Book excerpt: The combination of increasing airport congestion and the ad vent of large transports has caused increased interest in aircraft wake turbulence. A quantitative understanding of the interaction between an aircraft and the vortex wake of a preceding aircraft is necessary for planning future high density air traffic patterns and control systems. The nature of the interaction depends on both the characteristics of the following aircraft and the characteristics of the wake. Some of the questions to be answered are: What deter mines the full characteristics of the vortex wake? What properties of the following aircraft are important? What is the role of pilot response? How are the wake characteristics related to the genera ting aircraft parameters? How does the wake disintegrate and where? Many of these questions were addressed at this first Aircraft Wake Turbulence Symposium sponsored by the Air Force Office of Sci entific Research and The Boeing Company. Workers engaged in aero dynamic research, airport operations, and instrument development came from several count ries to present their results and exchange information. The new results from the meeting provide a current picture of the state of the knowledge on vortex wakes and their interactions with other aircraft. Phenomena previously regarded as mere curiosities have emerged as important tools for understanding or controlling vortex wakes. The new types of instability occurring within the wake may one day be used for promoting early dis integration of the hazardous twin vortex structure.

"Whether a curious layperson, a trained physicist, or a beginning physics student, most everyone will find this book an interesting and enlightening read and will go away comforted in that the world is not so strange and inexplicable after all." —From the Foreword by Carl Wieman, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2001, and CASE/Carnegie US University Professor of the Year 2004 If you didn't know better, you might think the world was filled with magic—from the household appliances that make our lives easier to the CDs and DVDs that fill our world with sounds and images. Even a simple light bulb can seem mysterious when you stop to think about it. Now in How Everything Works, Louis Bloomfield explains the physics behind the ordinary objects and natural phenomena all around us, and unravels the mysteries of how things work. Inside, you'll find easy-to-understand answers to scores of fascinating questions, including: How do microwave ovens cook food, and why does metal sometimes cause sparks in a microwave? How does an iPod use numbers to represent music? How do CDs and DVDs use light to convey information, and why are they so colorful? How can a CT or MRI image show a cross-sectional view of a person without actually entering the body? Why do golf balls have dimples? How does a pitcher make a curveball curve and knuckleball jitter about in an erratic manner? Why is the sun red at sunrise and sunset? How does a fluorescent lamp produce visible light? You don't need a science or engineering background to understand How Everything Works, all you need is an active curiosity about the extraordinary world all around you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the intricate links between sleep and neuropsychiatric diseases. In clinical settings, understanding the development, treatment, and management of neuropsychiatric diseases poses a substantial challenge. Neuropsychiatric disorders place a significant cost on society, affecting the health of people affected, care providers, and the general community. Sleep and neuropsychiatric disease are inextricably linked. Sleep disorders are widespread in these populations and are frequently overlooked in neurology and psychiatry. The book offers readers up-to-date information on different facets of the bidirectional connections between sleep and neuropsychiatric diseases. Following the initial fundamental science part, a unique series of chapters concentrate on the behavioural manifestations of sleep problems, a hitherto unexplored field. Additional chapters include patient evaluation techniques as well as public health implications of sleep disorders. The individual chapters cover all main mental and neurological diseases where a change in sleep is evident, and recent concepts in pathogenesis, presentation, evaluation, and treatment. Neuropsychotropic drugs must be seen as a double-edged sword when it comes to sleep and sleep disorders. Overall, this book is an excellent resource for learning about neuropsychiatric diseases and how they affect sleep while simultaneously being impacted by sleep.
