Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when the world’s worst shrew meets the world’s most formidable warrior? Answer: Mirrored Sword, a comedy as black as the Plague, as turbulent as the Wars of the Roses. She is an aspiring painter and devoted Yorkist. He is the legendary but ageing Beast of Ferrybridge – a Lancastrian stalwart! Rebellion in Lincolnshire throws them together, the Yorkist king keeps them together, and thus they must work out their destinies and England’s, in an epic story that combines laughter and tears, romance and adventure, history and make-believe, high art and vulgar entertainment: a medieval banquet, loaded with surprises, colourful characters and poetic justice. Part One, The Dance, is a journey from Lincolnshire to London, where he goes in search of a fool brother, and she goes in quest of a royal romance, the story careering through a series of revealing encounters, climaxing in treachery and mayhem at Baynard Castle, the king’s London home. Part Two, The Tour, is their return journey from London to Lincolnshire, as companions and fellow travellers of the king, when their previous encounters are even more revealing in reverse order, ending in a rising tide of bloodshed and revenge, malice and pure evil, hope and desperate self-belief, deep in the fens. The narrative represents the viewpoints of eight different characters in Part One, but Part Two concentrates on the viewpoints of just two, the hero and heroine, as they struggle to shake off, manipulate, dominate, understand and maybe accept each other. Themes include conflicting loyalties and challenging relationships associated with lovers, friends, family, pets, and political allies. Chapters are presented as 31 calendar dates in the year 1470. Front matter includes a decorative map of medieval England, showing the towns visited. Readers can track different points of view by means of a chart, bolded names heading different sections, and headers on alternate pages.

Book excerpt: Throughout his career, Eduardo Galeano has turned our understanding of history and reality on its head. Isabelle Allende said his works "invade the reader's mind, to persuade him or her to surrender to the charm of his writing and power of his idealism." Mirrors, Galeano's most ambitious project since Memory of Fire, is an unofficial history of the world seen through history's unseen, unheard, and forgotten. As Galeano notes: "Official history has it that Vasco Núde Balboa was the first man to see, from a summit in Panama, the two oceans at once. Were the people who lived there blind??" Recalling the lives of artists, writers, gods, and visionaries, from the Garden of Eden to twenty-first-century New York, of the black slaves who built the White House and the women erased by men's fears, and told in hundreds of kaleidoscopic vignettes, Mirrors is a magic mosaic of our humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lovers of the Occult and the unusual will love this book. It gives a deep insight into the ancient Japanese tradition of magic mirrors and their connection to the Sun Goddess. In Japan mirrors had a peculiar place in society and spirituality. Mirrors were often decorated and surrounded with flowers like we see icons from the West decorated, and some of them are told to have magical properties. This book digs into the special properties. It seems that due to an old technique some Japanese mirrors can present patterns or images, not to the onlooker but at the mirror's reflection in the room, if the light source is just right.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why devote a Companion to the "mirrors for princes", whose very existence is debated? These texts offer key insights into political thoughts of the past. Their ambiguous, problematic status further enhances their interest. And although recent research has fundamentally challenged established views of these texts, until now there has been no critical introduction to the genre. This volume therefore fills this important gap, while promoting a global historical perspective of different “mirrors for princes” traditions from antiquity to humanism, via Byzantium, Persia, Islam, and the medieval West. This Companion also proposes new avenues of reflection on the anchoring of these texts in their historical realities. Contributors are Makram Abbès, Denise Aigle, Olivier Biaggini, Hugo Bizzarri, Charles F. Briggs, Sylvène Edouard, Jean-Philippe Genet, John R. Lenz, Louise Marlow, Cary J. Nederman, Corinne Peneau, Stéphane Péquignot, Noëlle-Laetitia Perret, Günter Prinzing, Volker Reinhardt, Hans-Joachim Schmidt, Tom Stevenson, Karl Ubl, and Steven J. Williams.

Book excerpt: In case there's anyone out there that has been reading the things I've been writing on my blogs, probably noticed that one of my "projects" for 2014, 2015 (and now 2016) was to read through all of Shakespeare's Works. Unfortunately, in 2014 I wasn't able to start this project (I read some Shakespeare stuff, but no plays). 2015 was where things really started shapping up Shakespeare-wise. But things were looking even better for 2016. On top of that, 2016 commemorated 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare and this special anniversary year was a truly unique opportunity to complete my quest of reading the rest of his entire body of work.

Book excerpt: As powerful magic comes creeping back, dangerous days are dawning… Criminal Investigation Division inspectors Janus Mikani and Celeste Ritsuko were lucky to make it out of their last mission alive. Since then, strange troubles have plagued the city of steam and shadows, apparently as a result of magic released during the CID inspectors’ desperate interruption of an ancient ritual. The fabric of the world has been unsettled, and the Council has assigned Mikani and Ritsuko to investigate. They soon discover that matters are worse than they imagined. Machines have developed minds of their own, cragger pirates are raiding the seas with relentless aggression, and mad elementals are running amok. As the chaos builds to a crescendo, Mikani and Ritsuko must fight a war on two fronts—and this time, they may not be able to turn the deadly tide…

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DaVaun Sanders has resided in Phoenix, Arizona since 2002, where the local spoken word community fostered his passion to pursue writing novels and screenplays. “The Seedbearing Prince” began as a dream vivid enough to play like a movie trailer. Deciding to write the debut novel took some time, as it wasn't part of "The Plan," but the housing market collapse forced DaVaun's small design firm under in 2008. He eventually decided to step away from architecture and plunge into writing full-time, and is loving every minute as an indy publisher. The Seedbearing Prince: Part I has reached as high as #1 on Amazon’s genre lists for Science Fiction and Epic Fantasy and is a perennial favorite in the top 100 downloads. DaVaun’s screenplay “Vault of Souls,” won the Grand Prize in Phoenix Comicon’s 2014 Short Script Competition. DaVaun is currently hard at work editing Dayn Ro’Halan’s latest adventure, “The Course of Blades,” the third of six books in the World Breach series.
