Book excerpt: In structure mechanics analysis, finite element methods are now well estab lished and well documented techniques; their advantage lies in a higher flexibility, in particular for: (i) The representation of arbitrary complicated boundaries; (ii) Systematic rules for the developments of stable numerical schemes ap proximating mathematically wellposed problems, with various types of boundary conditions. On the other hand, compared to finite difference methods, this flexibility is paid by: an increased programming complexity; additional storage require ment. The application of finite element methods to fluid mechanics has been lagging behind and is relatively recent for several types of reasons: (i) Historical reasons: the early methods were invented by engineers for the analysis of torsion, flexion deformation of bearns, plates, shells, etc ... (see the historics in Strang and Fix (1972) or Zienckiewicz (1977». (ii) Technical reasons: fluid flow problems present specific difficulties: strong gradients,l of the velocity or temperature for instance, may occur which a finite mesh is unable to properly represent; a remedy lies in the various upwind finite element schemes which recently turned up, and which are reviewed in chapter 2 (yet their effect is just as controversial as in finite differences). Next, waves can propagate (e.g. in ocean dynamics with shallowwaters equations) which will be falsely distorted by a finite non regular mesh, as Kreiss (1979) pointed out. We are concerned in this course with the approximation of incompressible, viscous, Newtonian fluids, i.e. governed by N avier Stokes equations.

This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This monograph addresses fundamental aspects of mathematical modeling and numerical solution methods of electromagnetic problems involving low frequencies, i.e. magnetostatic and eddy current problems which are rarely presented in the applied mathematics literature. In the first part, the authors introduce the mathematical models in a realistic context in view of their use for industrial applications. Several geometric configurations of electric conductors leading to different mathematical models are carefully derived and analyzed, and numerical methods for the solution of the obtained problems are given. Related issues such as convergence of the approximations and error estimates are discussed. The second part of the monograph presents various coupled problems that involve eddy current or magnetostatic problems, in particular magneto-hydrodynamic problems and magnetic shaping problems concerning the melt flow of electrically conducting metals, induction heating processes, inductively coupled plasmas and ferromagnetic screening modeling. The presentation of each model comes with numerical illustration from industrial applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the basic scientific computing methods for the solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) as they occur in engineering problems. Programming codes in Fortran and C are included for each problem. Opening with the definition of the programming environment for the solving of PDE systems, it then addresses in detail the programming of the model problem by the finite element method. Efficiency, compact storage pre-conditioning and mesh adaption are also presented. General elliptic problems and evolution problems are then dealt with. Finally, topics related to other numerical methods, algorithms for parallel computing and multi processor computers are detailed. An integrated software package which illustrates the featured programs of PDEs is available on the Internet via anonymous FTP. The methods presented have applications in numerous fields of engineering including shape optimisation, nuclear safety, heat transfer, acoustics, mechanics of fluids and elasticity, and are also relevant to other areas such as pollution, meteorology, biology, etc.
