Whoever possesses the Gate will wield enormous power, travelling between universes at the speed of light and wreaking havoc across galaxies. Unbeknownst to them, they have an unlikely ally: a vengeful entity who is able to clone any person or object with a single touch--and mete out death just as swift . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion in Science Fiction investigates the history of the representations of religion in science fiction literature. Space travel, futuristic societies, and non-human cultures are traditional themes in science fiction. Speculating on the societal impacts of as-yet-undiscovered technologies is, after all, one of the distinguishing characteristics of science fiction literature. A more surprising theme may be a parallel exploration of religion: its institutional nature, social functions, and the tensions between religious and scientific worldviews. Steven Hrotic investigates the representations of religion in 19th century proto-science fiction, and genre science fiction from the 1920s through the end of the century. Taken together, he argues that these stories tell an overarching story-a 'metanarrative'-of an evolving respect for religion, paralleling a decline in the belief that science will lead us to an ideal (and religion-free) future. Science fiction's metanarrative represents more than simply a shift in popular perceptions of religion: it also serves as a model for cognitive anthropology, providing new insights into how groups and identities form in a globalized world, and into how crucial a role narratives may play. Ironically, this same perspective suggests that science fiction, as it was in the 20th century, may no longer exist.

This book was released on 2024-09-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Holocaust, American literature experienced a resurgence of Jewish themes, characters, and contributions. This book focuses on the genres of science fiction and fantasy of the post-Holocaust period and argues that while the era was colored by grief, it also offered a renaissance of Jewish creative expression. The author provides an overview of texts beginning with the rise of Jewish speculative fiction anthologies in science fiction and fantasy and delving into emerging subgenres such as alternate history, post-apocalyptic, cold war, second-wave feminism, counterculture parodies, new wave, postmodernism, and cyberpunk to illustrate how Jewish culture made its mark on popular culture. The book also covers the Silver Age and Bronze Age of comics which saw Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Julius Schwartz, and Marv Wolfman form new superhero teams to battle prejudice and draws parallels with some of the most impactful shows made by Jewish creators, including Star Trek, Twilight Zone, and Doctor Who. The analysis also looks beyond the American context to include texts from Germany, the Soviet Union, Brazil, and Israel.

Book excerpt: GO ASK ALICE Time after time, life after life, Cory Maddox was being incarnated into worlds he found both familiar and strangely different. And it was only in his latest incarnation that, for the first time, Cory brought along knowledge, skills, and memories of his previous existence--memories of cold betrayal, memories that told him that nothing he saw, nothing he felt, could be trusted. Nor could he trust his companions; others who, like himself, kept moving from life to life, intent on gathering enough power to escape the endless cycle. But it was only with the help of those companions that Cory could develop the technological means to peer beyond the veil of reality--to the system that controlled all existence, where perhaps he could glimpse the shadowy figures whom he was sure were manipulating reality...if what he was experiencing actually was reality. Time was running out. His memories gave him an advantage over the others, but he would have to act quickly and surely if he were to discover the truth--before truth itself could no longer be trusted...
