. Overall the assistant principals perceive they are prepared to assume the role of principal. However, there is a discrepancy in assistant principal's perceived preparedness in the area of instructional leadership as compared to disciplinarian and managerial skills. Overall, the distributive leadership style was shown to be the most effective method employed to increase preparedness of the assistant principal to fulfill the role of principal in the areas of disciplinarian and supervisor of students. The implications for practice may impact the preparatory program of principals, as the programs seek ways to improve assistant principal training at the university level. In addition, there is a need to improve the mentorship of assistant principals by the principal examining how the principal can share in more depth the role and responsibilities of instructional leadership. To increase the preparedness of the assistant high school principal for the role of principal a myriad of roles and responsibilities, beyond disciplinarian and supervisor of students must be provided.

Educators who choose to pursue K-12 public school administrative positions often envision themselves becoming principals. However, there are some individuals who have been unable to achieve that goal. This study investigated perceived obstacles to promotion from the assistant principalship to the principalship. The study examined the shared experiences of assistant principals to determine if exposure and experience with certain types of activities and responsibilities better prepare assistant principals for the principalship. The study also explored the concept of being stuck in the role of assistant principal. The findings of the research support that being stuck as an assistant principal is largely a self-imposed barrier, in which assistant principals have found themselves stuck due to their own actions. These actions suggest and include damaged relationships with the principal (which could be caused by actions of the AP and/or the principal); poor decision making; patterns of mistakes made; assistant principals failing to seek additional experiences and opportunities. Although there were two study participants who felt stuck in the role of AP as a result of race and/or gender bias, these two individuals did achieve promotion to the district level, bypassing the principalship. Stuckness is hard to admit; however, the ability to become unstuck is dependent on the individual assistant principal seeking avenues for feedback and forgiveness if they have been involved in previous incidents or mistakes. Principals strongly shape the conditions for high-quality teaching, and high-quality principals are vital to the effectiveness of our nation’s school (Fry, O’Neill, & Bottoms, 2006; Wallace Foundation, 2013, 2016). Principal preparation is the pathway for aspiring urban principals to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions they need to be effective school leaders (Darling-Hammond, Lapointe, Meyerson, & Orr, 2007; Tucker, Young, & Korchoreck, 2012). Bandura (2012) theorizes that self-efficacy, the belief in one’s ability to achieve a specific task and produce the desired results, rather than one’s actual abilities move individuals to accomplish self-determined goals. This study examined the development of self-efficacy among aspiring urban principals for the role of an instructional leader through the lens of Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory (1986) and the Cognitive Coaching Framework (2002). The research employed a mixed-method sequential explanatory case study design with 57 aspiring urban principals using the Principals’ Sense of Self-Efficacy Scale (PSES). In addition, 16 semi-structured interviews were conducted with aspiring urban principals who did not receive coaching during pre-service training and aspiring urban principals who received coaching during pre-service training. The following overarching research question was addressed: How does having a school leadership coaching during pre-service training influence aspiring urban principals’ perceptions of self-efficacy in readiness for the role of instructional leadership? The related research questions asked: To what extent do differences exist in aspiring urban principals who received on-the-job coaching during pre-service training and those who did not in their perceived ability to set direction, develop people and redesign the organization to develop one that supports the performance of administrators, teachers, and students? Overall, the findings from the study support the idea that coaching during pre-service training can positively influence aspiring urban principals’ sense of self-efficacy for the role of an instructional leader. Through ongoing feedback and engagement, modeling of best practices in coaching, as well as accountability and encouragement. This research supports several recommendations for educational institutions charged with preparing urban school principals, which include, the addition of coaching as a component in preparation programs and ensuring that current practitioners with knowledge of the current work in the field serve as instructors within these preparation programs.

Over the last several years there have been major reforms in education such as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 that constitute a re-examination of all roles in K-12 schools. An online survey was used to gather data from assistant principal and principals in the State of Mississippi.Overall, 9 out of the 10 variables are significant except problem solving in the second MANOVA which reports the results of the comparison of the first year assistant principals and principals. This variable showed no significant difference between assistant principals and principals in regards to problem solving with a significance of .239. In each of these variables assistant principals rated the skills as more important than principals. The results of this study suggest that school districts and state departments of education should consider providing more training for assistant principals and principals about instructional leadership.

