Book excerpt: What's life really like on a fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) mine? In 2012, after touring his comedy shows through Europe, stand-up comedian Xavier Toby was broke and decided to take a job on a remote minesite to pay the bills. In his memoir, Mining My Own Business, Xavier Toby is onsite somewhere in Australia working in admin to pay off his credit card debt. Damo, Pando, Jonno, Robbo, Donk, Jokka and Dale are just some of the other blokes earning a crust, attending endless safety briefings, swapping tall tales and 'missing' the missus out there in the middle of nowhere. With Xavier, FIFO is not life on hold - it is life in hilarious overdrive.

Some of the names used have been changed for the respect of the veterans and their families. Also, some of the veterans mentioned in this novel are real persons and without their help, this book would not have been possible to write. There were other Marine Veterans not mentioned in this novel that were attached to Co. India, Co. Lima Co. Kilo, and Co. Mike. These four Companies of Marines mentioned in the novel fought gallantly and ferociously against the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese Armies south of Danang, Vietnam. These Marines fought bravely and this novel is dedicated to all who fought short skirmishes around the Tactical Area of Operations a few miles south of Danang, Vietnam. The Battle for Go Noi mentioned in this novel took place during the month of May 1968 where all four Companies of the 3rd battalion 27th Marine Regiment 1st Marine Division fought against three battalions of Vietcong and some regiments of North Vietnamese Armies that had crossed over from the country of Laos during the early months of 1968. Most important this novel is dedicated to all the Marines of the 3rd Battalion 27th Marine Regiment that gave their lives without question so that others would enjoy the freedoms of life and the continuity of our future generations.
Download or read book Unlikely Insider written by Jack Austin and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when too many of the world’s political leaders are consolidating power by playing on divisions and stoking fear, Unlikely Insider, a memoir by former federal cabinet minister and senator Jack Austin, comes as a welcome reminder of the value of public service as a force for economic progress, social justice, and nation-building. With both historical perspective and an eye to the future, Austin reflects on events and people whose impacts are still felt, and on the enduring challenges of Canadian life. Moving away from colonial domination of Indigenous Peoples, navigating our pivotal relationship with the United States and engagement with China, the nature and purpose of the Senate: these remain timely concerns, to which Austin has made significant contributions. Sharing insights into policy as well as into the personalities of colleagues and friends, Unlikely Insider paints vignettes of figures from Premier Zhou Enlai to Queen Elizabeth and recounts the author’s travels with Pierre Trudeau after the prime minister’s retirement. As a British Columbian, Austin worked to ensure that his province’s perspectives and interests mattered in Ottawa; as someone who came from a disadvantaged background, he is sensitive to the need to make the country a place of fairness and opportunity for all. Unlikely Insider reminds Canadians that inclusion – regional, social, and demographic – makes our nation both stronger and more just.

Book excerpt: Kevin O’Leary shares invaluable secrets on entrepreneurship, business, money and life. Can you make millions just by “visualizing yourself rich” as some business prophets suggest? Don’t buy it, says Kevin O’Leary. If you want to be a successful entrepreneur and amass wealth, you’re going to have to work for it. But the good news is: with the right guidance, focus and perseverance, you can turn entrepreneurial vision into lucrative reality and have the personal freedom that only wealth can buy. Kevin O’Leary would know. The much-feared and revered Dragon on the immensely popular show Dragons’ Den (and Shark Tank in the U.S.) started his company in his basement with a $10,000 loan from his financially savvy mother. A few years later, Kevin sold that company for more than four billion dollars. In this compelling, candid and, above all else, brutally honest business memoir, Kevin provides engaging, practical advice and lessons that will give anyone a distinct competitive edge.
