Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does poetry have to do with living your life better; understanding yourself more deeply; and enjoying your relationships more fully? This inviting volume is a rich and varied collection of poems, an anthology which gives meaning to the Why of poetry. Enriched with humor, storytelling, and historical bits, it will appeal not only to lovers of poetry, but to those who wish to give poetry a second chance, having perhaps been compelled by an English teacher to torture meaning out of a 'famous' poem. The poems gathered here - ancient to modern; a few lines to many; serious to funny - are organized around nine core personality types as described by the Enneagram, an ancient map of transformation melded with modern psychology. Whether your personality is naturally withdrawn, dutiful, or assertive you will find poems to remind you of your gifts, warn you of your greatest pitfalls, and inspire you to live your best self. Dr. Van Zino brings together her long experience of working with people as a family doctor, teacher and coach with her love of literature, helping others to explore the rich potential for healing and growth inherent in each of us.

Book excerpt: Now it is possible for the first time to trace in a systematic way the language patterns of one of the greatest poets who have written in English, W. B. Yeats. Like A Concordance to the Poems of Matthew Arnold, the first of the Cornell Concordances that are under the general editorship of Professor Parrish, this volume was produced on an IBM 704 electronic data-processing machine. Computer technique has so advanced that the Yeats concordance includes punctuation and gives cross references for the second parts of hyphenated words. The frequency of every word in Yeats's poems is given, and an appendix lists all indexed words in order of frequency. The body of this book consists of an index of all significant words in Yeats, each word listed in the line or lines in which it occurs. The concordance is based on the variorum text of Yeats, edited by Alspach and Allt, and includes all variants that occur in printed versions of Yeats's poems.

Book excerpt: At the conclusion of STEENIE OSHEA, her niece, Aine OShea Connolly demands her own story. The copper-haired, green-eyed seventeen year-old strolls down Galway Bay, rows the empty curagh out to the mysterious white traveling ship, climbs the rope ladder and peers into depictions of tableaus, each illustrating unforgettable, future scenes. Aine, now 22 in this sequel, follows these four tableau journeys to Belfast, Taos, Crete and Gelati, all lay lines on the planet. In this tale of magical realism, she discovers that five authors have written identical childrens books in Belfast; that a white dome, mountain city awaits victims of the archaics in Taos; that the archeological site of Knossos holds secrets in Crete; and that a strange design-pattern flows through the ancient, Gelati monastery/academy located near Tskhaltubo, Georgia, a former Soviet Republic. On the path, Aine meets a variety of people who gift her with indispensable experiences that lead to her own transformations. On this historic, travel journey, she climbs mountains, explores underground sites and sails the Aegean Sea before returning to her home in Galway, five years hence.

Book excerpt: This authoritative edition was first published in the acclaimed Oxford Authors series under the general editorship of Frank Kermode. It brings together a unique combination of Yeats's poetry and prose - all the major poems, complemented by plays, critical writings, and letters - to give theessence of his work and thinking.W. B. Yeats was born in 1865, only 38 years after the death of William Blake, and died in 1939, the contemporary of Ezra Pound and James Joyce. His career crossed two centuries, and this volume represents the full range of his achievement, from the Romantic early poems of Crossways and thesymbolist masterpiece The Wind Among the Reeds to his last poems. Myth and folk-tale influence both his poems and his plays, represented here by Cathleen ni Houlihan and Deirdre among others. The importance of the spirit world to his life and work is evident in his critical essays and occultwritings, and the anthology also contains political speeches, autobiographical writings, and a selection of his letters. This one-volume collection of poems and prose offers a unique perspective on the connectedness of Yeats's literary output, showing how his aesthetic, spiritual, and political development was reflected in everything he wrote.

Book excerpt: 'A remarkable book . . . It's a powerful testament to the healing balm of gardening and the resilience of the human spirit in the direst of circumstances.' Financial Times 'Not a happy book and yet it's magically heartening. It makes a gardener question his or her values.' The Times 'This extraordinary book...warm and engaging...like a photograph magicked to life.' Spectator 'Snow has spent ten years as a photographer and filmmaker covering unrest . . . Throughout that time she has sought comfort in green oases and come to understand "how vital gardens are 'against a horrid wilderness' of war". . . There can be few counter-narratives as enchanting and sad as those Snow recounts in War Gardens.' Times Literary Supplement 'For all these victims of war, their gardens are places in which to breathe, providing moments of calm, hope and optimism in a fragile life of horror and uncertainty. For many, it helps them to grieve. Books seldom bring a lump to my throat, but this one did.' Spectator 'What makes War Gardens the most illuminating garden book to be published this year, is the realisation that people's gardens are the antidotes to the horrors of their surroundings.' Country Life A journey through the most unlikely of gardens: the oases of peace people create in the midst of war In this millennium, we have become war weary. From Afghanistan to Iraq, from Ukraine to South Sudan and Syria, from Kashmir to the West Bank, conflict is as contagious and poisonous as Japanese knotweed. Living through it are people just like us with ordinary jobs, ordinary pressures and ordinary lives. Against a new landscape of horror and violence it is up to them to maintain a modicum of normality and colour. For some, gardening is the way to achieve this. Working in the world's most dangerous war zones, freelance war correspondent and photographer Lally Snow has often chanced across a very moving sight, a testimony to the triumph of the human spirit in adversity, a celebration of hope and beauty: a war garden. In Kabul, the royal gardens are tended by a centenarian gardener, though the king is long gone; in Camp Bastion, bored soldiers improvise tiny gardens to give themselves a moment's peace; on both sides of the dividing line in Jerusalem families tend groves of olives and raise beautiful plants from the unforgiving, disputed landscape; in Ukraine, families tend their gardens in the middle of a surreal, frozen war. War Gardens is a surprising, tragic and beautiful journey through the darkest places of the modern world, revealing the ways people make time and space for themselves and for nature even in the middle of destruction. Illustrated with Lally Snow's own award-winning photography, this is a book to treasure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ellmann's sensitivity to what it meant to be an artist shaped his work from the outset: "The life of an artist ... differs from the lives of other persons in that its events are becoming artistic sources even as they command his present attention. Instead of allowing each day, pushed back by the next, to lapse into imprecise memory, he shapes again the experiences which have shaped him." Richard Ellmann died in 1987. His life and work have touched the lives of many. Some of the essays in this collection commemorate Richard Ellmann and his committment to Twentieth Century literature: most provide a continuing investigation of the Twentieth Century literature to which he devoted his carrer.
