Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Surgery of the Zone of the Advance This concise vade-mecum on the treatment of war wounds is, in no sense of the word, a text-book on military surgery. Its essential aim is to give a resume of the primary treatment which, in the light of painfully acquired experience on the western front during the past three years, has proved most satisfactory in the opinion of those best qualified to judge. Little or no attempt has been made to discuss pathology or diagnosis, fundamentals with which the army surgeon is deemed sufficiently well equipped. It is written essentially for the Medical officer who, well grounded though he be in the principles and practice of his art in times of peace, finds himself now confronted with an environment and a class of traumatic lesions foreign to him. Civil surgery is mainly directed toward the control of pathological conditions, through the agency of wounds deliberately made by the surgeon, usually under a favorable and selected environment. In his newly assumed role of military surgeon the same doctor is no longer able to choose his own conditions; he has to make the best of those in which his lot is cast. As a famous French surgeon concisely states the matter: "On fait ce que l'on peut, ou on le peut, quand on le peut, comme on le peut," i. e., "One does what one can, where one can, when one can, how one can." No longer allowed to consider the case of the individual as paramount, his treatment must invariably be subservient to the military necessities of the moment. This brings up a question of fundamental importance with which we are immediately confronted. With us, speaking in general terms, neither the physician nor the sanitary personnel has had any previous knowledge of military matters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Military Surgery In this view of the matter I am fully borne out by the existing regulations of the British service at the present moment. By an edict of his late Majesty, the appointments of physicians to the forces were annulled, while the surgeons and assistant-surgeons retain their place and it is not a little curious to observe, that after repeated changes in the designa tion, rank, titles, and implied acquirements of the medical Officers Of the army, we should now appear to be acting in conformity to the sentiments which prevailed upon this sub ject more than two hundred years ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Selected List of Books on Military Medicine and Surgery: September 24, 1917 The present list seems the most directly useful way in Which the Library can make its resources available for the military centers now being created throughout the country. It has been prepared under the pressure of limited time and important events, and may not, either in selection or in edit ing, fulfill its ideal at all points, yet as a selection of recent and commendable literature it probably Will meet the need at the cantonments. The Library's collections in every field of Medicine are constantly growing, so it may be possible to supplement this list from time to time. While the list was intended to contain books only, yet it was deemed advisable to include a few selected references to articles in periodicals, on the subject of the treatment of war wounds, as no books on this subject were available. By a special appropriation the Directors have made pos sible the loan of a number of the books contained in this list. The loans will be made to the cantonment libraries for short periods. Periodicals as a rule cannot be lent, but photographic reproductions of articles can be furnished at a small expense. This list, the thirteenth of the Library's bibliographical publications, is in a smaller format than those previously issued, and With shorter entries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Military Surgery, for the Use of Surgeons in the Confederate Army: With an Appendix of the Rules and Regulations of the Medical Department of the Confederate Army As the strength of an army depends more upon the health and physical development of the soldier than in mere nunibers, the hygiene of camps and the susceptibility of soldiers to disease, has long been a worthy study for mili tary leaders. When men are taken from civil life, where they are accustomed to think and act for themselves, and are gathered together as sol diers, the very act of acknowledgment or mus tering in, deprives them of all liberty of action, and makes them dependent upon their superior officers. They must now live after a formula With its drills, labors, fatigues, privations, expos ures, guard duties, night watchings and rigid discipline. This new life, which is so.difi'erent from his former habits, establishes a new era. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Nursing in War The surgical literature of the Great War already includes many scores of valuable and illuminating articles contributed to various periodicals, and a few books. From these voluminous sources, supple mented by letters from the front, it has been thought desirable to collect the lessons and descriptions which are of vital import, that they may be avail able for ready reference by those who contemplate joining the nursing corps of Military Hospitals (or have already done so), as their time is of necessity too limited for the wide reading involved. Useful suggestions have been received from those who have been personally in service at the front, and indebted ness is hereby acknowledged to the valuable work of Major Hull - Surgery in War - which has been freely consulted and quoted in regard to descriptions of methods practised by members of the Royal Army Medical Corps of Great Britain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Medical and Surgical Essays: Prepared for the United States Sanitary Commission The essays which are contained in the present volume were prepared, under the auspices of the United States Sanitary Commission, by gentlemen selected for their presumed acquaintance with the subjects upon which they were desired to write, and were originally published as separate monographs for gratuitous distribution to the medical officers of the army. The favor with which they have been received both at home and abroad, and the wish expressed in many quarters that they might be arranged in a more permanent form, have led to their collection and republication in one volume. When the rebellion broke out, there were but few works treating of medical subjects from a military point of view which were attainable by the thousands of physicians who entered the army. That much good has been accomplished by the essays contained in this volume, scarcely admits of a doubt. The demand for them has been immense, and all of them have been reprinted several times. Though at the present day, when through the large experience winch our army medical officers have acquired, such monographs are scarcely necessary for their use, there are continually new candidates for military service coming forward to whom they cannot be too highly recommended.
