Book excerpt: Migrants and minorities are always at risk of being caught in essentialized cultural definitions and being denied the right to express their cultural preferences because they are perceived as threats to social cohesion. Migrants and minorities respond to these difficulties in multiple ways — as active agents in the pedagogical, political, social, and scientific processes that position them in this or that cultural sphere. On the one hand, they reject ascribed cultural attributes while striving towards integration in a variety of social spheres, e.g. school and workplace, in order to achieve social mobility. On the other hand, they articulate demands for cultural self-determination. This discursive duality is met with suspicion by the majority culture. For societies with high levels of migration or with substantial minority cultures, questions related to the meaning of cultural heterogeneity and the social and cultural limits of learning and communication (e.g. migration education or critical multiculturalism) are very important. It is precisely here where the chances for new beginnings and new trials become of great importance for educational theorizing, which urgently needs to find answers to current questions about individual freedom, community/cultural affiliations, and social and democratic cohesion. Answers to these questions must account for both ‘political’ and ‘learning’ perspectives at the macro, mezzo, and micro contextual levels. The contributions of this edited volume enhance the knowledge in the field of migrant/minority education, with a special emphasis on the meaning of culture and social learning for educational processes.

Sie verfolgt das Ziel, die Forschungsarbeiten im Bereich der interkulturellen Pädagogik bezüglich des Schulerfolgs von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund zu durchleuchten und die Erklärungsfaktoren dessen aufzuzeigen. Um dem für die Schweiz typischen, föderalen Bildungssystem gerecht zu werden, sollen vor allem dort, wo es notwendig ist, Schweizer Studien im Vordergrund stehen. Je nach Themenfeld werden aber auch internationale Forschungsergebnisse dargelegt. Im Zentrum der Analyse sollen einerseits jene Faktoren stehen, auf welche die Lehrpersonen durch ihre Tätigkeit direkt Einfluss nehmen können. Andererseits finden auch die nicht-direkt beeinflussbaren Faktoren Einzug in die Studie, um den Lehrpersonen die ganze Palette an Fördermöglichkeiten – auch die ausserschulischen – aufzuzeigen und näher zu bringen. Schlussendlich erweitern auch diese Faktoren die interkulturelle Kompetenz der Lehrkräfte, welche für die Gestaltung von Unterricht in multikulturellen Klassen und die optimale, sprich gleichberechtigte Förderung von Kindern und Jugendlichen aus anderen Kultur- und Sprachkreisen unabdingbar ist. Da nach den neuesten Erkenntnissen aus der sozialpsychologischen und interkulturellen Forschung die Sprachförderung und insbesondere die Erstsprachförderung als wesentlicher Faktor des Schulerfolges von Kindern und Jugendlichen mit Migrationshintergrund herausgeht (vgl. Müller 1997, Schader / Haenni Hoti 2006, Caprez 2007), wird dieser in der Studie besondere Berücksichtigung finden. Die Literaturstudie möchte somit den von vielen Seiten so oft erwähnten Schwierigkeiten in multikulturellen Schulen und Problemen mit „Ausländerkindern“ eine breite Palette von Fördermöglichkeiten und in der Schweiz vorhandene, alternative Modelle gegenüber stellen. Book excerpt: The comparative investigation of the acquisition of gender in Spanish by early and late bilinguals of different language combinations is highly debated and crucial as the phenomenon of gender involves grammatical features that differ in all three languages under investigation. Against this background, both early and late bilinguals face an arduous learning task which differs in complexity. Couched within a generative framework, the empirical study focuses on 257 participants with different levels of proficiency in Spanish ranging from low to advanced, and through a series of tests aims to discover which extra-linguistic and intra-linguistic factors act as triggers for non-native outcomes in adult heritage speakers and L2 learners. The observed morphological variability is argued not to stem from a representational (i.e. syntactic) deficit, but rather from a mapping problem in L2 learners and heritage speakers. Successful attainment in terms of gender is possible but dependent on the interplay between various extralinguistic and linguistic factors.

Dazu nehme ich auf die neueste Literatur Bezug, versuche aber gleichzeitig die Debatte auch historisch einzuordnen. Nach einer historischen Vergewisserung im zweiten Kapitel, geht es im dritten Kapitel um die gängigen Erklärungsmodelle (Kulturkapitaltheorie; Bourdieu, Humankapitaltheorie; Gary S. Becker, primären und sekundären Herkunftseffekte/ Boudon, Theorie rationaler Bildungsentscheidungen; Erikson/Jonsson, Mikrotheoretischer Ansatz; Breen/Goldthorpe, Wert-Erwartungs-Theorie; Esser), die insbesondere „kapitaltheoretischen“ Annahmen machen, noch einmal durch und konfrontiere sie mit der von Gomolla und Radtke vorgelegten Theorie Institutioneller Diskriminierung. Den Höhepunkt der Arbeit stellt das vierte Kapitel dar, in dem ich in sehr filigraner und gut informierter Weise die Reichweite und die Grenze der verschiedenen Erklärungsmodelle gegeneinander abwäge und in einer sehr präzisen Art und Weise die jeweiligen Erklärungsdesiderate benenne. Im abschließenden fünften Kapitel versuche ich mit einem Theorieangebot von Nauck und Diefenbach der Diskussion eine weitere Wendung zu verleihen. Dabei geht es darum, aus den kapitaltheoretischen Ansätzen individuelle Strategien der Auseinandersetzung mit den vorgefundenen Gegebenheiten des Schulsystems abzuleiten, welche die Positionen der Migranten im Bildungssystem entscheidend mit bestimmen. Ich versuche mich in meinen Schlussüberlegungen mit einer Integration der verschiedenen Erklärungsansätze, die von hohem Problembewußtsein zeugt und mich als einen reflektierten Kenner der Debatte ausweist.
