This book reports on the bundling of the creativity engines science and art and how a living triad of science, art and society can be forged from this. A creative triad, which over a period of two years has jointly committed itself to the utopia of enabling a synthesis of sustainable economy, healthy environment and a just society. The project Mind the Fungi (“Achtung Pilze”) is a Citizen Science research project, which resulted from the cooperation of the Departments of Applied and Molecular Microbiology and Bioprocess Engineering of the TU Berlin and the art and research platform Art Laboratory Berlin. It was intended to provide citizens with an opportunity for scientific collaboration. On the one hand, the project was intended to give a broad public an understanding of the importance of fungal biotechnology for a sustainable future and, on the other hand, to establish a research network here at the TU Berlin, in which, among other things, novel fungus-based biomaterials were to be researched with Citizen Scientists. The scientific and artistic paths in the Mind-the-Fungi project, which we followed together with the public from 2018 to 2020, including the Art &Design Residencies, can now be traced in text and images in this book.

Book excerpt: Although relatively little known, fungi provide the links between the terrestrial organisms and ecosystems that underpin our functioning planet. The Allure of Fungi presents fungi through multiple perspectives – those of mycologists and ecologists, foragers and forayers, naturalists and farmers, aesthetes and artists, philosophers and Traditional Owners. It explores how a history of entrenched fears and misconceptions about fungi has led to their near absence in Australian ecological consciousness and biodiversity conservation. Through a combination of text and visual essays, the author reflects on how aesthetic, sensate experience deepened by scientific knowledge offers the best chance for understanding fungi, the forest and human interactions with them.

Today, coffee, cacao, and rubber are threatened by fungi throughout the tropics. Indeed, fungi have carved their way through the ages, attacking every plant that we cultivate, constantly exploiting new hosts. In The Triumph of the Fungi, Nicholas Money offers an intimate picture of these pernicious microbes, the scientists who have sought to control them, and the people directly impacted by the loss of forest trees and cash crops. Even with the development of fungicides and other scientific breakthroughs, fungi continue to be unstoppable - this is the story of their triumph."--BOOK JACKET.

How do we want to live in the future? How do we take responsibility for the future of the Earth, for our environment, for our society? By facing the great challenges of today together. By fusing the creativity engines of science, art, and society in order to jointly and transdisciplinarily develop visions for a sustainable future and viable paths towards it.The book Engage with Fungi exemplifies such a transdisciplinary endeavour and focuses on collaborative research on and learning from fungi. Fungi are master builders, metabolic artists and experts in networking and collaboration. They teach us that nature is dominated by cooperation across species boundaries for collective benefit, and help us understand how limited resources can be tapped collectively. Thus, the book presents networked scientific, artistic and civil society research projects in the period 2020 to 2022. Initiated by the Department of Applied and Molecular Microbiology at TU Berlin, fungal biotechnology merged with the arts, design, architecture, and citizen science. Through this unique collaboration, concepts for fungal-based biomaterials could be jointly developed, bringing a sustainable living and dwelling within reach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungi are unlike any other living thing—they almost magically unique. Welcome to this astonishing world. . . Fungi can appear anywhere, from desert dunes to frozen tundra. They can invade our bodies and live between our toes or our floorboards. They are unwelcome intruders or vastly expensive treats, and symbols of both death and eternal life. But despite their familiar presence, there's still much to learn about the eruption, growth, and decay of their secret, interconnected, world. Aliya Whiteley has always been in love with fungi—from her childhood taking blurry photographs of strange fungal eruptions on Exmoor to a career as a writer inspired by their surreal and alien beauty. This love for fungi is a love for life, from single-cell spores to the largest living organism on the planet; a story stretching from Aliya's lawn into orbit and back again via every continent. From fields, feasts and fairy rings to death caps, puffballs and ambrosia beetles, this is an intoxicating journey into the life of extraordinary organism, one that we have barely begun to understand.
