When Miguel spends the weekend with Beau and Lise, he finds himself interested against his wishes. He was engaged to be married before, and his bride, on the eve of their wedding, slept with the best man. Miguel will only consider brief flings now. Danielle loves him desperately, and when passion flares between them, she pretends she is protected against pregnancy. Danielle hopes to become pregnant by Miguel and after he breaks off the usually brief fling, she will have his child to love. But Miguel falls in love and proposes. Danielle tells him that she is pregnant and why. Miguel is incensed, and is only civil to her in public. Will Miguel come to realize that Danielle did not have to tell him the truth? That she told him because of her innate honesty? Will they reconcile?

Book excerpt: This book provides an accessible and up-to-date account of the rich military history of the nineteenth century. It takes a fresh approach, making novel links with conflict and coercion, and moving away from teleological emphases. Naval developments and warfare are included, as are social and cultural dimensions of military activity. Leading military historian Jeremy Black offers the reader a twenty-first century approach to this period, particularly through his focus on the dynamic drive provided by different forms of military goals, or "tasking". This allows echoes with modern warfare to come to the fore and provides a fuller understanding of a period sometimes considered solely as background to the total war of 1914-45. Alongside state-to-state warfare and the move toward "total war", Black's emphasis on different military goals gives due weight to trans-oceanic conflict at the expense of non-Europeans. Irregular, internal and asymmetric war are all considered, ranging from local insurgencies to imperial expeditions, and provide a deliberate shift from Western-centricity. At the very cutting edge of its field, this book is a must read for all students and scholars of military history and its related disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since trauma is a thoroughly relational phenomenon, it is highly unpredictable, and cannot be made to fit within the scientific framework Freud so admired. In Toward a Psychology of Uncertainty: Trauma-Centered Psychoanalysis, Doris Brothers urges a return to a trauma-centered psychoanalysis. Making use of relational systems theory, she shows that experiences of uncertainty are continually transformed by the regulatory processes of everyday life such as feeling, knowing, forming categories, making decisions, using language, creating narratives, sensing time, remembering, forgetting, and fantasizing. Insofar as trauma destroys the certainties that organize psychological life, it plunges our relational systems into chaos and sets the stage for the emergence of rigid, life-constricting relational patterns. These trauma-generated patterns, which often involve denial of sameness and difference, the creation of complexity-reducing dualities, and the transformation of certainty into certitude, figure prominently in virtually all of the complaints for which patients seek analytic treatment. Analysts, she claims, are no more strangers to trauma than are their patients. Using in-depth clinical illustrations, Dr. Brothers demonstrates how a mutual desire to heal and to be healed from trauma draws patients and analysts into their analytic relationships. She recommends the reconceptualization of what has heretofore been considered transference and countertransference in terms of the transformation of experienced uncertainty. In her view the increased ability of both analytic partners to live with uncertainty is the mark of a successful treatment. Dr. Brothers’ perspective sheds fresh light on a variety of topics of great general interest to analysts as well as many of their patients, such as gender, the acceptance of death, faith, cult-like training programs, and burnout. Her discussions of these topics are enlivened by references to contemporary cinema and theatre.

Book excerpt: David is a 13-year-old boy living with his family in a modest home in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná - Brazil. His father, a despicable alcoholic who finds pleasure in abusing his wife during his spare time, is found murdered one night outside a nightclub. After an investigation, the police conclude that all evidence points to a single suspect: the boy himself, David. The problem arises when David's mother is also murdered shortly afterward, and now both deaths are attributed to him. His father was worthless; but why would David kill his own mother? The explanation comes from a medical report that identifies David as having serious mental disorders. Consequently, David is locked away in a psychiatric hospital. However, it's precisely there that he suspects he's being ensnared in a terrifying plot, something that could alter his entire life course. But what secret could be behind the deaths of the boy's parents? Doubting his own sanity, David begins to investigate, but each discovery only raises more questions, and the young man is faced with a disturbing dilemma: to what extent can he believe in his own reality?
