Book excerpt: The new critical edition of the works and correspondence of Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) is being prepared and published under the supervision of the Bentham Committee of University College London. In spite of his importance as jurist, philosopher, and social scientist, and leader of the Utilitarian reformers, the only previous edition of his works was a poorly edited and incomplete one brought out within a decade or so of his death. Eight volumes of the new Collected Works, five of correspondence, and three of writings on jurisprudence, appeared between 1968 and 1981, published by the Athlone Press. Further volumes in the series since then are published by Oxford University Press. The overall plan and principles of the edition are set out in the General Preface to The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham, vol. 1, which was the first volume of the Collected Works to be published. An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation, Jeremy Bentham's best-known work, is a classic text in modern philosophy and jurisprudence. First published in 1789, it contains the important statement of the foundations of utilitarian philosophy and a pioneering study of crime and punishment, both of which remain at the heart of contemporary debates in moral and political philosophy, economics, and legal theory. Printed here in full is the definitive edition, edited by the distinguished scholars J. H. Burns and H. L. A. Hart. An introductory essay by Hart, first published in 1982 and a widely acknowledged classic in its own right, is reprinted here. It contains an important analysis of Bentham's principle of utility, theory of action, and an account of the relationship between law and morality. A new introduction by the leading Bentham scholar F. Rosen, specially written for this Clarendon Paperback edition, provides students with a helpful survey of Bentham's main ideas and an extensive bibliographical study of recent critical work on Bentham. Professor Rosen's essay also contains a new analysis of the principle of utility in Bentham's philosophy which is compared with its use in Hume and J. S. Mill.

Book excerpt: In a gorgeously illustrated exploration of the art of Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, Mischief Making disproves any notion that play is frivolous. Deploying mischievous tactics, Yahgulanaas shines a spotlight on serious topics. As he investigates Indigenous and other worldviews, the politics of land, cultural heritage, and global ecology, his distinctive style stretches, twists, and flips the formlines of classic Haida art to create imagery that resonates with the graphic vitality of Asian manga. This engaging and beautiful book delineates the philosophical underpinnings and evolution of the artist’s visual practice, revealing his deep understanding of the seriousness of play.

Book excerpt: She was everything that I wanted. He was everything that I despised.Until she wasn't.Until he wasn't.Killian Cornelii was a walking calamity. He reached inside of me and touched every single inch of my ruined soul, but he didn't just touch it. He caressed, petted, and captivated it. He tailored me to fit into the palm of his hands. The same hands that possess so much cruelty, were the very same that comforted me.I thought I knew him.He thought he knew me.This isn't a fairy tale, or some achingly beautiful story about two soul mates who instantly fall irrevocably in love with each other. This is a story about a love so painful, so rich, that it destroys everything and everyone around it.Including ourselves.Midnight Mayhem is the platform to which Killian performs his tricks on, but the greatest trick wouldn't come from him.It would come from me.Tricksters don't have hearts. They just pretend that they do.Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

Book excerpt: Geoffrey Pearson, who died in 2013, was one of the outstanding social scientists of the post second world war era. His work spanned social work, social theory, social history, criminology and sociology. In particular, his work has had a huge impact upon studies of youth, youth culture and drugs. This collection is made up of contributions from scholars producing empirical work on some of the key areas upon which Geoff Pearson established his reputation. All of the writers in this collection have been profoundly influenced by his scholarship. This collection focuses on urban ethnography, race and ethnicity, youth, and drugs. It includes chapters on: women working in male boxing gyms; understanding the English Defence League; Black male adults as an ignored societal group; drug markets and ethnography; and sex, drugs and kids in care. The result is a cutting edge collection that takes readers into social worlds that are difficult to access, complex, yet utterly normal. Overall this is an exciting and fittingly challenging tribute to one of the UKs most important scholars. This volume will appeal to scholars and students of criminology, sociology, social history and research methodology – in particular ethnography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engines of Mischief explores the day-to-day labor, economic, political, and social climate at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in Manchester, England, between 1817 and 1818. Using new economic theories of the time, parliamentary commissions, and news reports, students will engage with crucial issues of the day, debating factory conditions and child labor; the role of the government in the economy, taxation, workers' unions; and the extension of political rights down the social hierarchy. In the game, by assuming the roles of historical actors from various classes of society, students are faced with choices about how to live and prosper during this period of great technological, economic, and social transformation. Will the working class violently resist new technology in factories, form unions, or join radical political clubs to improve their working conditions and protect their rights? How best will middle-class entrepreneurs run their enterprises; will they provide fair treatment to their workers or simply maximize their profit? How will the aristocrats maintain their power in government and society? Will they support the middle or the working classes?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of modern art, the idea of appropriation, or the conscious manipulation of the recognised world of another artist, has long been accepted as a legitimate strategy in criticism of the tradition of art authorship, challenging the context of viewing contemporary work and the manipulation of omnipresent media images. The world of art itself is fair game to be pillaged or mined in the production of new art, but there is almost no recognised equivalent aesthetic in architecture. Philip Johnson consistently dealt with the concept of appropriation and used it as a design strategy from the very beginning of his illustrious career. A singular taste-maker, Philip Johnson influenced art, architecture and design during the second half of the 20th century. Philip Johnson and His Mischief: Appropriation in Art and Architecture looks at the concept of appropriation and how Johnson’s style was influenced first by his mentor, Mies van der Rohe, and then by post-modern ideas and artists. This title serves to review Johnson’s body of work and show that, far from being a weakness, his use of appropriation was a major part of his innovative success.

Book excerpt: Inheriting an earldom had obviously gone to Nicholas Hollander's head. After he'd left Emily's reputation in tatters years before, how could he expect that she would ever agree to marry him? Yet still he insisted that her rash efforts to find her missing brother had left them no choice but to wed, and straightaway. Nick's youthful defection had ruined Emily Lovenye's prospects. So it was no wonder that the vicar's daughter still wanted nothing to do with him. Unwittingly compromised into a hasty marriage, his courageous Emily was giving him the devil of a time as he struggled to win back her trust and turn their inconvenient union into wedded bliss.
