Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an intersectional analysis of secondary and tertiary educational pathways of ethnic Hungarians, Romanians and Slovaks in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Serbia. After a detailed overview of the legal and institutional context of national minority education in Serbia, the book presents qualitative and quantitative research results to illuminate the often invisible linguistic and cultural barriers that national minority high school graduates, university students and faculty may encounter. The author also focuses on the position of national minority women in Serbian higher education and academia, shedding light on the very gendered nature of the ‘glass ceiling’ that often holds members of national minority communities back from career building. This book will be of interest to policymakers seeking nuanced interpretations of multifocal inequalities, as well as academics in fields such as gender studies, migration studies, minority languages and communities, and the sociology of education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The autonomous province of Vojvodina in Serbia is little-known in the English-speaking world, even though it is a territory of high significance for the development of Serbian national identity. Vojvodina's multi-ethnic composition and historical experience has also encouraged the formation of a distinct regional identity. This book analyses the evolution of Vojvodina's identity over time and the unique pattern of ethnic relations in the province. Although approximately 25 ethnic communities live in Vojvodina, it is by no means a divided society. Intercultural cohabitation has been a living reality in the province for centuries and this largely accounts for the lack of ethnic conflict. Vassilis Petsinis explores Vojvodina's intercultural society and shows how this has facilitated the introduction of flexible and regionalized legal models for the management of ethnic relations in Serbia since the 2000s. He also discusses recent developments in the region, most notably the arrival of refugees from Syria and Iraq, and measures the impact that these changes have had on social stability and inter-group relations in the province.

Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2012 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, , language: English, abstract: The Republic of Kosova as the youngest country in the world, established after many years of its existence, with its ancient Illyrian origin, includes minorities as well. Although its current territory is small, the diversity of its population is great. It consists of Turks, Gorani, Ashkali, Serbs, Egyptians, Croats, etc.., with the Serb minority being the largest one. This population has settled in Kosova at different period of times, mainly and mostly after the withdrawal of the Ottoman Empire, following the declaration of the independence of Albania in 1912, then in the following years 1913, 1914 and onwards, while on the basis of the international treaties, when the Albanian lands, in this case Kosova, were annexed. These long periods of settling of the Albanian lands with Serbs had changed the demographic picture of Kosova. Nowadays, with the declaration of independence of Kosova in 2008, the Serb minority have been granted all of the maximum rights that a minority in the world might have. Their rights are as large as to some extent the majority population, the Albanians, let alone other minorities which are almost same in the number as Serbs are, feel discriminated. Kosova institutions have opened their doors and reserved seats in every institutional aspect. However, this is not satisfying the Serb minority, where the desire of being the first is making them blind, their involvement within the institutions is very much a formal one, as to get double benefits, whereas their contribution to the institutions of the Republic of Kosova is very minimal. The reason for choosing this subject for study is the one that, despite the fact that Serb minority has been given all the opportunities for a better life in Kosova, they still lack the willingness to contribute as any other minority in the world. Every country in the world in itself has got minorities, Kosova has minorities as well and the fact that Serbs may also be a minority in a country is not properly understood by them. In fact, the entire world understands this situation, but their unfair attitude towards the Republic of Kosova, behaving like its masters, thinking that one should always serve them, by thanking them day and night, is immensely damaging Kosova. Everyone knows and we know it as well that the Serb minority is exaggeratedly spoiled and that the Serbian politics is very active in Europe, while the Serb minority in Kosova is only a tool used by them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serbia Matters presents policy essays on Serbia's post-Milosevic era written by internationally recognised authors, policymakers, academics and political analysts actively engaged in the Balkans discourse. Since 2000 Serbia has moved from a decade of wars and delayed transition towards European integration. The book assesses the country's present state of affairs, recent achievements and future challenges. It also offers pertinent analyses and compelling arguments as to why Serbia's accession to the European Union matters as much for Belgrade as it does for the whole Western Balkans. This book is written with the aim to persuade both Serbia's leaders and citizens and those Member States of the European Union who are hit by 'enlargement fatigue' that the country ought to have its rightful place in the EU and that there is no alternative to the reform process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Azan on the Moon is an in-depth anthropological study of people's lives along the Pamir Highway in eastern Tajikistan. Constructed in the 1930s in rugged high-altitude terrain, the road fundamentally altered the material and social fabric of this former Soviet outpost on the border with Afghanistan and China. The highway initially brought sentiments of disconnection and hardship, followed by Soviet modernization and development, and ultimately a sense of distinction from bordering countries and urban centers that continues to this day. Based on extensive fieldwork and through an analysis of construction, mobility, technology, media, development, Islam, and the state, Till Mostowlansky shows how ideas of modernity are both challenged and reinforced in contemporary Tajikistan. In the wake of China's rise in Central Asia, people along the Pamir Highway strive to reconcile a modern future with a modern past. Weaving together the road, a population, and a region, Azan on the Moon presents a rich ethnography of global connections
