Book excerpt: I use these data in two ways, first, to project the detailed social geography of immigrant and visible minority groups in the three largest metropolitan areas of the country and, second, to reflect upon the significance of the emerging patterns. [...] It ranges from 0 to 100 and indicates the proportion of a group that would have to relocate in order for that group to have the same residential distribution as the rest of the population. [...] This point is corroborated in the UN-CCSD study, which found that six of the Census Tracts with the highest proportions of the population experiencing low income were located in municipalities outside the old City of Toronto, and two of the top five were in Scarborough. [...] The first pair of maps shows the distribution of all immigrants across the metropolitan region, and the distribution of those experiencing low income. [...] By 2017, it appears that the most dense concentrations of immigrants will be in far-flung areas of the region, especially in the north-east (Figure 7), with the ratio of immigrants in a number of Census Tracts expected to exceed 75 percent.

While the full value of the survey will be reached when the three waves of data collection are completed, this first wave of data provides important benchmark information. The focus of this publication is on the early settlement experiences of immigrants, from pre-migration to the first six months after arrival. First an overview of the LSIC population is provided, looking at both pre-migration characteristics as well as those at arrival. This is followed by a comprehensive look at the first six months of the settlement process, looking at things such as health, housing and mobility; education and training taken since arrival; employment, income and the general perception of the immigrant's settlement experience. Finally, a more in-depth look at problems and difficulties newcomers experience in four key areas of integration is presented: accessing health services, finding housing, accessing education and training, and finding employment. Challenges to integration are examined in terms of what help was needed, received and from whom, or needed and not received.
