Book excerpt: "101 Collotype illustrations from photographs of Milwaukee. Printed by the Art Gravure and Etching Co., Milwaukee (illustrated ad in book). The photographer is not identified, but is possibly H. H. Bennett, who did a Milwaukee project two years earlier, and a copy of the present book is in his library. The Art Gravure and Etching Co. was one of a number of process houses in the West. It is difficult to plot the course of these companies because so little was written about them until late in the 1890's." -- Hanson collection catalog, p. 114.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milwaukee, 100 Photogravures The climate of Milwaukee is admirable, similar in many' respects to that of New England, tempered in summer by its proximity to Lake Michigan, from which blow cool and invigorating breezes, making the warmest Milwaukee days comfortable. In fact, Milwaukee has attained national reputation as a summer resort, as it combines all the conveniences and comforts of the city with the clear atmosphere of the country. The lawns, shaded streets and parks give a sense of freedom which cannot be obtained in any other metropolis. It is said that the cream-colored bricks, of which Milwaukee is built, reflect the sun instead of absorbing the heat, and that this, in some measure, accounts for the rapid escape of the summer heat and the coolness after nightfall. There are more shade trees in Milwaukee than in any other city of its size, and nearly all the residence streets are so arranged that the sidewalks run inside a little strip of greensward, in which stately trees are planted, thus forming a charming addition to the beauty of the surroundings. Milwaukee is blessed with numerous city parks which, though purchased within the last two years, are already showing the results of careful development. The Lake Shore parks are beautiful beyond descrip tion, and when the boulevards are completed throughout the city, it will make a park and drive system unrivaled. Near to Milwaukee, in every direction, are numerous inland lakes reached by romantic drives. Along the shores of Lake Michigan are various resorts where summer amusements are to be found. Statistics of health show that Milwaukee stands in the first rank - a fact accounted for by the rolling surface and the elevation above the lake; by pure water perfect drainage; the absence of excessive heat in summer, and the absence of poverty. Morally, Milwaukee is unrivaled, it being a remarkable fact that the number of policemen per capita is less than in any other large city in the world, and it might be added that this number have very little to do. This book was released on 2016-08-13 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encountering evidence of postmortem examinations - dissection or autopsy in historic skeletal collections is relatively rare, but recently there has been an increase in the number of reported instances. And much of what has been evaluated has been largely descriptive and historical. The Bioarchaeology of Dissection and Autopsy brings together in a single volume the skeletal evidence of postmortem examination in the United States. Ranging from the early colonial period to the early 1900’s, from a coffeehouse at Colonial Williamsburg to a Quaker burial vault in lower Manhattan, the contributions to this volume demonstrate the interpretive significance of a historically and theoretically contextualized bioarchaeology. The authors employ a wide range of perspectives, demonstrating how bioarchaeological evidence can be used to address a wide range of themes including social identity and marginalization, racialization, the nature of the body and fragmentation, and the emergence of medical practice and authority in the United States.

Book Synopsis Whitefish Bay by : Thomas H. Fehring
Download or read book Whitefish Bay written by Thomas H. Fehring and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abundance of whitefish in the Lake Michigan bay that frames this village gave it its name. The whitefish also helped feed the appetites of patrons of the resorts that once graced the community. Whitefish Bay quickly grew away from fishing and resorts to become the "Gold Coast" village north of Milwaukee. Nestled close enough to the city to allow an easy work commute, yet far enough away to provide an attractive community atmosphere, Whitefish Bay became a desirable location for families to put down roots. Stately homes went up alongside early farmhouses. Stores and other vibrant commercial enterprises quickly followed along with schools, churches, clubs, and organizations that continue to provide residents with a strong sense of community.
Book Synopsis Bootstrap New Urbanism by : Joseph A. Rodriguez
Download or read book Bootstrap New Urbanism written by Joseph A. Rodriguez and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph A. Rodriguez critically examines the urban design and revitalization initiatives undertaken by both the government and the people of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In the 1990s, New Urbanists followed a city tradition of using urban design to solve problems while seeking to elevate the city’s national reputation and status. While New Urbanism was not the only design element undertaken to further Milwaukee’s redevelopment, the elite focus on New Urbanism reflected an attempt to fashion a self-help narrative for the revitalization of the city. This approach linked New Urbanist design to the strengthening of grassroots community organizing and volunteerism to solve urban problems. Bootstrap New Urbanism: Design, Race, and Redevelopment in Milwaukee uncovers a practice with implications for urban history, architectural history, planning history, environmental design, ethnic studies, and urban politics.
