Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of us upon remembering a brilliant, quiet, perhaps socially apprehensive classmate in high school have wondered, "I wonder whatever happened to him or her?" This is the story of one of those anonymous wunderkinds. Every class had at least one person who left their classmates impressed by their intellect. While the star quarterback of the football team and the slam-dunking center of the basketball team were regaled and celebrated on and off the field and the court, these silent, often unacknowledged whiz kids were - Scoring a perfect 1600 on their SAT - Hitting the campus of MIT at 16 - Creating the next life-changing invention Mill Hill Scientist is the real-life story of one of these unsung wunderkinds-author James L. Stevens. The official discovery of the transistor effect the day he was born was a telling indication of the path he was destined to travel. His fascination with the electronic revolution and the Space Race fueled his growing passion to become a scientist. However, his humble beginnings in a poor family struggling to make ends meet did not provide a smooth road for James' scientific aspirations. But his intellectual giftedness, hard work, and determination, along with the unwavering support he received from his parents, teachers, and mentors, paved his way toward future success. While biographies of famous athletes, artists, and scientists abound, Mill Hill Scientist will motivate and inspire the unsung, everyday scientific heroes who touch all our lives and leave their mark on our society and our world.

Book Synopsis Uk Centre for Medical Research and Innovation (Ukcmri) by : Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Science and Technology Committee
Download or read book Uk Centre for Medical Research and Innovation (Ukcmri) written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Science and Technology Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Science and Technology Committee today agrees with, and commends, the scientific vision for the new UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation, but expresses reservations about the project's location. It says the case for the centre's central London location near St Pancras station was not overwhelming and it could have been sited elsewhere. The advantages of co-location with universities and hospitals and access to good transport links, which the Committee accepts play a fundamental role in the centre's vision, come at a price: extra construction costs; a site incapable of expansion; and the concentration of medical sciences in the 'golden triangle' in the south of England. On the issue of funding, the Committee's concerns about the project's costs were assuaged by evidence from the Government that the taxpayer will not be liable to any further costs should the project overrun. On the management structure, the committee was told that an experienced team with a proven track record were now taking charge. The Committee is sympathetic to the local community's concerns about the project, and recognises attempts made by the centre's management to engage with the local community, but says it is saddened that efforts have not been as successful as they might have been. One way some benefit could accrue back to the local community is to ensure that the land released from the National Temperance Hospital site (the original site intended for the UKCMRI) is used for housing, including social housing.

Download or read book Love and Science written by Jan Vilcek and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before he became one of the world's most celebrated immunologists, Jan Vilcek began life in Slovakia as the child of Jewish parents at a time when Jews were being exterminated all across Europe. He owes his and his mother’s survival to the courage of brave people and good luck. As a young man growing up in Czechoslovakia in the aftermath of the Second World War, Vilcek went to medical school and chose a career in virology and immunology at a time when these fields were still in their infancy. While still in his twenties he published a paper in the prestigious journal Nature, and he hosted the first international conference on interferon. Fleeing Communist Czechoslovakia with his wife Marica, Vilcek continued his research at NYU School of Medicine, going on to establish a highly successful career in biomedical research, and creating one of the most important and trailblazing medicines of our age. After his arrival in the US in 1965 as a penniless refugee, he soon went on to spearhead some of the key advances in the research of interferon that enabled its therapeutic application, and through his research into tumor necrosis factor (TNF) made advances that led to the discovery of new genes and proteins and signaling pathways, opening up previously uncharted areas of medical innovation that have led to important new treatments for a wide range of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Along the way Vilcek acquired material wealth he had never aspired to, catapulting him into the world of philanthropy. Love and Science shows how advances in science sometimes result from the greatest disappointments, and how achievement in medical research is usually a team effort, where ideas are shared, where friendship and love sometimes matter most and serendipity is as important as a will to succeed—and where, over time, the least expected thing sometimes becomes the most important. In Vilcek's case the vaunted cure for cancer that many saw in TNF never materialized. However, out of the ashes of that hope came many related treatments that have changed countless lives and alleviated much suffering.
Book Synopsis Science and Technology in the Industrial Revolution by : Albert Edward Musson
Download or read book Science and Technology in the Industrial Revolution written by Albert Edward Musson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1989 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrating on the Industrial Revolution as experienced in Great Britain (and, within that sphere, mainly on the early development of the engineering and chemical industries), the authors develop the thesis that the interaction between theorists and men of practical affairs was much closer, more complex and more consequential than some historians of science have held it to be. Deeply researched, gracefully argued and fully documented. First published in 1969, and established now as a "classic" in the field, the present edition has a new foreword by Margaret C. Jacob.
