It has shown preliminary benefit to executive functions, which are general purpose control processes that regulate thought, emotion, and behavior in the service of one's goals and in non-routine situations. Three core executive functions are inhibition (withholding prepotent but contextually inappropriate responses), shifting (flexibly switching mental sets, tasks, or rules), and updating (maintenance of relevant information and replacement of irrelevant information in working memory). However, many studies demonstrating benefit to executive functions following mindfulness meditation are confounded by design factors that weaken internal validity (e.g., lack of randomization, non-active controls, inequivalent group expectations). It is also unclear what temporary effects exist following brief mindfulness practice, as well as why many mindfulness studies find null results. A potential moderator of the effects of mindfulness meditation is trait anxiety, which has been shown to decrement executive functions. Over three experiments, the current study used a well-controlled design to examine if brief mindfulness meditation temporarily improved the executive functions of inhibition, shifting, and updating, and if trait anxiety was a moderator of these effects. Results suggest that there were no unique, temporary effects of brief mindfulness meditation on any executive function, nor was brief mindfulness meditation differentially beneficial to those with high trait anxiety. Mindfulness meditation may benefit and protect executive functions, but the current results suggest that there are not reliable temporary benefits following a single session of practice.

Based on the affective events theory (AET; Weiss & Crospanzano, 1996), the current study hypothesizes that positive and negative work-to-family spillover will have indirect effects on the next-day organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) and counterproductive work behaviors (CWBs) via mood reported in the next morning. State mindfulness, a state of mind of being fully attentive and aware of the present moment (Brown & Ryan, 2003), is hypothesized to attenuate the effects work-to-family spillover on both positive and negative morning work mood, and the effects of morning work mood on OCBs and CWBs of the rest of the day. Eighty-two full-time U.S. workers recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) were invited to participate in a 7-day diary study. Hierarchical linear modeling results showed that both positive and negative work-to family spillover predicted mood in the next morning. Moreover, state mindfulness attenuated the relationship between morning positive mood and organizational citizenship behaviors carried out during the rest of the day. Our findings shed light on the role of mindfulness as a novel component in the traditional work-family framework and provided initial evidence regarding how mindfulness might tum into a double-edged sword when it comes to contextual performance.
