Book excerpt: This reference book is primarily a procedural work which examines the many forms, customs, and practices which have been developed and established for the House of Commons since Confederation in 1867. It provides a distinctive Canadian perspective in describing procedure in the House up to the end of the first session of the 36th Parliament in Sept. 1999. Book Synopsis The Federal Court of Canada by : Ian Bushnell
Download or read book The Federal Court of Canada written by Ian Bushnell and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1997-12-15 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Court of Canada, which existed from 1875 to 1971 under the name Exchequer Court of Canada, occupies a special place in the court structure of Canada. It was founded principally to adjudicate legal disputes in which the Canadian government was involved; since its change of name in 1971 it has become primarily an administrative appeal court dealing with the review of decisions made by federal administrative tribunals in addition to its existing jurisdictions, admiralty, intellectual property, tax, and other areas. As a federal court within the nation, its very existence has provoked discussion and debate as the various provincial court systems claim a position of primacy within our society for the adjudication of legal disputes. Central to this history of the Court is an examination of the judges who have sat on its bench. Bushnell investigates who the judges have been and examines their work, with particular focus on the judges' views of the proper approach to decision-making. His study contains a wealth of information, much of which may not be widely known in the profession. As such, The Federal Court of Canada constitutes a rich source both for those with a legal background and for those with an interest in the working and history of legal institutions.
Book Synopsis Canadian Bilingual Districts by : Daniel Bourgeois
Download or read book Canadian Bilingual Districts written by Daniel Bourgeois and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1969 the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism recommended bilingual districts as part of its federal language policy. Daniel Bourgeois traces the complex path that led to the 1976 demise, following pressure from the Treasury Board Secretariat, of the plan to create bilingual districts. Bourgeois argues for the reconsideration of this previously discarded "corner-stone" of federal language policy, providing a nuanced analysis of social identity, sociolinguistic policies, nationalism, and minority rights and services. Canadian Bilingual Districts also considers the Royal Commission's approach in the context of contemporary developments"--Résumé de l'éditeur
Download or read book Doctors in Denial written by Joel Lexchin and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctors in Denial examines the relationship between the Canadian medical profession and the pharmaceutical industry, and explains how doctors have become dependents of the drug companies instead of champions of patients' health. Big Pharma plays a role in every aspect of doctors' work. These giant, wealthy multinationals influence how medical students are trained and receive information, how research is done in hospitals and universities, what is published in leading medical journals, what drugs are approved, and what patients expect when they go into their doctors' offices. But almost all doctors deny the influence and control the drug companies exert. In this book Dr. Lexchin urges the medical profession to make the changes needed to give priority to protecting and promoting patients' health and benefitting society, rather than enabling Big Pharma to dominate health care while raking in billions in profits from citizens and governments.

Book Synopsis Contested Constitutionalism by : James B. Kelly
Download or read book Contested Constitutionalism written by James B. Kelly and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982 was accompanied by much fanfare and public debate. This book does not celebrate the Charter; rather it offers a critique by distinguished scholars of law and political science of its effect on democracy, judicial power, and the place of Quebec and Aboriginal peoples twenty-five years later. By employing diverse methodological approaches, contributors shift the focus of debate from the Charter’s appropriateness to its impact – for better or worse – on political institutions, public policy, and conceptions of citizenship in the Canadian federation.
Book Synopsis New Era of Global Competition by : Daniel Drache
Download or read book New Era of Global Competition written by Daniel Drache and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1991 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing globalization of production and the conservative agenda for market-led growth are dramatically affecting the life of the average Canadian and the choices made by social and economic policy makers. As Daniel Drache, Meric Gertler, and the contributing authors show, the worldwide reorganization of markets poses new challenges for domestic industry while continental trade initiatives threaten the livelihood of Canadian workers and the stability of communities across all regions of the country. Environmental quality is similarly at risk from development strategies driven more by possibilities of short-term gain from export sales than by attempts to promote long-term sustainability.
