Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thousand and one ideas for making beautiful polymer clay millefiori. In Venetian glassmaking, slender rods of molten glass are shaped, then cut to reveal amazingly detailed patterns: flowers, geometric shapes, dancing colors. These slices are called millefiori, “thousand flowers,” because they form a carpet of flowers when placed side by side. Now celebrity author Donna Kato shows crafters exactly how to re-create these intricate, fascinating designs in polymer clay. The Art of Polymer Clay Millefiori Techniques reveals the entire process: how to work with the polymer clay, the basics of planning and creating a cane, and using color effectively. Dozens of canes, from simple to simply stunning, are included, and everything is clearly explained and illustrated with full-color photos, the Donna Kato way. Throughout the book, examples of stunning work by such millefiori artists as Kathy Amt, Pier Voulkos, and Kathleen Dustin provide inspiration. There must be a thousand ways to make beautiful millefiori . . . explore them all in The Art of Polymer Clay Millefiori Techniques.

Book excerpt: This gorgeous and empowering picture book from award-winning author-illustrator Evan Turk paints the portrait of Marietta Barovier, the groundbreaking Renaissance artisan who helped shape the future of Venetian glassmaking. Marietta and her family lived on the island of Murano, near Venice, as all glassmakers did in the early Renaissance. Her father, Angelo Barovier, was a true maestro, a master of glass. Marietta longed to create gorgeous glass too, but glass was men’s work. One day her father showed her how to shape the scalding-hot material into a work of art, and Marietta was mesmerized. Her skills grew and grew. Marietta worked until she created her own unique glass bead: the rosetta. Small but precious, the beautiful beads grew popular around the world and became as valuable as gold. The young girl who was once told she could not create art was now the woman who would leave her mark on glasswork for centuries to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photobook on Millefiori beads texture.Fascinated by the history of beads, their commercial travel routes and their modern and magnetic graphics, we wanted to explore these beautiful ornaments under new perspectives. Millefiori is a glass technique that produces decorative designs on glass beads. The term millefiori, meaning in Italian words "a thousand flowers", indicates a technique known from Roman times called "mosaic".The millefiori technique involves the production of glass canes, known as murrine, with multicolored motifs that are visible only from the cut ends. The murrine cane is heated in a furnace and pulled to the desired size while maintaining the cross-sectional structure.Once cooled it is then cut into cylindrical segments and then embedded and compacted to obtain a mosaic effect.Since the 15th century, Venetian glassworkers have been using this technique to fit the tastes of the times and from the 19th century, they began to produce star-shaped and more refined canes. For many centuries they represented an important product exported all over the world.A passion for these beads has allowed us to reflect on their historical value as a form of commodity. As a result we have created a photographic studio with mapping techniques concerning the textures obtained from the plane development of the cylindrical beads surfaces
