Book excerpt: DescriptionExperiencing a car accident and suffering a head injury as a baby lead Yvonne to develop various illnesses including dyspraxia and lead her to develop the belief that she was being punished by God for being a quarter German. Only now has Yvonne managed to put all the pieces back together and come to terms with her illnesses and the trauma she had suffered. This is a strong and emotional yet influential autobiography. It has helped Yvonne put her traumas behind her, she hopes it will help somebody else to do the same. About the AuthorYvonne Poulson was born Yvonne Forster in July 1929 in Chingford, near Epping Forest, Essex. In 1964 Yvonne was divorced and now lives in a sheltered housing unit for the elderly in Dulwich. She wrote her book 'Mind Boggled' in response to a book given to her in the street by an evangelist called, 'You Are What You Read'. After working in theatre, print processing, graphics, art therapy and survivors poetry, Yvonne now belongs to Community Building in Britain (CBiB) and takes part in various Council Forums, she has four grandchildren and, in her spare time, paints trees. Book excerpt: The land is under attack from snowstorms. Each flake is warm to the touch, and when it reaches the ground, it fizzles and sizzles, then soaks in, leaving a small heat haze over the area, and eventually this poisons the ground underneath. Whonose, a Master Shipwright, is in contact with his sister, Whome, up at Ull, about this problem, where it is decided that the danger is coming from The Halh, as before. Whonose is chosen to visit the sanctuary of Lancheal Uzban, to get some advice. With his companions, Maximum Benkys and Ethin Twentyfive, they set out on their eventful journey. They meet Riffik Oozdal, Ma-cheng Pom and Odu Ishema, from whom Maximum learns all about Kolta, a mind and exercise regime; and a conclusive Mind-battle ensues. To the friend’s dismay, they are then asked to continue on their ‘wending’ to find a legendary Mist-breather. On this leg of their journey, they spend a night on the Field of Smaryde Tor, which is not as comfortable as expected. Finally, entering the Spur of Ethcara, it is here that the legend ends, and the fate of The Great Estate is determined.

Book excerpt: Parade's End is a tetralogy (four related novels) by Ford Madox Ford. It is set mainly in England and on the Western Front in World War I, where Ford served as an officer in the Welsh Regiment, a life vividly depicted in the novels. Ford Madox Ford (1873–1939) was an English novelist, poet, critic and editor whose journals. The four novels were originally published under the titles: Some Do Not ..., No More Parades, A Man Could Stand Up, and Last Post. They were combined into one volume as Parade's End, which has been ranked at number 57 on the Modern Library's 100 Best Novels list. J. Gray hailed "possibly the greatest 20th-century novel in English". Likewise, Mary Gordon labelled it as "quite simply, the best fictional treatment of war in the history of the novel". The novels chronicle the life of Christopher Tietjens, "the last Tory", a brilliant government statistician from a wealthy landowning family who is serving in the British Army during World War I. His wife Sylvia is a flippant socialite who seems intent on ruining him. Tietjens may or may not be the father of his wife's child.

But as she matures, her determination and wilfulness bring her into conflict with her ruthless father, 'Bullshark' Richard Ramsey, a powerful figure feared by everyone, including his wife. Book excerpt: An elegant, moving and heartfelt love letter to the sights, sounds and tastes of northern India told through the enthralling story of the troubled relationship between a father and daughter stretching from Partition to the present day. James Connor is a man who, burdened with guilt following a tragic event in his youth, has dedicated his life to serving India. Ruth Connor is his estranged daughter who, as a teenager, always knew she came second to her parents' missionary vocation and rebelled, with equally tragic consequences. After 24 years away, Ruth finally returns to Askival, the family home in Mussoorie, a remote hill station in the Northern State of Uttarakhand, to tend to her dying father. There she must face the past and confront her own burden of guilt if she is to cross the chasm that has grown between them. In this extraordinary and assured debut, Merryn Glover draws on her own upbringing as a child of missionary parents in Uttarakhand to create this sensitive, complex, moving and epic journey through the sights, sounds and often violent history of India from Partition to the present day. 'An original and engaging story. Glover understands houses are never just houses. Askival will break your heart.' Cynthia Rogerson, author of I Love You, Goodbye and If I Touched the Earth

