Book excerpt: The philosophy of perception is a microcosm of the metaphysics of mind. Its central problems—What is perception? What is the nature of perceptual consciousness? How can one fit an account of perceptual experience into a broader account of the nature of the mind and the world?—are at the heart of metaphysics. Rather than try to cover all of the many strands in the philosophy of perception, this book focuses on a particular orthodoxy about the nature of visual perception. The central problem for visual science has been to explain how the brain bridges the gap between what is given to the visual system and what is actually experienced by the perceiver. The orthodox view of perception is that it is a process whereby the brain, or a dedicated subsystem of the brain, builds up representations of relevant figures of the environment on the basis of information encoded by the sensory receptors. Most adherents of the orthodox view also believe that for every conscious perceptual state of the subject, there is a particular set of neurons whose activities are sufficient for the occurrence of that state. Some of the essays in this book defend the orthodoxy; most criticize it; and some propose alternatives to it. Many of the essays are classics. Contributors G.E.M. Download or read book The Mind's Eye written by Oliver Sacks and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Mind’s Eye, Oliver Sacks tells the stories of people who are able to navigate the world and communicate with others despite losing what many of us consider indispensable senses and abilities: the power of speech, the capacity to recognize faces, the sense of three-dimensional space, the ability to read, the sense of sight. For all of these people, the challenge is to adapt to a radically new way of being in the world. There is Lilian, a concert pianist who becomes unable to read music and is eventually unable even to recognize everyday objects, and Sue, a neurobiologist who has never seen in three dimensions, until she suddenly acquires stereoscopic vision in her fifties. There is Pat, who reinvents herself as a loving grandmother and active member of her community, despite the fact that she has aphasia and cannot utter a sentence, and Howard, a prolific novelist who must find a way to continue his life as a writer even after a stroke destroys his ability to read. And there is Dr. Sacks himself, who tells the story of his own eye cancer and the bizarre and disconcerting effects of losing vision to one side. Sacks explores some very strange paradoxes—people who can see perfectly well but cannot recognize their own children, and blind people who become hyper-visual or who navigate by “tongue vision.” He also considers more fundamental questions: How do we see? How do we think? How important is internal imagery—or vision, for that matter? Why is it that, although writing is only five thousand years old, humans have a universal, seemingly innate, potential for reading? The Mind’s Eye is a testament to the complexity of vision and the brain and to the power of creativity and adaptation. And it provides a whole new perspective on the power of language and communication, as we try to imagine what it is to see with another person’s eyes, or another person’s mind.

Book excerpt: Providing the information required to understand, advocate for, and supply post-acute vision rehabilitative care following brain injury, Vision Rehabilitation: Multidisciplinary Care of the Patient Following Brain Injury bridges the gap between theory and practice. It presents clinical information and scientific literature supporting the diagnostic and therapeutic strategies applied in a comprehensive overview of current diagnostic and treatment strategies in adult post-brain injury vision rehabilitation. Includes a foreword by Dr. Sue Barry Because post-brain injury rehabilitation works best in a team setting where the entire person can be treated, this text has been carefully designed as a multidisciplinary resource with an emphasis on models for working with the rehabilitation team. The book covers a myriad of topics such as post-brain injury vision rehabilitation; eye movements; binocular dysfunction; visual field loss; visual-spatial neglect; shifts in visual egocenter affecting balance and coordination; visual-vestibular interactions; central vs. peripheral visual attention; as well as deficits in object perception, visual memory, and visual cognition. The book details models that vision specialists working with the rehabilitation team can use to achieve the best success for the patient in rehabilitation; vision rehabilitation concepts and the science from which they have been developed; examples of therapeutic exercises; practice management information for the post-brain injury vision rehabilitation practice; and information on the legal process in which one frequently becomes involved in this type of work. Edited by eminent clinicians, the book highlights the work of contributors who are well-respected academicians and researchers, bringing together the clinical information that enables everyone involved in a brain injury case to grasp the diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
Book Synopsis Mind Before Matter by : Trish Pfeiffer
Download or read book Mind Before Matter written by Trish Pfeiffer and published by Iff Books. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materialism is the dominant worldview in the West today. But it is only one worldview, and it doesn't completely work, even, ironically, being gradually undermined by the science that gave rise to it. Containing the last unpublished writing of Pulitzer prize-winning author and scholar, the late John Mack, this anthology of essays from significant figures in the world of science and consciousness studies sketches the framework for a new model of realit--one based on the primacy of consciousness rather than of matter. It is a model we will need for survival on this planet. Mind Before Matter represents the first concerted salvo in a debate that could affect the worldview held by the modern, dominant culture.

