Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miscellaneous Writings on Slavery ON the lst of January, 1835, there were in the United States, slaves.* This number about equals the population of Holland, and exceeds that of Scotland, of the Danish Dominions, of the Swiss Confederation, and of various Republics in South America. These millions of human beings are held as chattels by a people pro fessing to acknowledge, that all men are created equal, and endowed with certain unalienable rights, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness they are, moreover, kept in ignorance, and compelled to live without God, and to die without hope, by a people professing to reverence the obligations of Christianity. Jay was a lawyer and abolitionist who worked alongside figures such as William Wilberforce and John Quincy Adams to end slavery. In this text, he presents a range of arguments against slavery, including appeals to morality and religion, and demonstrating the economic and political costs of the practice. The book is a powerful and emotional work that captures the spirit of the anti-slavery movement in the United States. The thing is seen to be an undeniable reality - no mere invention of the novelist. From time to time, the spectacle of an auction-stand on which one man is selling another, flashes back upon the mind. For three years, I have been haunted by recollections of that saddening scene, and taken a gradually deepening interest in American Slavery -its present condition, its mysterious future. Having already referred to the subject, I should not again have intruded on public notice, but for the recent exciting discussions concerning Slavery, the protracted struggle in Kansas, and the probability of further contests between Slavery and Freedom, consequent on the organisation of new States in the southern section of the Union. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Slavery in New Jersey An accurate and thorough knowledge of slavery as it developed in the United States can best be gained by a comparative study of the institution as it has existed in the various States. Preparatory to such a study, the experience of each of these commonwealths needs to be investigated separately. This has been done in several instances very satisfactorily. The writer has aimed to follow lines of investigation already opened, and has pursued the history of slavery in New Jersey, his native State. New Jersey history is conveniently studied in three periods: the period of the Proprietary Colony, 1664-1702; the period of the Province of the Crown, 1702-1776; and the period of the State. These divisions have not been adopted in the plan of this monograph, an arrangement by subject appearing more desirable; but it is hoped that they have been sufficiently recognized throughout the paper. In general, in the Proprietary Colony we find the early beginnings of slavery; in the royal Colony, a steady increase in the number of slaves, and special forms of trial and punishment for slaves prescribed in the criminal law. This was also the period of a strong abolition movement among the Friends, ending in 1776 with the denial by Friends of the right of membership in their Society to slaveholders. In the State the anti-slavery movement, largely under the leadership of the abolition societies, grew to greater and greater strength. Its influence showed itself in practical ways in the support given to negroes before the courts, in the extinction of the slave trade, and in the passage of the gradual abolition law of 1804. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essay on Slavery; As Connected With the Moral and Providential Government of God; And as an Element of Church Organization: With Miscellaneous Reflections on the Subject of Slavery In this age of improvement, and in a world abounding with great, greater and greatest men, we feel no small degree of embarrassment at the thought of passing the ordeal of public scrutiny in the character of an author. Such an idea, in the commencement of those sections which form the first part of this work, was not entertained, no, not even dreamed of, either in our sleeping or waking hours. Circumstances, however, have somewhat strangely conspired to lead matters on to this end, and which are as follows: - Since the days of our youth we have been an unworthy member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In the recent agitation of the abolition question, (which is one with which we sympathize, when restricted to proper limits, ) the leaders of that movement, in its ultra form, together with those who follow in the wake, have seemed to feel and act as if they thought they had a special mission from God to denounce - not only as thieves and robbers, but as the synagogue of Satan, and many other like grave charges - those churches, and the members of those churches which, as an evil, tolerate the relation as in agreement With the Scriptures. Having been thus personally, repeatedly assailed, both from the pulpit and the press, as also the Church with which we stand connected, in the acceptance of challenges loudly and frequently given, we volunteered the defence of our Church against the charge of pro-slaveryism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Experience of a Slave in South Carolina IN aiming to arrest the attention of the reader, ere he proceeds to the unvarnished, but ower true tale of John Andrew Jackson, the escaped Carolinian slave, it might be fairly said that truth was stranger than fiction, and that the experience of slavery produces a full exhibition of all that is vile and devilish in human nature. Mrs. Stowe, as a virtuous woman, dared only allude to some of the hellish works of slavery - it was too foul to sully her pen; but the time is come when iniquity should no longer be hid: and that evil which Wilberforce and Clarkson exposed, and of which Wesley said it was the sum of all human villanies, must now be laid bare in all its hellish atrocities. The half has not yet been told; but appalling as are the statements made, yet when the fiercest organized effort to extend the monster evil of N orth-american slavery is being made, every patriot is called on to sympathize over the woes and sufferings of human kind, and plead for freedom and liberty.
