Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa: Including a Sketch of Sixteen Years' Residence in the Interior of Africa When honored with a special meeting of welcome by the Royal Geographical Society a few days after my arrival in London in December last, Sir Roderick Murchison, the President, invited me to give to the world a narrative of my travels; and at a similar meeting of the Directors of the London Missionary Society I publicly stated my intention of sending a book to the press, instead of making many of those public appearances which were urged upon me. The preparation of this narrative has taken much longer time than, from my inexperience in authorship, I had anticipated. Greater smoothness of diction and a saving of time might have been secured by the employment of a person accustomed to compilation; but my journals having been kept for my own private purposes, no one else could have made use of them, or have entered with intelligence into the circumstances in which I was placed in Africa, far from any European companion. Those who have never carried a book through the press can form no idea of the amount of toil it involves. The process has increased my respect for authors and authoresses a thousand-fold. I can not refrain from referring, with sentiments of admiration and gratitude, to my friend Thomas Maclear, Esq., the accomplished Astronomer Royal at the Cape. I shall never cease to remember his instructions and help with real gratitude. The intercourse I had the privilege to enjoy at the Observatory enabled me to form an idea of the almost infinite variety of acquirements necessary to form a true and great astronomer, and I Was led to the conviction that it will be long before the world becomes overstocked with accomplished members of that profession. Let them be always honored according to their deserts; and long may Maclear, Herschel, Airy, and others live to make known the wonders and glory of creation, and to aid in rendering the pathway of the world safe to mariners, and the dark places of the earth open to Christians! Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular Account of Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa MY own inclination would lead me to say as little as possible about myself but several friends have suggested that, as the reader likes to know something about an author, a short account Of my origin and early life would lend additional interest to this book. Such is my excuse for the following egotism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tanganyika: Eleven Years in Central Africa Have before me, in my own handwriting, nine teen little books of notes and records of voyages, travels, and work in Central Africa, much of their contents being but abbreviated aids to memory altogether about 1000 pages of ms., which, if copied without extension, would themselves fill a large volume. I have been asked, however, to write within a limited space a history of the Central African Mis sion, in the prosecution of which those records have been accumulated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunshine and Shade in Central Africa Tms simple story is written for the benefit of the young people and children of our schools. The I element in the book is much to the fore. This I regret, but we live so far away from other white missionaries that we rarely come in contact with them, and so I have only our own experiences to relate. No one is more aware of the imperfections of the book than I am myself, but if this narrative leads any to take a deeper interest in missionary work I shall feel the book has not been written in vain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Lands That Were Dark, Being a Record of a Year's Missionary Journey, in Africa and Madagascar Nor does the discussion of questions of missionary policy or any account of the details of the work in the various fields fall within the scope of this book. These matters have been dealt with in Reports prepared for the Directors of the Society. Further information with regard to all the fields can be obtained in the Society's Annual Report. Some account of Madagascar and the missionary work there will be also found in a book just published, entitled Madagascar for Christ, being the Joint Report of the Simultaneous Deputations from the London Missionary Society, The Friends' Foreign Mission Association, and the Paris Missionary Society, which have recently returned from Madagascar.* The journey has been one of great fascination. From the point of view of the traveller it has been full of interest. From the point of View of a Secretary of a Missionary Society carrying on work in the lands visited, the out standing impression has been that of the growing Christian Church. In Central Africa that Church is in its infancy, but it is an infancy full of promise. In South Africa and Madagascar the Native Church is nearly a century old. Its foundations have been well and truly laid, and it exhibits all the signs of healthy life and growth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central African Mission: Its Present State and Prospects The special subjects on which our friends will look to us for information are probably the nature and prospects of our directly Mission work - the results and present state of our school work - the share we can take in the crusade against Slavery - and the propriety of remaining at Zanzibar in spite of our many losses. I have tried to deal with these several matters as briefly and clearly as possible, and have subjoined an account of the property belonging to the Mission. Upon the data thus furnished, our friends at home will, I hope, be able to form a tolerably good judg ment as to the results of past work, and the best form in which to proceed for the future.
