Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Expeditions Beyond the Seas, Vol. 2 of 2 The armies of the Roman republic and empire had to contend with adversaries in many countries, and, like ours, had often to cross the sea to get at their enemy. Historians have dwelt on their vic tories and defeats, and have recorded a mass of facts from which the military student can draw very profitable lessons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Expeditions Beyond the Sea, Vol. 1 of 2 Ou the subject of embarkation and landing, Admiral Sir William Mends, who for many years administered with great credit the Transport branch of the Admiralty, in a lecture on disembarkation of troops, said: In all the operations I have quoted, beyond the fact of their accomplishment, we have few details to aid the practical officer in preparing for such an undertaking. And when I carry my mind back to that of 1854, I am more than ever sensible of the unpreparedness of the practical mind to grapple with them, and our lack of the proper appliances to ensure rapidity and precision. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alone on a Wide Wide Sea, Vol. 2 of 3 It was cold, but the sweep of the dry night-wind was refreshing and inspiriting to me, who had been confined to my cabin all day. A bull's eye lamp burnt under the overhanging ledge of the poop-deck. Beneath it was the clock, and the small hand was close upon one. The gleams of the lamp touched no living figure, and so lonely looked the ship that I could have easily supposed myself the only human being on board of her. Eve effingham slept little: although the motion of the ship had been much more severe and uncomfortable while contending with head-winds, on no other occasion were there so many signs of a fierce contention of the elements as in this gale. While I live no eye but mine shall see What I write. When I am dead, it is Evan geline's, With all that I possess. It is not that I believe I shall die to-night or to-morrow, but it is as well to think of things. It is right that Evangeline should know something of 'my inner life, so that she may give men the lie Who speak ill of me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ocean Tragedy, Vol. 2 of 3 Take my compliments to him and say I should like to see him at once, if possible - here, in the cabin, I mean.' Whilst I waited, Muffin, hearing my voice, came from his berth. I watched him out of the corner of my eyes; he slowly advanced in a sort of writhing way, making many grimaces as he approached, as if in the throes of rehearsing a speech, and presently stood before me, first cast ing a look at the second steward who was polish ing a looking-glass, and then clasping his hands before him and hanging his head. She was a good wife and woman in many ways; but she understood neither her husband nor the rest of the world. In fact, she never laid herself out to do so, and was therefore continually treading on his and everybody's toes. She, poor woman, was the greatest loser, as she kept all love at a distance. Even her only son on whom she doted, rather endured than loved her She had tried to bring him up, too, by rule, and, as the sure result, had turned out thereby a creature to whom rule was unknown. Justice first, then mercy, she fancied was her maxim, and thought it a very grand one; and, like all who lead sham lives on sham principles, she produced all the evil of the maxim without any of the good.
