Book Synopsis Minority Languages and Group Identity by : John Edwards
Download or read book Minority Languages and Group Identity written by John Edwards and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central concern in this book is the relationship between language and group identity, a relationship that is thrown into greatest relief in minority settings. Since much of the current interest in minority languages revolves around issues of identity politics, language rights and the plight of endangered languages, one aim of the book is to summarise and analyse these and other pivotal themes. Furthermore, since the uniqueness of every language-contact situation does not rest upon unique elements or features but, rather, upon the particular weightings and combinations of features that recur across settings the second aim here is to provide a general descriptive framework within which a wide range of contact settings may be more easily understood. The book thus begins with a discussion of such matters as language decline, maintenance and revival, the dynamics of minority languages, and the ecology of language. It then offers a typological framework that draws and expands upon previous categorising efforts. Finally, the book presents four case studies that are both intrinsically interesting and more importantly provide specific illustrations of the generalities discussed earlier."

Book Synopsis Conflict and Compromise in Multilingual Societies by : Kenneth Douglas McRae
Download or read book Conflict and Compromise in Multilingual Societies written by Kenneth Douglas McRae and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the French Revolution, Switzerland developed from a country in which German dominated linguistically into a confederation of four officially recognised language groups -- German, French, Italian, Romansh -- concentrated in different geographical areas and marked by distinctive cultures and lifestyles. Following a historical overview of this development and the social and political institutionalisation of the linguistic cleavages, McRae's study examines key elements in the functioning of modern Swiss society; political parties, federal and cantonal institutions, the media, educational and cultural policies, the relation between the linguistic cleavages and class and religion, the attitudes and behaviour of the four language groups to one another. It concludes by reviewing the various explanations advanced to explain the relative social and political stability of Switzerland.

Download or read book Diglossia written by Mauro Fernández and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the notion of 'diglossia' occupies a prominent place in sociolinguistic research. Since the 1960s, when the dominant sense of 'diglossia' was the complementary sociofunctional distribution of two varieties of the same language, the term has been applied -- often controversially -- to a growing number of diverse sociolinguistic situations. As a consequence of this extension of the scope of the concept, in combination with an increasing interest in the relationship between the role of language and the social structure, the number of publications in this field has risen exponentially over the last decades. However, despite the growing importance of the notion, up till now there was no adequate bibliography devoted to diglossia, while coverage in other bibliographies does not do justice to the number of works actually published in this area. This first comprehensive bibliography of the subject includes almost 3,000 entries; although the time span covered is 1960-1990, the book includes several dozens of entries from before 1960 and also a substantial number of very recent publications from the period 1990-1992. The selection of items has not been restricted to a specific definition of diglossia: all available publications in which the term (or one of its offsprings) appears have been included; moreover, when considered appropriate, some material relevant to the subject has been added even though the term is not explicitly used. The usefulness of the bibliography has been enhanced significantly by six indexes: (1) index of languages, (2) diglossia in literature, (3) historically oriented works, (4) pedagogically oriented works, (5) theoretical works, and (6) theses and dissertations.

Book Synopsis Le Règlement Pacifique Des Différends Internationaux en Europe by : Daniel Bardonnet
Download or read book Le Règlement Pacifique Des Différends Internationaux en Europe written by Daniel Bardonnet and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1991 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any dreams that Europe had at last become too mature a society of states for the continent to be afficted by bloody international disputes have been shattered in recent months. This unique book examines both the sources of disputes -- the delimination of boundaries, ethnic differences, human rights violations, environmental damage, drug control, etc. -- and the most appropriate methods for settling them. The examination is thorough and detailed, and the result is a substantial work, authored by leading authorities, many of whom have played major roles in devising and operating dispute settlement procedures. This bilingual (English and French) volume is destined to become an important "vade-mecum" for diplomats and officials, and a reference work of permanent significance for students, academics and all those interested in international law and relations.
