Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the core of many engineering problems is the solution of sets of equa tions and inequalities, and the optimization of cost functions. Unfortunately, except in special cases, such as when a set of equations is linear in its un knowns or when a convex cost function has to be minimized under convex constraints, the results obtained by conventional numerical methods are only local and cannot be guaranteed. This means, for example, that the actual global minimum of a cost function may not be reached, or that some global minimizers of this cost function may escape detection. By contrast, interval analysis makes it possible to obtain guaranteed approximations of the set of all the actual solutions of the problem being considered. This, together with the lack of books presenting interval techniques in such a way that they could become part of any engineering numerical tool kit, motivated the writing of this book. The adventure started in 1991 with the preparation by Luc Jaulin of his PhD thesis, under Eric Walter's supervision. It continued with their joint supervision of Olivier Didrit's and Michel Kieffer's PhD theses. More than two years ago, when we presented our book project to Springer, we naively thought that redaction would be a simple matter, given what had already been achieved . . .

Book excerpt: This bookpresents material on both the analysis of the classical concepts of correlation and on the development of their robust versions, as well as discussing the related concepts of correlation matrices, partial correlation, canonical correlation, rank correlations, with the corresponding robust and non-robust estimation procedures. Every chapter contains a set of examples with simulated and real-life data. Key features: Makes modern and robust correlation methods readily available and understandable to practitioners, specialists, and consultants working in various fields. Focuses on implementation of methodology and application of robust correlation with R. Introduces the main approaches in robust statistics, such as Huber’s minimax approach and Hampel’s approach based on influence functions. Explores various robust estimates of the correlation coefficient including the minimax variance and bias estimates as well as the most B- and V-robust estimates. Contains applications of robust correlation methods to exploratory data analysis, multivariate statistics, statistics of time series, and to real-life data. Includes an accompanying website featuring computer code and datasets Features exercises and examples throughout the text using both small and large data sets. Theoretical and applied statisticians, specialists in multivariate statistics, robust statistics, robust time series analysis, data analysis and signal processing will benefit from this book. Practitioners who use correlation based methods in their work as well as postgraduate students in statistics will also find this book useful.

Book excerpt: For p >4 and one observation X on a p-dimensional spherically symmetric distribution, minimax estimators of Theta whose risks are smaller than the risk of X (the best invariant estimator) are found when the loss is a nondecreasing concave function of quadratic loss. For n observations X1, X2, ... Xn, we have classes of minimax estimators which are better than the usual procedures, such as the best invariant estimator, X-bar, or a maximum likelihood estimator.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Families of minimax estimators are found for the location parameter of a p-variate (pgt; or = 3) spherically symmetric unimodal(s.s.u.)distribution with respect to general quadratic loss. The estimators of James and Stein, Baranchik, Bock and Strawderman are all considered for this general problem. Specifically, when the loss is general quadratic loss given by L(delta, theta) = (delta - theta)'D(delta - theta) where D is a known pxp positive definite matrix, one main result, for one observation, X, on a multivariate s.s.u. distribution about theta, presents a class of minimax estimators whose risks dominate the risk of X, provided pgt; or = 3 and trace D gt; or equal 2dL where dL is the maximum eigenvalue of D. This class is given by Delta a,r(X)=(1-a(r(||X||2)/||X||2))X where 0lt; or = r(.)lt; or = 1, r(||X||2) is nondecreasing, r(||X||2)/||X||2 is nonincreasing, and 0lt;alt;(co/E(||X||-2)((traceD/dL)-2), where co=2p/((p+2)(p-2)) when pgt; or = 4 and co = .96 when p=3.

Book excerpt: This volume is a continuation of Unbiased Estimators and Their Applications, Vol. I: Univariate Case. It contains problems of parametric point estimation for multivariate probability distributions emphasizing problems of unbiased estimation. The volume consists of four chapters dealing, respectively, with some basic properties of multivariate continuous and discrete distributions, the general theory of point estimation in multivariate case, techniques for constructing unbiased estimators and applications of unbiased estimation theory in the multivariate case. These chapters contain numerous examples, many applications and are followed by a comprehensive Appendix which classifies and lists, in the form of tables, all known results relating to unbiased estimators of parameter functions for multivariate distributions. Audience: This volume will serve as a handbook on point unbiased estimation for researchers whose work involves statistics. It can also be recommended as a supplementary text for undergraduate and graduate students.

Book excerpt: This monograph is addressed to anyone interested in the subject of restrict- parameter-space estimation, and in particular to those who want to learn, or bring their knowledge up to date, about (in)admissibility and minimaxity problems for such parameter spaces. The coverage starts in the early 1950s when the subject of inference for - stricted parameter spaces began to be studied and ends around the middle of 2004. It presents known, and also some new, results on (in)admissibility and minimaxity for nonsequential point estimation problems in restricted ?ni- dimensional parameter spaces. Relationships between various results are d- cussed and open problems are pointed out. Few complete proofs are given, but outlines of proofs are often supplied. The reader is always referred to the published papers and often results are clari?ed by presenting examples of the kind of problems an author solves, or of problems that cannot be solved by a particular result. The monograph does not touch on the subject of testing hypotheses in - stricted parameter spaces. The latest books on that subject are by Robertson, Wright and Dykstra (1988) and Akkerboom (1990), but many new results in that area have been obtained since. The monograph does have a chapter in which questions about the existence of maximum likelihood estimators are discussed. Some of their properties are also given there as well as some algorithms for computing them. Most of these results cannot be found in the Robertson, Wright, Dykstra book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second, much enlarged edition by Lehmann and Casella of Lehmann's classic text on point estimation maintains the outlook and general style of the first edition. All of the topics are updated, while an entirely new chapter on Bayesian and hierarchical Bayesian approaches is provided, and there is much new material on simultaneous estimation. Each chapter concludes with a Notes section which contains suggestions for further study. This is a companion volume to the second edition of Lehmann's "Testing Statistical Hypotheses".
