Book excerpt: It was a miracle worthy of the season. When Captain Leonard La Rue spied from his twelve-man merchant ship, the Meredith Victory, the throng of Korean refugees on the docks of a city in flames, he didn't hesitate to do what others would consider impossible. In December of 1950, La Rue and his skeleton crew rescued fourteen thousand Korean refugees from the hands of the rapidly-approaching Chinese army in the city of Hungnam. Through the night and next day, a seemingly endless succession of refugees boarded the Meredith, their will to live and strong spirit steeling them against the bitter cold and incredibly crowded conditions. Standing shoulder to shoulder for three days the refugees and crew stoically endured as La Rue steered the ship through sea battle, a thirty-mile web of sea mines, and enemy shelling. "Ship of Miracles" is the incredible story of what has been called "the greatest rescue operation by a single ship in the history of mankind." Against all odds, the little merchant vessel transported its precious cargo to the island of Koje-Do on Christmas Eve completely unharmed, all fourteen thousand refugees alive and well, including an additional five new lives begun on this incredible journey. As the fiftieth anniversary of this miraculous rescue approaches, "Ship of Miracles" is as touching today as it was then; a tale you'll hold close to your heart, and return to time and again. While the United States Navy prepares to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the perilous evacuation at Hungnam and honor the Meredith Victory's miraculous feat, read this never-before-told account from the crew themselves, as they relate the incredible and unbelievable details of their three-day journey from fear to freedom.

Book excerpt: "This is a book about the amazing discovery of a wooden boat that did survive, despite the contrary logic and evidence. For almost 2,000 years in the freshwater of the Sea of Galilee, this boat lasted against all odds. The one thing that is most important in this whole story is the fact that this boat connects modern Christians with their Lord and Savior in a completely new way. This discovery repaints the sections of the gospels that take place around the Sea of Galilee in a light previously unseen. Despite paintings of Jesus walking on water and calming the storm, no one knew what the disciples' boat would have looked like. Now, for the first time, we do." [Prologue].

Book excerpt: Discover the miracle you’ve been looking for through an exploration of nine miracles of Jesus, each filled with meaning, insight, and discovery for all who desperately need a miracle of their own. Healing the blind. Walking on water. Calming the storm. Feeding thousands with a few loaves and fish. Every miracle Jesus performed was for a purpose. There was provision for that specific moment in time. But what if each miracle was also embedded with the promise of future provision…for you? In Find Your Miracle, New York Times best-selling authors Kerry and Chris Shook take a fresh look at nine of Jesus’s most incredible times of healing and supernatural intervention. The Shooks unpack these moments in modern language to usher you into the pain, desperation, breakthrough, and miracle of each encounter. Plus they reveal a “miracle map” that connects that moment long ago to our needs today for revelation, transformation, and restoration. Weaving together the biblical narrative with contemporary real-life application, Kerry and Chris Shook arrange these New Testament miracles under four overarching descriptions of Jesus the Miracle Worker: the Healer, the Provider, the Storm Chaser, and the Life Giver. Rather than running from our overwhelming situations, the Shooks encourage us to remain steady, fully trusting that Jesus stands ready to guide us to the miracle we most need, and possibly least expect.

Book excerpt: In this volume, I have tried to offer an insight into New York City as Sri Chinmoy might have found it in 1964, and also the haven that he discovered in Woodstock. In addition, I have included transcripts of some evening gatherings at Sri Chinmoys home. They capture the delightful and unstructured ebb and flow of conversation, informal questions, personal guidance, reflections, and humorous asides. These were the moments when time itself seemed to stretch endlessly, punctuated only by the striking of a wall clock, the barking of Sri Chinmoys little dog or the mimicking calls of his mynah bird.

Book excerpt: On September 17, 1940, the SS City of Benares was sailing in the North Atlantic with more than four hundred people on board, including ninety children on their way to Canada to escape the blitz. They were considered lucky - leaving WWII behind and heading for peace, quiet and security...At a little after ten o'clock that night, a German submarine torpedoed the Benares. The ship sank in half an hour, in a gale that sent several of her lifeboats pitching to the cold sea. The passengers were more than six hundred miles from land, three hundred miles from the nearest rescue vessel; none of them had a reasonable hope of survival. But in the wake of tragedy and horror, the City of Benares would also prove herself a mother of miracles. Exceptional feats of courage and endurance took shape in the hours and days that followed the attack, the children in particular exhibiting what one naval officer later called 'courage beyond praise'. Based on firsthand accounts from the child survivors and other passengers, including the author's great-uncle, "Miracles on the Water" is a vivid retelling of one of the greatest hidden wartime dramas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of Mark has long been regarded as The Gospel of Action. It contains more miracles and supernatural phenomena than Matthew, Luke, or John. In fact, a third of Mark's Gospel is centered on the miraculous deeds of Jesus. Mark is clearly more concerned with what Jesus did than with what He said. From the vision that Jesus experienced at His baptism to the supernatural events surrounding the crucifixion and resurrection, Dr. Spell will take the reader on a journey of exploration through the pages of Mark's Gospel. The miracles of Jesus are as profoundly important for us today as they were for those who experienced them. This study will help to guide readers in finding insights for their own lives.
