Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millimeter-Wave Waveguides is a monograph devoted to open waveguides for millimeter wave applications. In the first chapters, general waveguide theory is presented (with the emphasis on millimeter wave applications). Next, the book systematically describes the results of both theoretical and experimental studies of rectangular dielectric rod waveguides with high dielectric permittivities. Simple and accurate methods for propagation constant calculations for isotropic as well as anisotropic dielectric waveguides are described. Both analytical and numerical approaches are covered. Different types of transitions have been simulated in order to find optimal configurations as well as optimal dimensions of dielectric waveguides for the frequency band of 75-110 GHz. Simple and effective design is presented. The experimental studies of dielectric waveguides show that Sapphire waveguide can be utilized for this frequency band as a very low-loss waveguide. Design of antennas with low return loss based on dielectric waveguides is also described.

Book excerpt: Substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology is a twenty-first century transmission line that has evolved recently to open new doors to the development of efficient circuits and devices operating in the microwave and millimeter-wave frequency range. Microstrip circuits and devices are inefficient at high frequency applications and require very stringent manufacturing tolerances when used to implement microwave and millimeter-wave components. This is as a result of the fact that wavelengths are short at higher frequencies. Waveguide circuits and devices are preferred for higher frequency applications, but they are expensive and difficult to manufacture. It is also very challenging to integrate a waveguide device with planar devices in its vicinity. The SIW bridges the gap between the traditional air-filled waveguide and planar transmission lines such as microstrip. Practical Approach to Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) Diplexer: Emerging Research and Opportunities is an essential reference source that discusses the development of efficient circuits and devices operating in the microwave and millimeter-wave frequency range through the use of substrate integrated waveguides. Featuring research on topics such as microstrip resonators, circuit model analysis, and quality factor extraction, this book is ideally designed for researchers, engineers, scientists, developers, scholars, practitioners, educators, policymakers, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The millimeter-wave frequency band (30–300 GHz) is considered a potential candidate to host very high data rate communications. First used for high capacity radio links and then for broadband indoor wireless networks, the interest in this frequency band has increased as it is proposed to accommodate future 5G mobile communication systems. The large bandwidth available will enable a number of new uses for 5G. In addition, due to the large propagation attenuation, this frequency band may provide some additional advantages regarding frequency reuse and communication security. However, a number of issues have to be addressed to make mm-wave communications viable. This book collects a number of contributions that present solutions to these challenges.

Book excerpt: This is the first book in the series that is being called The Reviews of Infrared and Millimeter Waves. The series will contain the manuscripts of invited papers from conferences on this subject. This first book contains some of the invited papers from the XXth General Assembly of the Union-Radio-Scientifique Internationale, Washington, August, 1981. We were asked by the URSI Cornmittee to organize a two day symposium on millimeter and submillimeter waves This required the difficult choice of five topics which turned out to be (1) Ultra-low Noise Millimeter Wave Rec ivers (Detectors and Mixers), (2) Free Electron Maser and Gyrotron, (3) Measurements of Power and Noise Power, (4) Complex Dielectric Properties of Solids and Liquids, and (5) Radioastronomy. We have not yet collected all the m . . nuscripts and perhaps we never shall because the tine-. consur. J. ing effort required to prepare a comprehensive review nanuscript works a hardship on research scientists who are already overburdened. 've are particularly grateful, therefore, to the authors lVho have worked so hard to contribute the chapters to this book. The first four chapters contibute to the timely topic of detectors, nixers and re- ceivers. These authors: Tucker, Feldman, Rudner, Okamura, Hogg and their well-known colleagues have been among the leaders in this exciting emerging field for the past few years. The fifth chapter by Sakai and Genzel is the most comprehensive treatment of the metal mesh filter science that can be found in one place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics in Millimeter Wave Technology, Volume 1 presents topics related to millimeter wave technology, including fin-lines and passive components realized in fin-lines, suspended striplines, suspended substrate microstrips, and modal power exchange in multimode fibers. A miniaturized monopulse assembly constructed in planar waveguide with multimode scalar horn feeds is also described. This volume is comprised of five chapters; the first of which deals with the analysis and synthesis techniques for fin-lines as well as the various passive components realized in fin-line. Tapers, discontinuities, directional couplers, filters, and non-reciprocal devices are considered, along with attenuators, switches, detectors, phase modulators, mixers, and oscillators. The second chapter focuses on millimeter-wave planar integrated circuit filters, with particular reference to lowpass filter design that forms the basis for the bandpass filter design. The third chapter describes H-plane millimeter-wave planar transmission lines and circuits, along with various passive and active components realized using suspended substrate microstrips. The fourth chapter examines modal power dynamics and transmission characteristics of multimode optical fibers. The relation between a ray theory and a wave theory is also explained, and a theory of mode coupling and the modal power exchange is discussed. The book concludes with a chapter on planar waveguide versions of the classic dual-plane, amplitude-monopulse comparator realized in conjunction with a unique multimode scalar feed horn. This book will be of interest to students and practitioners of electronics and electrical engineering.

While fundamental theoretical aspects are discussed whenever necessary, the book primarily focuses on design principles and concepts, manufacture, measurement techniques, and practical results. Each of the various antenna types scalable to millimeter-wave dimensions is considered individually, with coverage of leaky-wave and surface-wave antennas, printed antennas, integrated antennas, and reflector and lens systems. The final two chapters address the subject from a systems perspective, providing an overview of supporting circuitry and examining in detail diverse millimeter-wave applications, including high-speed wireless communications, radio astronomy, and radar. The vast amount of information now available on millimeter-wave systems can be daunting for researchers and designers entering the field. This book offers readers essential guidance, helping them to gain a thorough understanding based on the most recent research findings and serving as a sound basis for informed decision-making.

Book excerpt: The Essence of Dielectric Waveguides provides an overview of the fundamental behavior of guided waves, essential to finding and interpreting the results of electromagnetic waveguide problems. Clearly and concisely written as well as brilliantly organized, this volume includes a detailed description of the fundamentals of electromagnetics, as well as a new discussion on boundary conditions and attenuation. It also covers the propagation characteristics of guided waves along classical canonical dielectric structures – planar, circular cylindrical, rectangular and elliptical waveguides. What’s more, the authors have included extensive coverage of inhomogeneous structures and approximate methods, as well as several powerful numerical approaches specifically applicable to dielectric waveguides.
