His mother was a half-breed Chippewa. His parents lived on the St. Louis River, above Fond du Lac, at the time of his birth, about 1815, but they soon after moved to Sault Ste. Marie. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mission Work Among the Negroes and the Indians: What Is Being Accomplished by Means of the Annual Collection Taken Up for Our Missions No less urgent is our duty to the poor Red Man. It 15 sad 'dening to know that out of a total population of 27 0 000 Indians 1111 our country, more than 100, 000 are stillxlieatl1ens. It need not be so. The Indian can be led to love the Catholic Religion. To him the Black Robe comes as a messenger from heaven; he listens, we may say, to no other; the one bright page in his history is his improvement the influence of the Catholic priest; while there IS nothing so noble m the annals of America as the long story of the heroism of our missionaries among the Indians. Today, as in the past, we have many brave, apostolic men preaching the Gospel to them, while our sisters, no less zealously, devote their liv 135 to the training of the little ones. It Is a pamful, laborious life for priest and 111111; but perseverance and self denial Win their reward and today more than one-third of our Indian population is Catholic Yet the support of all these most useful schools and missions is maintained only with difficulty; and for lack of funds new schools and 1111s's1ons, just as urgently needed, cannot be created. More organized efforts are now being made, and much good may be hoped for from the Marquette League and the Society for the Preservation of the Faith among Indian Children, both of which we heartily endorse and recommend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mission Work Among the Negroes and the Indians: What Is Being Accomplished by Means of the Annual Collection Taken Up for Our Missions, 1915 It is withthe utmost confidence that we once again appeal to your generosity in behalf Of the Negro and Indian Missions. Each recurring year gives evidence Of your zeal for those needy portions Of the Lord's Vineyard, and your charity in the past is a presage Of your future efforts. Blessed as has been the Church in this, country, we feel that a most urgent duty rests upon us Of furthering Christ's King dom and Of bringing light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow Of death. Upon us who are Of the household of Faith rests the burden Of spreading the Gospel among our less fortunate brethren and that burden rests, not upon any individual or society, but upon the entire Catholic Church in the United States. At our very doors millions Of souls are crying for the bread Of life. Thiey are in our midst and we cannot be deaf or indifferent to their cries. There is no more glorious work than that Of spreading Christ's name and in that work all may have a share. He died at La Pointe in 1836, and was buried in the old Catholic cemetery, on the beach near Middle fort River. His two sons, Jean Baptiste and Michel, fought in the British army in the war of 1812. Both received serious wounds, Michel losing an arm in battle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mission Work Among the Negroes and the Indians, 1892: What Is Being Accomplished by Means of the Annual Collection Taken Up for Our Missions The vast amount of good that is being. Done by means of the Negro and Indian fund 13 known only to those who are thoroughly acquainted with the actual state of Catholicity among the Negroes and Indians. Each recurring apportionment of the annual collection becomes the foundation of some new enterprise; churches, schools and hospitals have been founded on the aid extended by the Commission and look to it for future encouragement. The good work Is spreading and needs, especially at the present time, all the stimulus that can be git/en to it in the shape of moral and financial support. A glance at the financial statement for thel last five years shows an almost steady falling off In the amounts contributed for this work, the total footing up 70 and the collection for 1891 standing 14 less than 111 1887. This is a rather saddening fact when we have such a Work before us, and when the Rt. Rev. Bishop of Little Rock tells us that $18, of Northern money has been spent on the colored people of Since the war, by Protestants and Protestant churches. A goodly sum of money has however been contributed and great good has been ae' complished. Among the reports from the Negro missions, those from the dioceses of Covington, Galveston and Natchitoches are particularly encouraging. In many other places real substantial work has been done. The Bishops of Mobile and Little Rock say that they feel they are sowing the good seed though no very striking results have yet been secured. Archbishop Janssens is accomplishing much against very discouraging odds. In the face of disheartening indifi'erence and har rassing opposition as in more favored spots, we everywhere, both in the Negro and Indian missions, come upon a courageous, simpleminded. Devotedness that can have its principle only In faith and the love of God and of souls. The Bishop of Jamestown writes a vigorous letter of appeal In behalf of his Indians, and among the many interesting details' concerning Indian mission work nothing will be found more readable than a letter from Alaska written to his brother by Rev. William H. Judge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Peter Jones will still be familiar to many who recollect his visit to this country in 1831, for the purpose of urging upon the Government the territorial rights of his fellow-countrymen. There is probably no one who can speak with more authority than he, on the past state of the North American Indians, probably of the Ojebway nation, to which he himself belonged; and of the amelioration of their condition consequent on their conversion to Christianity. It must ever be a matter of regret that his graphic and interesting narrative was never completed by his own hand. To the lovers of philology, and to all who take an interest in these remarkable people, his brief account of the different languages in use among the various tribes will possess great interest. The sketch of his life is drawn up by his widow, with whom he left his many interesting Mss. The publisher has the pleasure of appending the following letter from the Rev. G. Osborn, D.D., Secretary of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society: - "Sir, I have read with much interest the proof-sheets you were kind enough to send me, of a posthumous work by the late Rev. Peter Jones, formerly a missionary in connexion with this Society, among the Chippeway or, as it is now written, Ojebway Indians, in Upper Canada.