School principals face challenges to increase student achievement under the mandated education legislative to promote student learning. Principal self-efficacy presents as a critical variable to explore given the challenges to lead in the current era of accountability and important school legislation. This study aims to determine if principal self-efficacy influences student achievement scores. Specifically, it investigates the relationships between school readiness, school climate, graduation rates in Georgia public schools; and a subset of schools to understand the relationship between these variables and principal self-efficacy. Fourteen Georgia high school principals completed the Principal Sense of Efficacy Scale developed by Tschannen-Moran and Gareis to assess their sense of self-efficacy. Principals also self-reported their school achievement scores. The researcher accessed individual school high school graduation rates, climate, and readiness scores from the Georgia College and Career Readiness Performance Index through the Georgia Department of education public website. A quantitative study was suitable to examine the relationship between the study variable. Responses were analyzed using the Pearson Correlational Statistical analysis. The results showed significant associations between the Georgia public school data, high school graduation school rate, readiness, and climate scores. These results warrant that further research on the topic of principal self-efficacy and student achievement. Principal self-efficacy is grounded in Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory. This theory proves that a strong sense of self-efficacy encourages a strong belief in one’s capabilities to master a challenge rather than giving up. School principals with a strong sense of self-efficacy are necessary given the demands of educational, legislative reform.

Book excerpt: This research study examines the perceptions of the assistant principal's role in school leadership in an effort to understand the opportunities and constraints inherent in current configurations of the assistant principal position and whether and how those opportunities and constraints might affect an instructional leadership role. The study is organized around the following key research questions: (1) What does the current role of assistant principals look like? (2) How are the role requirements and responsibilities determined and what is the intent? (3) In what ways, or to what extent, can these assigned tasks and responsibilities be seen as preparation for the principalship? (4) What trainings and experiences do assistant principals perceive to be missing from their current role that could assist them in assuming a principal position? This study concluded that although the role of the assistant principal still remains mired in managerial and clerical duties, such as attendance and discipline, the role of today's assistant principal appears to have expanded to one that includes staff supervision, instructional leadership, and curriculum development. Results from this study suggest that while the principal is still a strong influence over the role requirements and responsibilities of assistant principals, this influence is more positive rather than negative. While the respondents identified finance, school law and special education as key areas that are still largely missing from their work assignments, the data from this study showed that principals are currently providing instructional leadership opportunities that allow for their assistant principals to grow their leadership skills and be seen as leaders.

The demands on principals have changed and principals “are asked to lead in a new world marked by unprecedented responsibilities, challenges, and managerial opportunities” (Hess & Kelly, 2005, p. 1). Leadership models such as the Transformational Leadership model and the Transactional Leadership model have promise, but seem to fall short of equipping leaders to meet the demands of leadership in this modern era (Avolio & Gardner, 2005). The Authentic Leadership model, however, is distinct from other forms of leadership and is a model that will enhance trust, hope, and optimism (Endrissat, Muller, & Kaudela-Baum, 2007; Avolio, Gardner, Walumbwa, Luthans, & Douglas, 2004). Trust in principals has been shown to have a positive relationship with teacher work engagement and student achievement (Tschannen-Moran & Hot, 2000). This study used a Pearson correlation coefficient to examine the relationship between an assistant principals’ perception of their principal’s level of Authentic Leadership skills (independent variable) and the assistant principals’ perceptions of trust in their principal (dependent variable). The Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) was used to rate the assistant principals’ perceptions of their principals’ Authentic Leadership skills and the Workplace Trust Survey (WTS) was used to rate the assistant principals’ level of trust in their principal. A cumulative Authentic Leadership score and the scores of four components of Authentic Leadership (relational transparency, internal moral perspective, balanced processing, and self-awareness) were examined for a relationship with trust. Findings indicated a significant positive relationship between assistant principals’ perceptions of their principal’s Authentic Leadership skills and their levels of trust in their principals. There was also a positive relationship between each of the four components of Authentic Leadership and trust.