Book excerpt: Preservation of good eyesight is almost impossible without proper eye education and mental relaxation. The quieter the mind, the better the eyesight is preserved. It is a fact that glasses help many to relieve their discomforts of their head and eyes and enable people to see well near or far, and their use in many cases is imperative. But it is also true that glasses do not check further deterioration and the power of glasses keeps on increasing. By using these simple methods of treatment, thousands of cases of poor eyesight have benefited greatly.
Book Synopsis The Vision Revolution by : Mark Changizi
Download or read book The Vision Revolution written by Mark Changizi and published by BenBella Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-06-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Vision Revolution: How the Latest Research Overturns Everything We Thought We Knew About Human Vision, Mark Changizi, prominent neuroscientist and vision expert, addresses four areas of human vision and provides explanations for why we have those particular abilities, complete with a number of full-color illustrations to demonstrate his conclusions and to engage the reader. Written for both the casual reader and the science buff hungry for new information, The Vision Revolution is a resource that dispels commonly believed perceptions about sight and offers answers drawn from the field's most recent research. Changizi focuses on four “why" questions: 1. Why do we see in color? 2. Why do our eyes face forward? 3. Why do we see illusions? 4. Why does reading come so naturally to us? Why Do We See in Color? It was commonly believed that color vision evolved to help our primitive ancestors identify ripe fruit. Changizi says we should look closer to home: ourselves. Human color vision evolved to give us greater insights into the mental states and health of other people. People who can see color changes in skin have an advantage over their color-blind counterparts; they can see when people are blushing with embarrassment, purple-faced with exertion or the reddening of rashes. Changizi's research reveals that the cones in our eyes that allow us to see color are exquisitely designed exactly for seeing color changes in the skin. And it's no coincidence that the primates with color vision are the ones with bare spots on their faces and other body parts; Changizi shows that the development of color vision in higher primates closely parallels the loss of facial hair, culminating in the near hairlessness and highly developed color vision of humans. Why Do Our Eyes Face Forward? Forward-facing eyes set us apart from most mammals, and there is much dispute as to why we have them. While some speculate that we evolved this feature to give us depth perception available through stereo vision, this type of vision only allows us to see short distances, and we already have other mechanisms that help us to estimate distance. Changizi's research shows that with two forward-facing eyes, primates and humans have an x-ray ability. Specifically, we're able to see through the cluttered leaves of the forest environment in which we evolved. This feature helps primates see their targets in a crowded, encroached environment. To see how this works, hold a finger in front of your eyes. You'll find that you're able to look “through" it, at what is beyond your finger. One of the most amazing feats of two forward-facing eyes? Our views aren't blocked by our noses, beaks, etc. Why Do We See Illusions? We evolved to see moving objects, not where they are, but where they are going to be. Without this ability, we couldn't catch a ball because the brain's ability to process visual information isn't fast enough to allow us to put our hands in the right place to intersect for a rapidly approaching baseball. “If our brains simply created a perception of the way the world was at the time light hit the eye, then by the time that perception was elicited—which takes about a tenth of a second for the brain to do—time would have marched on, and the perception would be of the recent past," Changizi explains. Simply put, illusions occur when our brain is tricked into thinking that a stationary two-dimensional picture has an element that is moving. Our brains project the “moving" element into the future and, as a result, we don't see what's on the page, but what our brain thinks will be the case a fraction of a second into the future. Why Does Reading Come So Naturally to Us? We can read faster than we can hear, which is odd, considering that reading is relatively recent,

