This book was released on 2009-09-08 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apoptosis is a highly regulated mechanism by which cells undergo cell death in an active way. As one of the most challenging tasks concerning cancer is to induce apoptosis in malignant cells, researchers increasingly focus on natural products to modulate apoptotic signaling pathways. This book reviews the main effects of natural compounds on the different apoptotic signaling pathways, including the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis pathways, the NF-kB-mediated pathway, the PI3K/Akt signaling, and other main pathways. Among the topic specially covered are: Effects of natural compounds on cancer cells Natural compounds as inducers of cell death Diet in health and disease Inflammation and cancer Natural compounds as kinase inhibitors Natural compounds in neurodegenerative diseases Natural compounds as inhibitors of ROS NOTE: Annals volumes are available for sale as individual books or as a journal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is produced by optimally stimulated T cells and is the major growth factor for T cells. Quiescent T cells do not synthesize IL-2, but upon stimulation, IL-2 is quickly expressed due to the coordinate binding of transcription factors within a 300 base pair promoter. Activation of the transcription factors involved in IL-2 transcription is highly dependent on proper stimulation through the T cell receptor (TCR) as well as a co-stimulatory molecule such as the CD28 receptor. TCR-induced signals are necessary to induce the binding of most, but not all, factors to the IL-2 promoter. CD28 stimulation synergizes with the TCR to activate many of these factors, but is also responsible for the induced binding of a novel complex to a region of the IL-2 promoter known as the CD28 responsive element (CD28RE). Determination of the proteins which function at this site was investigated. Functional studies led to the discovery that the CD28RE forms a composite element with a proximal AP-1 site. Together, the CD28RE/AP-1 sequences bind a complex that contains c-Rel, c-Fos, c-Jun, and the novel protein p21 SNFT in Jurkat T cells. Further analysis of p21SNFT indicates that it inhibits IL-2 promoter activity due to its ability to repress AP-1-associated enhancers required for transcription. Functional and binding studies using nuclear extracts and purified proteins suggest that p21 SNFT competes with Fos proteins for Jun binding, thereby effectively decreasing the numbers of transcriptionally active AP-1 heterodimers that form. While much is known about transactivation requirements for IL-2 expression, less is known about the inhibitory processes that shut down or prevent IL-2 transcription. Therefore, the identity of a novel protein that represses IL-2 promoter activity may help in our understanding of the mechanisms involved in the silencing of the IL-2 gene in situations such as in sub-optimally stimulated T cells, anergic T cells, or during T cell differentiation.

Book excerpt: Rodent Malaria reviews significant findings concerning malaria parasites of rodents, including their taxonomy, zoogeography, and evolution, along with life cycles and morphology; genetics and biochemistry; and concomitant infections. This volume is organized into eight chapters and begins by sketching out the history of the discovery of rodent as well as aspects of parasitology, immunology, and chemotherapy. These concepts are investigated two decades following Ignace Vincke's major discovery and Meir Yoeli's successful establishment of the method of cyclical transmission of the parasite. The following chapters focus on the taxonomy and systematics of the subgenus Vinckeia, with reference to the concepts of species and subspecies of animals and the degree to which they apply to malaria parasites, in particular to those of rodents. The discussion then shifts to how the rodent malaria parasites provide a unique insight into the subcellular organization of Plasmodium species, the use of rodent malaria as an experimental model to study immunological responses, and infectious agents that interact with malaria parasites. The book concludes with a chapter on malaria chemotherapy, with emphasis on the value of rodent malaria in antimalarial drug screening and the use of antimalarial drugs as biological probes. This book will be of interest to protozoologists and physicians as well as those from other disciplines including biochemistry, immunology, pharmacology, cell biology, and genetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precision Public Health is a new and rapidly evolving field, that examines the application of new technologies to public health policy and practice. It draws on a broad range of disciplines including genomics, spatial data, data linkage, epidemiology, health informatics, big data, predictive analytics and communications. The hope is that these new technologies will strengthen preventive health, improve access to health care, and reach disadvantaged populations in all areas of the world. But what are the downsides and what are the risks, and how can we ensure the benefits flow to those population groups most in need, rather than simply to those individuals who can afford to pay? This is the first collection of theoretical frameworks, analyses of empirical data, and case studies to be assembled on this topic, published to stimulate debate and promote collaborative work.