Book excerpt: These wide-ranging tales of menace, tragedy, and comedy offer ample proof that “in the short story, as well as the novel, Graham Greene is the master” (The New York Times). Written between 1929 and 1954, here are twenty-one stories by a “master storyteller” (Newsweek). Whatever the crime, whatever the pursuit, whatever the mood—from the tragic and horrifying to the ribald and bittersweet, Graham Greene is “the ultimate chronicler of twentieth-century man’s consciousness and anxiety” (William Golding). In “The End of the Party,” a game of hide-and-seek takes a terrifying turn in the dark. In “The Innocent,” a romantic gets a rude awakening when he finds a hidden keepsake from a childhood crush. A husband’s sexual indiscretion is revealed in a most public and embarrassing way in “The Blue Film.” A rebellious teen’s flight from her petit bourgeois life includes a bad boy, a gun, and a plan in “A Drive in the Country.” In “A Little Place off the Edgware Road,” a suicidal man’s encounter with a stranger in a grubby cinema seals his fate. A young boy is ushered into a dark world when he discovers the secrets adults hide in “The Basement Room.” And in “When Greek Meets Greek,” a clever con between two scoundrels carries an unexpected sting. In these and more than a dozen other stories, Greene confronts his usual themes of betrayal and vengeance, love and hate, faith and doubt, guilt and grief, and pity and pursuit.

Marcus Ryegate returns to Massachusetts obsessed by a beautiful Indian woman. For sermonizing about her, he pays a heavy price. ø Harriet, one of Mildred Walker?s most fully realized characters, writes in her journal about "the effect of the Wilderness on civilized persons who are accustomed to live in the world of words." If a Lion Could Talk reveals the tragic lack of communication that stretches from Massachusetts to Missouri and beyond in the years before the Civil War?and the appalling heart of darkness that is close to home.

When John Silver came home from Vietnam he was suffering from PTSD but he didn’t know. For 46 years he dealt with PTSD. Yes, there was something wrong with his life but no clues. There was no one to talk to, not even his wife. Alcohol became his only friend. He found no shortage of co-horts to comfort him. In reality PTSD is a debilitating mental disorder and affects men returning from combat zones. They are then thrown into a civilian population that is not aware of PTSD. Not a good situation. One Who Comes and Goes is a small effort to try and alert and/or make aware a population who does not know what PTSD is.

Book excerpt: Jamie Wagner is a young lawyer who is happy to be flying under the radar at a large firm. It's not that he isn't smart. He is. It's just that hard work, not to mention the whole legal thing, isn't exactly his passion. Underachiever? A little. Content? Right up until the firm puts him on a case that turns his whole world upside down. Sheryl Harrison has served four years of a thirty-year murder sentence for killing her husband, who she claims was abusive. The case is settled---there shouldn't be anything for Jamie to do---except Sheryl's fourteen-year-old daughter, Karen, is sick. She has a congenital heart defect and will die without a transplant. Her blood type is rare, making their chances of finding a matching donor remote at best. Sheryl wants to be that donor for her daughter, and Jamie is in way over his head. Suicide, no matter the motive, is illegal. So with Sheryl on suicide watch, Jamie's only shot at helping her and saving Karen is to reopen the murder case, prove Sheryl's innocence, and get her freed so that she can pursue her plan on her own. Heart of a Killer---a gripping story of an ordinary man faced with an impossible situation---is the most powerful and shocking thriller yet from David Rosenfelt, a true master of the genre.

Book excerpt: Charming. Reckless. Brilliant. Deadly. A young Jack Kennedy travels to Europe on a secret mission for Franklin Roosevelt as the world braces for war. It’s the spring of 1939, and the prospect of war in Europe looms large. The United States has no intelligence service. In Washington, D.C., President Franklin Roosevelt may run for an unprecedented third term and needs someone he can trust to find out what the Nazis are up to. His choice: John F. Kennedy. It’s a surprising selection. At twenty-two, Jack Kennedy is the attractive but unpromising second son of Joseph P. Kennedy, Roosevelt’s ambassador to Britain (and occasional political adversary). But when Jack decides to travel through Europe to gather research for his Harvard senior thesis, Roosevelt takes the opportunity to use him as his personal spy. The president’s goal: to stop the flow of German money that has been flooding the United States to buy the 1940 election—an election that Adolf Hitler intends Roosevelt lose. In a deft mosaic of fact and fiction, Francine Mathews has written a gripping espionage tale that explores what might have happened when a young Jack Kennedy is let loose in Europe as the world careens toward war. A potent combination of history and storytelling, Jack 1939 is a sexy, entertaining read.

He drank the blood of his victims, and filled the castles of the land with wretches destined for the stake: Scourge of the Saxons, champion of the peasants, national hero who saved his country from Islamic conquest, Vlad was all of these, and much, much more... His name has become a byword for cruelty, Vlad’s draconian policies the horror of Europe. But who was the man behind the legend? Written off by historians, the Dacians were thought to have vanished immediately after the Roman conquest of Dacia, but Vlad, Son of the Devil, would revive the ancient Gaulish pride, bringing hope to the oppressed Wallach remnants of Transylvania through a dastardly series of impalements: he would become known in Romanian as Vlad Țepeș, the Impaler! A man more terrifying than any vampire.
