Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book on Minor Surgery During the last decade while surgery has shared in the great advance made by all the sciences, one of its branches, minor surgery, has far outstripped the others. This has been caused by a great number of factors. The industrial clinic, the workers compensation insurance, the use of local anesthesia, and the realization of the far-reaching results and complications of poorly and improperly treated minor injuries have been responsible for the prodigious strides of this branch. The disfiguring scars of burns, the stiff fingers, due to neglected tendon sheath infections, and other such conditions so important to the indi vidual both socially and economically have left their indelible imprint upon all surgeons, stimulating them to a keener interest in this formerly unimportant division of surgery. To give detailed description of the widely different methods of treating the same surgical condition would fill many volumes, and would fall far beyond the scope of this book. In the chapters which follow an attempt has been made to give those surgical procedures which are simple and efficient. In their selection it has always been borne in mind that while complicated treatments may yield better results in the hands of their originators, complete failure has often met the, attempts of those not skilled in the involved technic. A work on Surgery has long since ceased to be the product of an indi vidual. We, therefore, extend our heartiest thanks to other authors, our predecessors and teachers; and for much help to Doctors G. M. Phelps and Ralph Colp, and also to Grace Adams and Emma Renick. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Chapter in Minor Surgery From the countless host of appliances in surgery, he has attempted to select those which his own experience and that of his friends among the older and more emi nent members of the profession can recommend as most useful. It has been his earnest endeavor, as a teacher in sur gery, to impress upon his students the fact that it would be through a practical knowledge of the little things of their profession that they would soonest reach the great result - success. The fact that he has been constrained to offer these pages in an unfinished form, in response to a demand from a large number of private students, has encouraged him to believe his efforts have not been fruitless. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Minor Surgery and Bandaging The Office of house-surgeon to a public hospital is one of the most responsible posts a young surgeon can occupy, and, at the same time, its value in giving him both experience and confidence can be scarcely too highly estimated. Before, however, entering upon the more purely surgical duties of the house-surgeon, it may be well to say a few words on his relation to the other Officials of the establishment, to the patients, and to the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Emergencies and Accidents No extended instruction has been given on principles of dressing, or ordinary pathological processes, as the work is supplementary to its predecessors. Major operations, and the principles of operative surgery, have also been briefly alluded to, as a later volume is designed to cover this field as thoroughly as the author's ability will permit. Nevertheless it is hoped that both for students and practitioners, the work will commend itself as eminently practical, and be found use ful in the class-room, and the varied emergencies of professional life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Minor Surgery, Including Bandaging The author has paid special attention to the aseptic and anti septic methods of treating wounds, methods which originated within the past few years and have brought indescribable benefit to humanity. The details of this important subject are given and in every way possible the reader is urged to follow certain rules in a way that we hope will be considered as characterized by clearness and simplicity. No bibliography has been given and literary references have been largely omitted. This has been done purely for the sake of simplicity and because the book represents the result of sev eral years of considerable experience in dispensaries, hospital practice and in college work. My grateful acknowledgments are due to Dr. W. E. Trego, Professor of Operative Surgery in the Cleveland Homoeopathic Medical College, for writing the chapter on Bandaging. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emergencies of a General Practice The scope of this book is expressed in the title. The author has attempted to record some of the observations and practical experi ences Of a somewhat active service of forty years in emergency practice, the class of work where the attending physician is called on to think quickly and to act with rapidity and good judgment. Reference is also made to certain pathologie conditions, appendicitis, tubal rupture, acute pancreatitis, etc., emergency cases though dis tinctly surgical. The general practitioner should be familiar with the clinical symptoms of these conditions, the prompt recognition of which will not only tend to relieve him of personal responsibility, but will enable him to insist upon surgical assistance at a time most opportune to his patient. Amputations, fractures, and dislocations are considered strictly from an emergency standpoint, or physician's first aid. Special forms of amputation and the more modern classical bone surgery are not alluded to, due to the many excellent textbooks on these sub jects. The object of the author is to consider the common, un heralded, everyday accidents or emergencies that may and do arise to confront the general practitioner at a time when least expected. Definite information along this particular line is limited, not oh tainable from textbooks, and certainly not available in time of great need; therefore the author feels that a work of this character de voted exclusively to this subject will prove of practical value and material assistance to many practitioners.
