Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bellarmine Feint is an intellectual thriller reminiscent of the late Michael Crichton’s wrapping an adventure around a scientific core. The underlying theme is that the pursuit of progress and prosperity through constant innovation and novelty is threatened by the limits discovered in the new science of complexity theory. It turns out that moderation is not just an ethical or pragmatic consideration, but a scientific necessity. The Vatican, bent on restoring the importance of tradition and order, devises a plan to use this discovery to both preserve its existence, and to curb the conduct of the modern secular state. In order to test this strategy, Dr. Alan Voldt, an unaware player, is sent to Turkey in 2018 to finalize an inter-university exchange agreement. Voldt is an unlikely candidate to be a lay numerary of the Vatican’s Order of Opus Dei. The former Youngstown State tight end and Marine platoon leader is a controversial authority on the rise and fall of civilizations. Although a committed Catholic, he follows in the footsteps of St. Augustine, who until well into his thirties had prayed, “Grant me chastity and continence, but not yet.” At 41, Voldt has still not turned that corner. Turkey’s controversial entry to the European Union gets tangled up with the Vatican strategy through Voldt’s furtive affair with Sila Gyor, a prominent Turkish TV anchor. Her views on Turkey’s future reflect a yearning for Ottoman past glory. This conflicts with a family tradition loyal to the Ataturk European-oriented vision. The ensuing contention over her son’s allegiance leads to tragic consequences. Inexorably, Turkey’s MiT and America’s CIA are drawn into the plot, because interpretations of the Vatican strategy assume conspiratorial dimensions. In parallel, a Canadian-based Russian oligarch, Maksim Ioshchenkov, also has an interest in Voldt for his access to human terrain analysis--the mapping of tribal, clan, family and clique dynamics underlying formal social structures. This knowledge is essential to his ambition to reopen oil and gas fields in the volatile northern Afghan province of Jozwan. The matter disturbs Voldt. Having been wounded in Afghanistan, the prospect of returning threatens to release his repressed PTSD nightmares. Despite his best efforts he is unable to avoid facing his demons. Keywords: Complexity, Moderation, Adventure, Chaos, Turkey, Opus Dei, Nonlinearity, Afghanistan, CIA, Danube

Book excerpt: Laugh out loud, cringe and cry with (or at) Gabbi Sinclair as she tries to pick up the pieces after a failed relationship. And though she doesn't realise it at first, the hang-ups it's left her with about women. She decides the best thing to do is attempt to claw back the lost years of her youth, where it was a decade ago, on a Greek island full of women. Easy enough, right? Join Gabbi on her adventures and the often awkward situations she finds herself in. She questions everything including her sanity in her quest to find normality in this life. She confides in two things: her best friend James and her diary. “It's what, gone 1pm and I've only just managed to escape. From where exactly? I'm not sure, some house somewhere several streets away in a maze... One minute I'm riding through town squeezed between two women on a motorbike, and the next I'm being served breakfast in bed, complete with flowers fresh from the garden on the tray, and kisses on the forehead like we were lovers on a Valentine’s getaway... “Shoot me.”

For Gustavo, it's in the arms of another man, while Hector finds peace and happiness with a bombshell stripper aptly named Star. As the story unfolds, Gustavo lets the reader into his life a little at a time. He guards his thoughts and holds dear to him those he knows love and will never judge him-his brother and his "sister" Angel-a transsexual with a heart big enough to save everyone but herself. This transformation story takes the reader on a trip throught the life of two Mexican-American men who never let go of their childhood dreams even as they live through horrific experiences complete with rape, domestic violence, drug abuse, abandonment, murder and betrayal. Just when it seems that the brothers will finally have their happy endings, tragedy rears its ugly head to again snatch away one brother's chance at true love. The hurt and shame could make many people fall and crumble, but it can also make life that much sweeter for those who champion the obstacles placed before them. From the hoods of gritty Sacramento, California to the slick Atlanta, Georgia streets, Gustavo and Hector stick together in hopes of finding the meaning behind the heartache.

Book excerpt: Talia You’d think being raised in a brothel would prepare me for anything. You’d be wrong. I never expected to find my mother murdered in cold blood. I never predicted I’d hunt down the killer and take his life in exchange. And I sure didn’t imagine the son of my mother’s murderer would turn out to be my mate. But I guess this is my life now. Being a werewolf in hiding was no piece of cake, but being a werewolf on the run is even worse… Alex I don’t think I made a very good first impression. But to be fair, who meets their mate at their father’s murder scene? A murder where she, evidently, is the number one and only suspect. It’s disturbing. It’s gruesome. But it’s fate. And I’ll do anything to see the mysterious woman with distinctive blue eyes again… ***Wolfblood (Book 2 of the Wolfbane series) introduces some new characters and continues Jasmine’s story from the first book. As such, it is highly recommended you read Wolfbane before starting Wolfblood, for context and to avoid spoilers.*** Content warning: This is a paranormal romance novel with dark themes containing mature adult content, offensive language, and graphic violence, and may not be suitable for young readers.

Book excerpt: Internationally popular food savant and blogger Simon Majumdar has an “irrepressible humor [that] sparkles through every bite” (Booklist) of this “ballsy, often hilarious foodie travelogue” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) that chronicles a yearlong journey around the world in search of everything delicious, odd, and oddly delicious. When Simon Majumdar hit forty, he realized there had to be more to life than his stable but uninspiring desk job. As he wondered how to escape his career, he rediscovered a list of goals he had scrawled out years before, the last of which said: Go everywhere, eat everything. With that, he had found his mission—a yearlong search for the delicious, and curious, and the curiously delicious, which he names Eat My Globe and memorably chronicles in these pages. In Majumdar's world, food is everything. Like every member of his family, he has a savant's memory for meals, with instant recall of dishes eaten decades before. Simon's unstoppable wit and passion for all things edible (especially those things that once had eyes, and a face, and a mom and a pop) makes this an armchair traveler's and foodie's delight—Majumdar does all the heavy lifting, eats the heavy foods (and suffers the weighty consequences), so you don't have to. He jets to thirty countries in just over twelve months, diving mouth-first into local cuisines and cultures as different as those of Japan and Iceland. His journey takes him from China, where he consumes one of his "Top Ten Worst Eats," stir-fried rat, to the United States, where he glories in our greatest sandwiches: the delectable treasures of Katz's Delicatessen in Manhattan, BBQ in Kansas and Texas, the still-rich po' boys of post-Katrina New Orleans. The meat of the story—besides the peerless ham in Spain, the celebrated steaks of Argentina, the best of Münich's wursts as well as their descendants, the famous hot dogs of Chicago—is the friends that Simon makes as he eats. They are as passionate about food as he is and are eager to welcome him to their homes and tables, share their choicest meals, and reveal their local secrets. Also a poignant memoir, Eat My Globe is a life told through food and spiced with Majumdar's remembrances of foods past, including those from his colorful childhood. A captivating look at one man's passion for food, family, and unique life experiences, Eat My Globe will make you laugh while it makes you hungry. It is sure to satiate any gastronome obsessed with globetrotting—for now.
