Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soft Living Architecture explores the invention of new architectures based on living processes. It crafts a unique intersection between two fast-developing disciplines: biomimicry and biodesign in architecture, and bioinformatics and natural computing in the natural sciences. This is the first book to examine both the theory and methodology of architecture and design working directly with the natural world. It explores a range of approaches from the use of life-like systems in building design to the employment of actual growing and living cell and tissue cultures as architectural materials - creating architecture that can change, learn and grow with us. The use of 'living architecture' is cutting-edge and speculative, yet it is also inspiring a growing number of designers worldwide to adopt alternative perspectives on sustainability and environmental design. The book examines the ethical and theoretical issues arising alongside case-studies of experimental practice, to explore what we mean by 'natural' in the Anthropocene, and raise deep questions about the nature of design and the design of nature. This provocative and at times controversial book shows why it will become ever more necessary to embrace living processes in architecture if we are to thrive in a sustainable future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Their love could save a continent—or doom it to destruction. In the year 2068, Europe stands on the brink of another devastating conflict. Amidst the delicate peace, Lady Arinna Grey, known as the Lady Grey, and the enigmatic Earl of Kesmere, Derrick Eldridge, find their love tested by duty and betrayal. Their secret romance, once a source of strength, now faces scrutiny and danger. Arinna and Derrick must navigate treacherous political landscapes and personal betrayals. Adding to the complexity is the return of old rivals and new enemies, including Derrick’s former fiancée, Danielle, and the shadowy forces that threaten Europe's fragile peace. For the Guard, keeping Europe safe has never been more difficult. The hunt for information on the FLF endangers lives, including one very dear to Arinna Prescot, the unsanctioned leader of Europe’s military. As Derrick volunteers for a risky mission to infiltrate the enemy, he leaves Arinna to confront the ministers of MOTHER, who secretly manipulate Europe’s government and seek to remove her from power. Refusing to step aside, Arinna widens the rift between Europe’s military and MOTHER, leaving the Guard scrambling to find enough soldiers to protect the border. Control of Europe hinges on internal plots, but Europe’s powerful are not hatching the only conspiracies. The battlefield is quiet, but the fighting has not ceased. And its outcome will determine who rules Europe. Set against a backdrop of regency elegance and futuristic intrigue, "Battle for Europe" weaves a tale of romance, suspense, and the enduring power of love in the face of adversity. As Arinna and Derrick fight for their love and the future of Europe, they must confront their pasts and make choices that will change the course of history. Continue the military dystopian series Friends of my Enemy with book 2, The Battle for Europe. Terrorism and new conflict bubble to the surface as political maneuverings threaten the stability of what might be the last refuge from an apocalyptic World War III that ravaged the continents. Set in Europe, this near-future fiction series unfolds through the intersecting lives of a small handful of people and explores adult themes, both dark and hopeful, of friendship, romance, family, lust, and power. Because not all influence is good, and not all decisions can be made in time.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of the Fifth Scientific Meeting of the Spanish Astronomical Society (Sociedad Espanola de Astronomfa, SEA). The meeting was held at the Universidad de Castilla La Mancha in Toledo, from September 9 to 13, 2002. The event brought together 219 participants who pre sented their latest results in many different subjects. In comparison with the previous scientific meetings of the Society, the numbers of oral talks and poster contributions (122 and 64, respectively) are rapidly increasing, confirming that the SEA conferences are becoming a point of reference to assess the interests and achievements of astrophysical research in Spain. During the meeting, the SEA made public the granting of the Prize to the Best Spanish Ph. D. Thesis in As tronomy and Astrophysics for the period 2000-2001 ex aequo to Dr. A. Zurita and Dr. E. Villaver. This is the second time that the SEA is awarding this prize, which aim is to encourage young spanish astrophysicists to pursue a high level scientific career. The Society is indebted to the Universidad de Castilla La Mancha, and, in particular, to the San Pedro Martir staff, for its hospitality. It is also indebted to the Local Organizing Committee for its dedication and the good atmosphere that prevailed at any moment, and to the Scientific Organizing Committee for its excel lent work.

Book excerpt: El Internacional Tapas Bar & Restaurant was conceived as an artistic project carried out between 1984 and 1986 by artist Antoni Miralda (born 1942) and chef Montse Guillén (born 1946) in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City. One of the first restaurants to introduce Spanish tapas in the United States, El Internacional quickly became a cultural icon and a creative hub of New York's downtown in the 1980s. It combined the social ritual of eating with installation and performance art, blurring the boundaries between food, art, design, architecture and mass media. Miralda's El Internacional (1984-1986) documents the restaurant's history through the memories of the people who contributed to it. Richly illustrated and featuring some of El Internacional's most successful recipes, this volume tells the story of a crucial piece of urban history from a city not always able to protect its landmarks.
