Book Synopsis Champion Buffalo Hunter by : Jeanette Prodgers
Download or read book Champion Buffalo Hunter written by Jeanette Prodgers and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008-11-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Champion Buffalo Hunter is the fascinating memoir of one of the most legendary frontiersmen of the early West, “Yellowstone Vic” Smith. Born Victor Grant Smith in 1850, he lived a colorful life across the American frontier from the 1870s to 1890s. A classic frontiersman, he was a trapper, dispatch rider, scout, trick shot—and, yes, buffalo hunter extraordinaire. Discovered in Harvard University's Houghton Library in 1990, this remarkable autobiography—which Smith wrote in the third person—is comparable to Andrew Garcia's Tough Trip through Paradise, but, notes the editor, “without the melodrama.” Written in a matter-of-fact, often humorous style, it will engage and entertain all those interested in the lives and times of the men who wandered the West, following the great herds and settling only long enough for the snows to melt. This new edition includes a revised and updated foreword by Jeanette Prodgers based on new research into the life of Yellowstone Vic.

Book Synopsis Exploring Everyday Landscapes by : Annmarie Adams
Download or read book Exploring Everyday Landscapes written by Annmarie Adams and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together scholarship in diverse fields - including architecture, geography, folklore, anthropology, and urban studies - the seventeen essays in this volume confirm the transformations now occurring in the study of vernacular architecture. Moving away from a single vision of vernacular architecture that consisted only of old, rural, handmade structures built in traditional forms and materials for everyday use, scholars are exploring a wider variety of forms and landscapes - from company towns to grand expositions. Drawn from two conferences of the Vernacular Architecture Forum - one held in Charleston in 1994, the other in Ottawa in 1995 - these essays address a broad range of topics.
Book Synopsis For the Common Good? by : Jason Kaufman
Download or read book For the Common Good? written by Jason Kaufman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2003-08-07 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Golden Age of Fraternity was a unique time in American history. In the forty years between the Civil War and the onset of World War I, more than half of all Americans participated in clubs, fraternities, militias, and mutual benefit societies. Today this period is held up as a model for how we might revitalize contemporary civil society. But was America's associational culture really as communal as has been assumed? What if these much-admired voluntary organizations served parochial concerns rather than the common good? Jason Kaufman sets out to dispel many of the myths about the supposed civic-mindedness of "joining" while bringing to light the hidden lessons of associationalism's history. Relying on deep archival research in city directories, club histories, and membership lists, Kaufman shows that organizational activity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries revolved largely around economic self-interest rather than civic engagement. And far from spurring concern for the collective good, fraternal societies, able to pick and choose members at will, fostered exclusion and further exacerbated the competitive interests of a society divided by race, class, ethnicity, and religion. Tracing both the rise and the decline of American associational life - a decline that began immediately after World War I, much earlier than previously thought - Kaufman argues persuasively that the end of fraternalism was a good thing. Illuminating both broad historical shifts - immigration, urbanization, and the disruptions of war, among them - and smaller, overlooked contours, such as changes in the burial and life insurance industries, Kaufman has written a bracing revisionist history. Eloquently rebutting those hailing America's associational past and calling for a return to old-style voluntarism, For the Common Good? will change the terms of debate about the history - and the future - of American civil society."--Publisher's description.
Book Synopsis Swinging for the Fences by : Steven R. Hoffbeck
Download or read book Swinging for the Fences written by Steven R. Hoffbeck and published by Minnesota Historical Society. This book was released on 2005 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swinging for the Fences tells the great stories of baseball's past, from establishment of the color line and the early formation of the barnstorming teams to dazzling hits by black heroes that led the Twins to victory over the Cardinals in 1987. Each chapter focuses on one key player and gives readers an intimate look at the national pastime as it has evolved over the last century. These are stories of the bonds that formed between players, of legendary moments in baseball's past, and of real people whose love of the game kept them playing against tough odds. Featured here are Hall of Famers like Willie Mays, Roy Campanella, and Kirby Puckett and great players like Walter Ball, John Wesley Donaldson, and Bud Fowler, who, because of their race, never made the stats books.

Book Synopsis Historical Sex Work by : Kristen R. Fellows
Download or read book Historical Sex Work written by Kristen R. Fellows and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the sex trade in America from 1850 to 1920 through the perspectives of archaeologists and historians, expanding the geographic and thematic scope of research on the subject. Historical Sex Work builds on the work of previous studies in helping create an inclusive and nuanced view of social relations in United States history. Many of these essays focus on lesser-known cities and tell the stories of people often excluded from history, including African American madams Ida Dorsey and Melvina Massey and the children of prostitutes. Contributors discuss how sex workers navigated spatial and legal landscapes, examining evidence such as the location of Hooker’s Division in Washington, D.C., and court records of prostitution-related crimes in Fargo, North Dakota. Broadening the discussion to include the roles of men in sex work, contributors write about the proprietor Tom Savage, the ways prostitution connected with ideas of masculinity, and alternative reasons men may have visited brothels, such as for treatment of venereal disease and impotence. Focusing on the benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration and including rarely investigated topics such as race, motherhood, and men, this volume deepens our understanding of the experiences of practitioners and consumers of the sex trade and shows how intersectionality affected the agency of many involved in the nation’s historical vice districts. Book Synopsis Gus Hornsby's Gamble by : Larry LaTourette
Download or read book Gus Hornsby's Gamble written by Larry LaTourette and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1870s, Gus Hornsby spread the game of American football around the world like an evangelist and helped establish it in the U.S. heartland. Hornsby seemed destined for greatness as a journalist, inventor, explorer and entrepreneur. His arrogance, greed and an intractable gambling addiction, however, drove him to criminality and cast him into obscurity. But this public ruin led to his greatest accomplishment in prison: personal redemption. Surprisingly, Hornsby's meteoric rise and fall intersected with towering influencers of the time, including the women and men who would pioneer the "first-wave" feminist movement in the United States. This book explores their unexpected connections and interweaves their stories--along with details of the first American football game in the Midwest--to reveal elements of a pivotal moment in American history, both in feminism and sports. More than a biography of a person, it is a story about America--brash, imaginative and seemingly limitless in resources and creativity, but overly self-assured and wildly reckless.

Book Synopsis Minnesota's Notorious Nellie King by : Jerry Kuntz
Download or read book Minnesota's Notorious Nellie King written by Jerry Kuntz and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This true crime biography chronicles the misadventures of a lady outlaw who caused havoc across the late-19th century northern plains. The American historian Frederick Jackson Turner famously declared the 1890s to be the close of the American Frontier. But from 1887 to 1893, a young woman known as Nellie King was far from being tamed. King scandalized the residents of the Dakotas, Minnesota and northern Wisconsin with her fetching appearance, eccentric behavior, and criminal misdeeds. In Minnesota’s Notorious Nellie King, biographer Jerry Kuntz pieces together King’s legendary life—as well as the clues to her true identity. King employed more than a dozen aliases throughout her career as a fake detective, horse thief, laudanum fiend, and general disturber of the peace across the northern plains. She attracted sensational headlines, love-struck suitors, and stray revolver shots with equal abandon; her story’s Dickensian cast of characters included a hapless counterfeiter, a dashing physician, a battle-hardened magician, and a determined mother.
