There is not even a east taken after death (though we have the cast of his skull), inestimably precious as it would be now. We have to some extent, therefore, to idealise our statues of Burns: though not so much so as in the case of that statue of Highland Mary which was erected the other day - a graceful tribute to a charming character, but one of whom we possess no likeness whatever. Still of Burns we have nothing but canvas, and canvas that is not wholly satisfactory, for the engraving (which was, after all, touched from life) always seems to me far more powerful and lifelike than the original painting - to give much more of the vigour of the face and the spirit flashing through the eyes. Skirving's head, again, refined and exquisite as it is, seems to me more delicate and less human than the man as we have him described by such eye-witnesses as Kirkpatrick Sharpe. It could not have been this if it had been an attack from without; it was this, because it was a growth from within. That growth sloughed off many harmful excrescences and restored Christian doctrine to something nearer its original simplicity. And yet through his whole life Schleiermacher rejected ele ments of truth so important as the personal preexist ence and objective atonement of Jesus Christ, while God and immortality were conceived in so pantheistic a fashion that many calm critics have regarded him as an enemy to the Christian faith. To the student of philosophy and theology his positions are curiously interesting; to understand him is to understand the theology of our time. But he cannot be understood without a knowledge of his life and early surround ings; to these I therefore address myself, with the hope that they may help us to interpret his doctrine. A hostile meeting was arranged the combatants met in a field in the Barnet Road; and three shots were exchanged, at the last fire Maginu's bullet grazing the collar of his adversary's coat, and the bullet of the latter striking the ground beside Maginn's boot. Upon this third ineffectual exchange of shots, the account runs, the seconds interfered, and the parties, bowing to each other, left the ground without explanation.
