Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legal Passing offers a nuanced look at how the lives of undocumented Mexicans in the US are constantly shaped by federal, state, and local immigration laws. Angela S. García compares restrictive and accommodating immigration measures in various cities and states to show that place-based inclusion and exclusion unfold in seemingly contradictory ways. Instead of fleeing restrictive localities, undocumented Mexicans react by presenting themselves as “legal,” masking the stigma of illegality to avoid local police and federal immigration enforcement. Restrictive laws coerce assimilation, because as legal passing becomes habitual and embodied, immigrants distance themselves from their ethnic and cultural identities. In accommodating destinations, undocumented Mexicans experience a localized sense of stability and membership that is simultaneously undercut by the threat of federal immigration enforcement and complex street-level tensions with local police. Combining social theory on immigration and race as well as place and law, Legal Passing uncovers the everyday failures and long-term human consequences of contemporary immigration laws in the US.

Book excerpt: Since age ten, Dave "Miracle Boy" Mirra has been defying gravity and changing people's minds about what can and can't be done on a bike. But in 1993 he lived up to his nickname in ways that his fans could never have anticipated. Six months after he was injured by a drunk driver and told by his doctors that he would never ride again, he was back on his bike, competing in -- and winning -- high-profile BMX events. Since then he has gone on to win more X Games medals than any other competitor --in any event -– and has inspired a devoted following always hungry for a new miracle. Mirra Images captures all of Dave's most daring and explosive tricks -- carving flairs, wallride-to-tailwhips, and his record-setting nineteen-foot air -- in stunning color. In addition, Dave delves into his past and his personal photo album to shed light on his rise to the top of the action sports world and reveal a side of himself that has never before been seen. This action-packed photo-autobiography is the first ever look into the life, times, tricks, and bikes of the biggest of all BMX superstars.

Book excerpt: "For some, grocery shopping is an activity woven seamlessly into daily life. They make lists of foods they enjoy preparing and eating throughout the week, stopping by a market where we seek out the best deals and freshest foods among the broad range of items on display. However, access to this abundance is wildly unequal. Many Americans make long commutes to seek out affordable food, visiting corner stores for dry goods and distant markets for fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats. Poor people, and especially people of color, have significantly less access to the affordable bounty of large grocery stores. The Problems with Feeding Cities charts the massive infrastructures and systems that make it possible to consistently buy a wide range of groceries in one place for an affordable price and the communities that have been left behind in this food revolution. Tracing the growth of technologies including bar codes and storage facilities, networks such as distribution chains and transit systems, and social organizations including food banks and farmers markets, this book illuminates the long social history of today's urban food deserts. The unequal distribution of food and resources is closely linked to the rise and explosive growth of American cities, and the infrastructures that accompanied them affect us still"--

Book excerpt: Enjoy this FREE dystopian, genetic engineering series by bestselling science-fantasy author L. S. O'Dea. Every year after harvest the weakest are removed from the encampment. None of them are ever seen or heard from again. Trinity’s only hope of escape lies in the forest. She’s not afraid of the creatures that live there. There’s nothing bigger than foxes in those woods, except this time something is different. This time she’s hunted from land and sea by predators that should only exist in legends. Surrounded by three enemies. Surrender is her only option, but which one should she choose? A captivating dystopian read filled with human-animal hybrids and creatures you’ve never even imagined. Fans of Daniel Young, Michael Anderle, and Anna Hackett will love this free science-fantasy, genetic engineering story. Author Interview Q. – Why should someone read the Lake of Sins series? If you're looking for your typical gentic engineering, post-apocalyptic, survival thriller then you should look somewhere else. This story has been described as a one-of-a-kind world created in a unique dystopian society. The characters in the series are human-animal hybrids—genetic mutations or evil experiments, is yet to be revealed. It's an entire new species of characters who don't fit in the typical genre categories of vampire, werewolf, witch, fairies or even angels and demons. The world of the Lake of Sins is segregated by class with the humans ruling supreme. In book one, Escape, Trinity unwittingly sets off a collision between the classes when she flees into the forest to find and free her friend only to discover the horrible fate of her kind. The books are fast paced with adventure and mutated creatures around every corner. There are legends that are truth and societal truths that are well guarded lies. All-in-all, it's a unique and exciting read and you should give it a try. I think you'll love it. The Chimera Chronicles series also takes place in the world of the Lake of Sins. These stories are prequels, explaining how some of the characters, who you meet in the Lake of Sins series, became monsters. Q. – Who should read the Lake of Sins series? Although there's a strong, female lead in Lake of Sins, the audience for both series is broad. I have fans (male and female) aged ten through eighty. Anyone who likes gory thrillers that are dark, a little disturbing and packed with action will enjoy these books. However, a word of caution is in order. These books are not for the squeamish. Some scenes are bloody and violent almost falling into the horror genre, but the interactions between the characters are funny, poignant and loving (and a love triangle develops as the stories progress). Still, I wouldn't recommend these books to anyone under thirteen without the parents reading the books first.

Throughout cinematic history, gushing accounts have cast the likes of DeMille, Hitchcock, Fellini, and Spielberg as sorcerers, rather than tradesmen. Now confounding these lofty perceptions, acclaimed veteran director Christopher Lukas examines the craft and art of directing as a teachable, learnable profession.
