Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This state-of-the-practice report highlights how the transportation community is protecting roadways and mitigating damage from inundation and overtopping. In the absence of standard guidance, this report highlights major issues and design components specific to roadway embankment damage from flooding. It documents the mechanics of damage to the embankment and pavement, and the analysis tools available. The probable failure mechanisms are identified and various design approaches and repair countermeasures are highlighted. The information presented in the synthesis is based on a review of the related literature, a survey of current practice, and a series of telephone interviews with state departments of transportation. Examples of failures and repair techniques are illustrated through 14 case examples gathered from six states. The findings suggest that minimizing damage to roadway embankments can be tackled by altering the embankment design and slope protection techniques or altering the stream course, or both. The success of an approach is site-dependent because an approach that serves its intended design purpose at one site does not necessarily work at another site. To arrive at an adequate design, the following factors should be considered: hydrologic and hydraulic factors, geological and geotechnical factors, legal and funding aspects, and risk. Ideally, it is the combination of the probability of failure and the value of the consequence or risk that can most effectively guide the decision.

Book excerpt: Prepared by the Task Committee on Overtopping Protection of the Hydraulics Division of ASCE. This report summarizes the results of an inventory and evaluation of innovative spillway designs and overtopping protection systems developed to provide cost-effective safety modifications for existing dams. The information in this report, which covers pertinent projects in all stages from initial design through construction and operation, was derived from a literature search and a direct survey of the engineering community involved in dam safety modifications. The report contains a brief review of procedures to be used for assessment of the consequences of dam failure and the associated risks is presented for development of the design flood. This is followed by a discussion of innovative spillway designs and the state of the art in dam overtopping protection alternatives. ForØspillway design, this report especially focuses on the use of labyrinth spillways and fuseplug embankments. For overtopping protection systems, the report assesses roller-compacted concrete and precast concrete blocks for smaller dams and cast-in-place reinforced concrete slabs for larger dams. Nonstructural alternatives such as revised reservoir operating requirements and downstream early warning systems are also addressed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly urbanized world, water systems must be designed and operated according to innovative standards in terms of climate adaptation, resource efficiency, sustainability and resilience. This grand challenge triggers unprecedented questions for hydro-environment research and engineering. Shifts in paradigms are urgently needed in the way we view (circular) water systems, water as a renewable energy (production and storage), risk management of floods, storms, sea level rise and droughts, as well as their consequences on water quality, morphodynamics (e.g., reservoir sedimentation, scour, sustainability of deltas) and the environment. Addressing these issues requires a deep understanding of basic processes in fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, surface and groundwater flow, among others.

Eight of the tests were conducted over a rigid concrete test embankment, while the remainder were conducted over an embankment made of highly erosive soil. Hydraulic data were collected both above and below the revetment system, the latter being accomplished through the use of a remote pressure tranducer network.

Book excerpt: A series of evaluation procedures to determine the field performance of flexible erosion control materials were conducted at the TTI/TxDOT Hydraulics and Erosion Control Laboratory. The objectives of the study were to determine the effect of flexible materials on the germination and growth of native grasses, as well as to determine the effectiveness of the materials to prevent erosion on typical steep, roadside slopes before the establishment of permanent vegetation. Researchers repeated the vegetation establishment and soil retention portions of the evaluations on two soil types with the option for two different slopes, according to the manufacturer's preference. Researchers conducted the vegetation establishment evaluation by hydraulically applying the seed and fertilizer mixture on the plot, installing the erosion control product according to the manufacturer's published literature, and collecting data periodically throughout the growing season. The apparent vegetative cover of each plot is averaged for every round of data collection. Results include the four rounds of vegetation coverage data or the final round of vegetation data, depending on the analysis level. Researchers calculate the minimum amount of vegetation establishment from statistically analyzing the data set for significant difference ranges to the analysis level. Researchers conducted the erosion control portion of the study by artificially simulating various rainfall events with the greatest probability of occurrence during highway construction periods. The total dry sediment weight is calculated to achieve the total sediment loss per one hundred square feet of plot area. The report averages the results of each series of simulated design storms for each round of data collection. The resultant of total sediment loss is established by averaging the totals of each round of design storm values. Researchers establish the maximum amount of sediment loss from statistically analyzing the data set for significant difference ranges according to the analysis level.
