Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Military Hygiene and Sanitation In the discussion of Alcohol and other Narcotics, the aim has been to enable pupils to form an intelligent opinion upon the whole subject and especially to distinguish between mere assertion and scientific evidence. While certain of the data in this chapter cannot be accepted as wholly proved, they yet represent the views of the ablest investigators everywhere. With a clear comprehension of the matter, each one may then determine for himself what his personal relations with these substances shall be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Military Hygiene; Especially Arranged for Officers, and Men of the Line Since the first appearance of this book there has been a notable and gratifying increase in the interest that line officers and men have manifested in matters of hygiene and sanitation, and a corresponding increase in the effectiveness of disease - preventing measures. That this improvement has occurred is not necessarily evidence that the book has been instrumental in bringing it about, but expressions of opinion from various officers have led me to think it a possible factor, and have in that way encouraged me to revise and in parts rewrite it, while a supplementary chapter has been added, in the belief that interest in the subject entitles the reader to a knowledge of advances more recently made, and in the hope that such interest and the usefulness of the book may be increased. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Military Hygiene; Especially Arranged for Officers, and Men of the Line There can be little or no doubt that the sanitation of the army would be greatly improved if line officers and enlisted men should become more interested in the subject, and cooperate more freely and intelligently with medical officers in the efforts to promote it. Book Synopsis Health of the Seventh Cavalry by : P. Willey
Download or read book Health of the Seventh Cavalry written by P. Willey and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its charismatic leader George Custer and its memorable encounters with Plains Indians, including the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Seventh Cavalry serves as the iconic regiment in the post–Civil War U.S Army. Voluminous written documentation as well as archaeological and osteological research suggest that the soldiers of the Seventh represented a cross section of the men who joined the army as a whole at the time. In Health of the Seventh Cavalry, editors P. Willey and Douglas D. Scott and their co-contributors—experts in history, medicine, human biology, epidemiology, and human osteology—examine the Seventh’s medical records to determine the health of the nineteenth-century U.S. Army, and the prevalence and treatment of the numerous conditions that plagued soldiers during the Indian Wars. Building on previous comparisons of archaeological evidence and medical records, Willey and Scott follow multiple lines of inquiry to assess the health of the Seventh, from its organization in 1866 to its 1884 station on the Northern Great Plains. Pairing general overviews of nineteenth- and twentieth-century health care with essays on malaria, injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other specific ailments, Health of the Seventh Cavalry provides fresh insights into the health, disease, and trauma that the regiment experienced over two decades. More than 100 tables, graphs, and maps track the troops’ illnesses and diseases by month, season, year, and location, as well as their stress periods, desertions, and deaths. A glossary of medical terms rounds out the volume. As an ideal exemplar of regiments of its time, the Seventh Cavalry affords scholars and enthusiasts a better understanding of nineteenth-century health and medicine. This volume reveals the struggles that the post–Civil War Seventh, and the entire U.S. Army, faced on the battlefield and elsewhere.

Book Synopsis Elements of Field Hygiene and Sanitation by : Joseph Herbert Ford
Download or read book Elements of Field Hygiene and Sanitation written by Joseph Herbert Ford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Field Hygiene and Sanitation One of the important subjects with which newly commissioned officers must acquaint themselves is the care of troops. Disease has killed more soldiers than powder and shot, and has occasioned the defeat of many armies. But when so much other military knowledge must be acquired, a description of how troops are kept healthy should be brief. This booklet, therefore, considers only those points that are of proven value. Many illustrations are employed in order to give clear ideas of the sanitary apparatus used in different armies and to abbreviate the text. The diagrams after Havard, Lelean, Tournade, Lewis and Miller, Peck and Trinca, are reproduced by courtesy of Wm. Wood and Company, Messrs J.A. Churchill, M. Fournier, the Military Surgeon and the British Medical Journal respectively. The first mentioned have also kindly permitted the usage of Havards text descriptive of the figure reproduced. Book Synopsis Sanitation in War (Classic Reprint) by : P. S. Lelean
Download or read book Sanitation in War (Classic Reprint) written by P. S. Lelean and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sanitation in War To the attainment of that aim there is one essential condition - the intelligent co-operation of the whole personnel of the field force - and it is upon the knowledge of sanitation possessed by medical officers that this essential condition primarily depends. To the R.A.M.C. officer the sanitary methods of field service are necessarily familiar; the civilian practitioner who serves with the army for the first time finds himself at a grave disadvantage when faced by problems in the solution of which the training provided by the civil medical curriculum affords little assistance. In order therefore to lighten the difficulties of those practitioners who have loyally volunteered their services, a series of lectures dealing with subjects of practical value in war have been organized at the R.A.M. College. The appreciation of those gentlemen who have attended these lectures has indicated that the information thus summarized would prove of value to those who have been unable to attend the various courses arranged. The wider the scope and the more precise the knowledge of medical officers on all matters affecting the health of the troops, the greater will be the measure of success attending their efforts to maintain that fighting efficiency upon which depend to so great an extent the prospects of a speedy and successful conclusion of the war.
