This book was released on 2006-07 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Latin America Facing China by : Alex E. Fernández Jilberto
Download or read book Latin America Facing China written by Alex E. Fernández Jilberto and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last quarter of the twentieth century was a period of economic crises, increasing indebtedness as well as financial instability for Latin America and most other developing countries; in contrast, China showed amazingly high growth rates during this time and has since become the third largest economy in the world. Based on several case studies, this volume assesses how China's rise - one of the most important recent changes in the global economy - is affecting Latin America's national politics, political economy and regional and international relations. Several Latin American countries benefit from China's economic growth, and China's new role in international politics has been helpful to many leftist governments' efforts in Latin America to end the Washington Consensus. The contributors to this thought provoking volume examine these and the other causes, effects and prospects of Latin America's experiences with China's global expansion from a South - South perspective.

Book Synopsis The Roles of International Law in Development by : McInerney Lankford
Download or read book The Roles of International Law in Development written by McInerney Lankford and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-16 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roles of International Law in Development provides an in-depth analysis of the relationship between public international law and development. Unlike the existing body of literature on public international law, this book investigates how international law and development interact, and evaluates how significant a role international law plays in development. Bringing together a collection of perspectives from contributors working across multiple development fields, the chapters explore the relevance and applicability of international law to particular sectors and issues implicated in development activities. They analyse how international law rules and processes can influence procedural and substantive aspects of development policies as these regulate various forms of financial support, trade, technical assistance, and policy dialogue. They also explore whether, and how, development could be more effective and yield more equitable and sustainable outcomes if the relevant and applicable rules of international law were better understood, consistently incorporated, and appropriately applied in development activities. One of the foundational premises of this book is that development policy and practice should be grounded more systematically in international law, rejecting the notion that development policy is a 'self-contained' regime operating in a legal vacuum. By reflecting the substantive rules of international law, this in turn anchors development in international legal accountability.
Book Synopsis Financial Development, Economic Crises and Emerging Market Economies by : Faruk Ulgen
Download or read book Financial Development, Economic Crises and Emerging Market Economies written by Faruk Ulgen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recurrent crises in emerging markets and in advanced economies in the last decades cast doubt about the ability of financial liberalization to meet the aims of sustainable economic growth and development. The increasing importance of financial markets and financial efficiency criterion over economic decisions and policies since the 1980s laid down the conditions of the development process of emerging market economies. Numerous crises experienced thereafter gave rise to flourishing work on the links between financialization and economic development. Several decades of observations and lessons can now be integrated into economic and econometric models to give more sophisticated and multivariable approaches to financial development with respect to growth and development issues. In the markets-based and private-enterprise dominated world economy, two conditions for a successful growth-enhancing financial evolution can at least be brought fore: macroeconomic stability and consistent supervision. But even after the 2007-2008 global crisis, economists do not agree on the meaning of those conditions. For liberal and equilibrium-market economists, good finance and supervision mean market-friendly structures while for institutionalists, post-Keynesian and Marxist economists, good finance and supervision must lie in collectively designed and managed public structures. Drawing heavily on the tumultuous crises of the 1990s-2000s, this book argues that those experiences can shed light on such a crucial issue and lead economic theory and policy to go beyond the blindness of efficient free markets doctrine to economic catastrophes. It also points to new challenges to global stability in the wake of reconfiguration of international financial arena under the weight of major emerging market economies.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the latest in a series of annual reports on recent trends and developments in relation to foreign direct investment (FDI) and investment strategies in Latin America and the Caribbean region. The main message of this year's report is that active and integrated FDI attraction policies linked to national development strategies are necessary to secure quality FDI. These lessons are drawn from policy practices in the more successful European and Asian countries which contrast with the more passive and disconnected FDI attraction policies evident in Latin America and the Caribbean. The 2006 report also contains chapters that analyse the experiences of two relatively small investor countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Republic of Korea and Portugal.

Download or read book Latin America in Times of Global Environmental Change written by Cristian Lorenzo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the challenges of Latin America in global environmental geopolitics. Written by leading experts, this book brings together Latin American research on global environmental change. They cover a range of topics such as climate change, water, forest and biodiversity conservation connected with science policies, public opinion, priorities of international funds, and international politics of Latin American countries. The book describes the discrepancy between the international priorities and the regional needs or country interests. It includes several case studies and analyses the cooperation in multilateral negotiations on climate change. It also offers a synthesis of debates around global environmental changes and Latin American politics, which the authors have previously promoted in different academic events in South America, including in Santiago de Chile in Chile, and Buenos Aires and Ushuaia in Argentina. This book assesses the environmental problems from different perspectives, highlights the scientific development in the environmental changes affecting Latin America and offers a new view on geopolitics to help face those issues. Specialist readers in international relations, political sciences, environmental sciences, geography and geopolitics will appreciate this up-to-date examination of Latin America and the global environmental change.