Download or read book Mind's Eye Vision written by Keagan Caea and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-14 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a world of shadows and illusions, and of lies and deception. Finding our way through this stifling darkness requires that we learn how to recognize fraudulent distortion in all its forms. Shunning any and every preconceived notion that has been planted, and giving ourselves the ability to truly understand our own truth. This is what we call MIND'S EYE VISION, which is the ability to see with the mind and not only the eyes. And is something that is critical to our wellbeing for while the eyes sees mostly illusions, an awaken mind has the ability to see through all deception. This book has been written with one sole purpose, which is to remove the veil has placed over our eyes, and to break the chains that have been used to shackle our minds. It is a very short book consisting of only three chapters, but the words that lie within are sharper than the blade of a razor. Each chapter is separated into what the author conveniently call keys, because they are the keys to conquests for anyone who manages to attain mastery of them, and must thus be carefully articulated for they will only serve to sharpen the mind. One has to tread very carefully for knowledge of this caliber has the ability to blow minds to oblivion, and is ultimately dependent on the individual's level of enlightenment, something that negates the effect of the shock and softens the blow of what is revealed. As individuals we must learn how to comprehend the nature of the world we live in, to develop a heighten sense of things, and to see people and organizations for what they really are and not what they present themselves as. Accomplishing this will demand self discipline, and a conviction that will strengthen our resolve by ensuring that we deduce the truth behind our own history. A history that must be extrapolated from the wisdom that is attained through evidence, and one that will allow us TO KNOW THY ORIGINS, TO KNOW THY SELF, and TO KNOW THY ENEMY.

Download or read book The Beautiful Ones written by Prince and published by One World. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The brilliant coming-of-age-and-into-superstardom story of one of the greatest artists of all time, in his own words—featuring never-before-seen photos, original scrapbooks and lyric sheets, and the exquisite memoir he began writing before his tragic death NAMED ONE OF THE BEST MUSIC BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW AND ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST AND THE GUARDIAN • NOMINATED FOR THE NAACP IMAGE AWARD Prince was a musical genius, one of the most beloved, accomplished, and acclaimed musicians of our time. He was a startlingly original visionary with an imagination deep enough to whip up whole worlds, from the sexy, gritty funk paradise of “Uptown” to the mythical landscape of Purple Rain to the psychedelia of “Paisley Park.” But his most ambitious creative act was turning Prince Rogers Nelson, born in Minnesota, into Prince, one of the greatest pop stars of any era. The Beautiful Ones is the story of how Prince became Prince—a first-person account of a kid absorbing the world around him and then creating a persona, an artistic vision, and a life, before the hits and fame that would come to define him. The book is told in four parts. The first is the memoir Prince was writing before his tragic death, pages that bring us into his childhood world through his own lyrical prose. The second part takes us through Prince’s early years as a musician, before his first album was released, via an evocative scrapbook of writing and photos. The third section shows us Prince’s evolution through candid images that go up to the cusp of his greatest achievement, which we see in the book’s fourth section: his original handwritten treatment for Purple Rain—the final stage in Prince’s self-creation, where he retells the autobiography of the first three parts as a heroic journey. The book is framed by editor Dan Piepenbring’s riveting and moving introduction about his profound collaboration with Prince in his final months—a time when Prince was thinking deeply about how to reveal more of himself and his ideas to the world, while retaining the mystery and mystique he’d so carefully cultivated—and annotations that provide context to the book’s images. This work is not just a tribute to an icon, but an original and energizing literary work in its own right, full of Prince’s ideas and vision, his voice and image—his undying gift to the world.
